A Showcase to Remember
The glow of autumn hues throughout the room were only surpassed by the warmth in our hearts as we
feasted on a lavish luncheon and listened to the powerful memoir of Henry D. Schuster, so descrip-
tively expressed by our own Caroline Orzes. This year, Showcase was perfect, not only because we
were thrilled with the announcement of events, study groups and initiatives we will produce this year
but because we showcased one of our own members, Caroline Orzes, who has recently co-written and
published, along with Henry D. Schuster, a most profound life journey. The book, an autobiography,
―Abraham’s Son – The Making of an American,‖ is an account of Henry’s early life in Germany and
his coming of age in America.
From the moment we entered Spiedini Ristorante, we knew we were in for a very special afternoon.
The beautiful decorations and deliciously prepared menu set the tone. First on our program, Elliot
Karp, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas and a Brandeis graduate, spoke pas-
sionately about the university, renewing our sense of purpose and devotion.
But it was Caroline Orzes’ descriptions that so vividly captured Schuster’s horror and hope and trium-
phant passage through the Holocaust and journey in America that we will most treasure and remember.
Caroline provided a perfect balance of historical context and personal anecdotes, and it was Henry,
himself, who so intimately and eloquently responded to our inquiries and requests for more detail. His
recollections enhanced the perspective of the time.
There are many people to thank for the Showcase success. Thank you to the outstanding Showcase
committee: Arlene Zonder, Elaine Sobel, Carol Seskin, Dorothy Pansek, Caroline Orzes, Margret Ofek,
Denise Needleman, Margie Karp, Mimi Katz, Gale Labovitz, Judy Jacobson, Florence Frost, Debra
Feldman, Edith Einhorn and Marsha Cohen. Thank you also to Marilyn Shocket for her able assistance
with reservations.
Gratitude is also extended to the following people who contributed to the auction: Arlene Zonder,
Laura West, Carol Seskin and her daughter Ellen, Denise Needleman, Gale Labovitz, Caryn Kopf,
Florence Frost and Edith Einhorn. Also, a special thank you to Adrianne Rubin, Carol Seskin and De-
nise Needleman for their help with administering the auction.
Many congratulations and thanks goes to Gay Lynne Kegan and Gloria Kopf for co-chairing the event
– for their imagination, creativity, outstanding organizational ability and for their spirit in encouraging
the committee to do their best.
Most of all, thank you to all who attended Showcase, because with your support, we are on our way to
fund our very first Las Vegas Chapter-endowed Scholarship fund. We need to raise $50,000 and with
your help, we will reach our goal..
We hope to see you all at our next event.
