					Digestive System Organs
                     Mouth

 Tears, softens &
  breaks down food
 Mechanical &
  chemical digestion
 Digests carbohydrates
 Enzyme is amylase
 Saliva contains
  amylase
 Spends seconds in
  mouth
Epiglottis

       Seals off
        windpipe when
        swallowing
                 Esophagus

 Connects mouth to
  stomach
 Important Thing to
  Know: Peristalsis –
  involuntary smooth
  muscle
  contractions
 Food spends 10
  seconds here
Stomach

     Smooth muscle pouch
     Mostly mechanical
        digestion
     Digests proteins
     Enzyme is pepsin
     Important: Hydrochloric
        acid kills bacteria; thick
        mucus protects;
        peristalsis
     Food spends 2-4 hours
        here
                         Small Intestine

 Almost all chemical
    digestion and nutrient
    absorption occurs here
 Mostly chemical digestion
 Digests fats & last bit of
    carbs, protein
 Enzymes from
    liver/pancreas
 Villi – finger like structures
    that increase surface area
    for absorption; peristalsis
 Food is here for 3-5 hours
Small Intestine’s Villi
Liver

     Produces bile
     Chemical digestion
     Digests fat
     Important: Sends
        bile to the
        gallbladder. Does
        NOT actually touch
        the food
                Gallbladder

 Stores bile
 Chemical digestion
 Digests fat
 Important: Sends
 bile to small
 intestine. Does
 NOT actually touch
 the food.
Pancreas

      Produces enzymes to
         break down proteins,
         fats, carbs in small
         intestine
      Chemical digestion
      Digests proteins, fats,
         carbs
      Uses various enzymes
      Important: Empties
         enzymes into small
         intestine. Does NOT
         actually touch the food.
               Large Intestine

 Removes water
  from food
 Nutrient “digested”
  is water
 Important: Bacteria
  living here make
  vitamins
 Food is here for 18-
  24 hours
Rectum

     End of large
     intestine –
     solid waste
     takes form here
              Anus

 Muscular
 opening of
 rectum
Diseases & Injuries of the
    Digestive System
Oral Cancer
Fish Bone in Larynx
Esophageal Cancer
Stomach Ulcers
Appendicitis
Colon/Rectal Cancer
Pancreatic Cancer
