FIRST AID/ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION
POLICY AND PROCEDURES

FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
Medical information on students is collected at time of enrolment and parents are
reminded at the commencement of each school term to update information as necessary
Class teachers are provided with medical information relating to the children in their class
Medical information is kept in the Medical Room at Reception Children with life-
threatening conditions are placed on “Medical Alert” and photo and doctor approved
action plan is displayed in the staffroom and is provided to the class teacher
Emergency Action Plans are followed for children on Medical Alert
A summary of Medical Alert children and action is included in the “Relief Teacher
Information File”
As an “Asthma Friendly School”, the recommended Asthma First Aid procedures are
followed
The school ensures that a number of Staff are trained as First Aiders (Senior First Aid
Certificate)
The school nurse provides regular staff information and training on the provision of First
Aid in schools
Each class has a kit of Basic First Aid supplies for minor incidents
Staff are to consult a First Aider if there is any doubt or concern regarding the injury
Parents must be informed if a child has any sort of head injury, no matter how minor, so
that they are able to observe for concussion which can occur later as a result of a head
injury (ie. call parent or put note in diary)
For all but minor incidents, parents or emergency contacts are informed so that they may
make a decision regarding further action/treatment
Serious incidents are recorded in the CCI Insurance Report Book
The school follows the CEO “Administration of Medication and Provision of Health Care
to Students” Guidelines (CEO Policy File 5-G1)
