Hello Prospective Prior Learning Assessment Student, Thanks for your inquiry into the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). Information about the portfolio-assisted PLA process is included in this email. In addition to alternate credit options like PLA, EMU also offers classes in compressed formats to assist you in earning your degree more rapidly. Please visit www.ep.emich.edu for classes offered in one-week formats, on weekends, or online. Classes also are offered on the main campus in Ypsilanti as well as at regional sites including Brighton, Detroit, Flint, Jackson, Livonia, Monroe, Traverse City and Washtenaw County. EMU offers portfolio-assisted PLA to enable students to earn credit for learning gained outside the classroom. Twenty of the University’s schools and departments participate in the PLA process. Departments may limit participation to specific programs or to specific courses within programs. Students register for a free three-hour workshop: Portfolio Preparation and Presentation. At the free workshop other alternative credit options are reviewed such as the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and credit by examination. Online Workshop Following successful completion the workshop, students have one year to compile a portfolio for each course for which credit is sought. Students register portfolios for assessment by faculty. The assessment fee is $125 (subject to change) per portfolio. A maximum of thirty semester credits may be earned via all alternative credit options including PLA. Please call if you have additional questions or wish to discuss the PLA option.
