 There are three answers...
 #1: It is a Platform
 ●   For building rich client applications that will run on
     any operating system that supports a standard JVM.
 ●   Provides a rich framework of windows, menus, tool
     bars, actions, etc.
 ●   Used for building a wide variety of applications

●   For Java developers (but more languages are being
    added...)
●   Free, open-source - http://www.netbeans.org
●   100% pure Java – runs on any platform that has a JDK
    1.4.2 or higher.
●   Foundation for two other Sun IDEs:
    –   Sun Java Studio Enterprise
    –   Sun Java Studio Creator
