					 Some Basic Visual Elements
 Other elements are: dot, line, saturation (amount of grey in an object), value (lightness or darkness)

                            may be outlines of objects         composed from parts of adjacent objects    gaps
 Shape
                            we usually grasp basic forms: circle, square, oval, triangle… without difficulty

                            square: honest, straight forward…              curves: calm, relaxed…
                            triangle: action, tension, aspiration…
                            different shapes tell different stories eg a cathedral
                            often speak of warm and cool
 Hue (Colour)
                            adds dimension to images that were black and white
                            can direct viewer attention
                            create moods or feelings


 Scale                      shows relations between objects (characters and relations between them) - the
                            manipulation of scale can give new meaning/life

                            used to produce illusion of depth

                            emotional - in films can manipulate our feelings

                            when we look at an image our eye travels around the frame looking at the contents
 Direction
                            direction may be vertical, diagonal or curved (each may produce different emotions)




                            two dimensional representations can imply three-dimensional reality
 Dimension
                            linear perspective

                            light and shadow

                            eye level
                            motion in visual images is an illusion
 Motion
                            static images can suggest motion: blur, use of line, balance of a figure




                            may be touch, but also may be “felt” with our eyes
 Texture
                            tactile “feels’ like…
                            optical “looks” like…
