Tips for successful job hunting
Different sources of job vacancies
As well as looking for jobs in the paper, online and in job centres explore other less obvious avenues. These include: going to industry events, using your contacts (friends, family, previous employers, colleagues etc) and using social networking sites on the internet.
Speculative applications
If no vacancies are advertised in your chosen field, try making speculative applications. Be selective and contact employers you are really interested in working for. Find out who does the recruiting and contact them before and after you send in your details.
Go for it!
Don’t be put off from making an application even if you don’t fulfil all the criteria of the job description. Remember that the employer is painting a picture of an ideal candidate. Think carefully about how you can demonstrate the skills required from your own work and personal experience.
Be flexible
Even if you would prefer full time, permanent work, also consider part time, temporary and voluntary work as they can sometimes lead to permanent employment. It will also give you up to date experience to put on your CV.
Take time
Take time to make a high standard application, getting help from experts if needed. Give attention to your covering letter. Remember to highlight how you can contribute to the success of the organisation you are applying for.
Stay positive and optimistic
Don’t let rejections get you down. Research shows that keeping a positive attitude is more likely to bring success. Job hunting can take a lot of time and effort but take a break now and then and make time for things you enjoy.
