This exercise is designed to help you discover what work/environment factors contribute to a satisfying career for you, and what factors are relatively unimportant. Following is a list of qualities people value in their work. Review the definitions and rate the degree of importance (from 1 to 5) you would place on each. 1-----------------2-----------------3-----------------4-----------------5 not at all important very important ___1__ Supervision. Be directly responsible for the work of others. ___4__ Precision Work. Work in situations where there is very little tolerance for error. __1___ Adventure. Be relatively assured of keeping the job with a reasonable financial reward. ___4__ Public Contact. Have a lot of day-to-day contact with people. __1___ Variety. Have work responsibilities that frequently change in their content or setting. __1___ Help Others. Be involved in helping other people in a direct way. ___4__ Recognition/Social Status. Be looked up to by others in the organization and in the community. Receive public recognition for work done. __4___ Competition. Engage in work where I use my abilities to compete against others in clear win-or-lose situations. __3___ Responsibility. Have the power to decide courses of action, policies, etc. Be responsible for making decisions on my own. __3___ Work Alone. Do the majority of work by myself, without any significant amount of contact with others. ___2__ Work with Others. Have close working relationships with my co-workers; work as a team toward common goals. __3___ Influence People. Be in a position to change the attitudes and opinions of others. __4___ Knowledge. Engage, as part of my job responsibilities, in the pursuit of knowledge, truth or understanding.
