Storage Area Network (SAN)
Request for Proposal

December 14, 2010 presentation to Board of Education

                                                         1
A Storage Area Network will…
 Effectively centralize and securely store
    critical data assets.

 Provide an efficient way to backup data.

 Provide a pathway to future technology
    improvements including virtualization,
    disaster recovery, and increased energy
    savings.
                                                2
A Storage Area Network is…
 High-performance disk storage accessible
    to multiple servers using specialized
software to maintain and backup the
storage. The SAN appears attached to all
the servers. A SAN has its own network
of storage devices apart from the regular
network. The cost and complexity of
SANs dropped in the late 2000s, allowing
    wider adoption. (cit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_area_network)

                                                                               3
The trouble with Servers at
School…
 Data spread among more than 50
    servers across the district.
 Environmental risks include inadequate
    power, unsanitary conditions,
overheating, risk of fire, old equipment,
    and lack of physical security.
 Most servers are more than 5 years old.

                                                4
The trouble with data on servers…
 Data isolated across many servers can’t
readily be backed up in a unified way.
 Ever more servers with more storage
  create a backup bottleneck—backup
needs exceed the time and hardware
  available to backup
 There are many kinds of servers and
  their backup requirements differ.

                                            5
Proposed solution…
 Provision two data centers to host a
  replicated SAN. (done)
 Centralize servers. (in process)
 Deploy server virtualization. (in process)
 Implement a SAN including unified and
replicated storage hardware, copies of the
data in two locations, and multiple
  backups of the data.

Dell Equallogic SAN

Model PS6500E. (Contains 48 1 terabyte disk drives.)

Specialized hardware and software to operate and backup
critical data systems including Zangle (15,000+ accounts,)
email (1,750+ accounts,) Library (18,000+ patrons,)
SuccessMaker (2,500+ accounts,) SRI (2,500 accounts) and
access to personal files (19,000+ users of 4,500 PCs, 500
laptops, and 750 thin client computers.)
                                                             7
Dell Equallogic SAN

 Dell is Profitable and publicly-owned.
 References include Patagonia, other
  Districts, and County Offices.
 Support from Dell and from vendor.
 The SAN can be expanded.

PRIMARY SAN
                             REPLICA SAN

The Primary SAN holds the ‘working copy’ of our
data and ‘snapshot’ backups of our data. The
Replica SAN holds a ‘mirror copy’ of our data and
‘snapshot’ point in time backups of our data.

PRIMARY SAN
Advantages of redundant ESC data centers
                    •Separate locations linked by fiber.
                    •Separate backup generators.
                    •Separate uninterruptible power supplies.
                    •Separate air cooling.
                    •Separate fire sprinkler systems.
•Fire suppression and raised floor (in primary data center.)

The replica SAN can take over
from the primary SAN and can be 1st floor
used to restore the primary SAN. Data Center

Server virtualization
 Server virtualization transforms a single
physical server to appear to the network
  as multiple servers.
 Significant efficiencies can be attained
  through server virtualization.
 VUSD has 10 ‘physical’ servers hosting 30
‘virtual’ servers in the Education Service
  Center’s data centers.
