                        Indicators

                        “Northeast Regional Profile”
The Northeast Region of Florida consists of 20 counties which vary greatly in size and population:
Madison, Taylor, Hamilton, Suwannee, Lafayette, Dixie, Columbia, Union, Gilchrist, Levy, Alachua,
Bradford, Baker, Nassau, Duval, Clay, Putman, St Johns, Flagler and Volusia. In 2008, the population
among these respective regions was estimated to be 2,415,572. By 2015, population estimates within
the Northeast Region are predicted to be 2,624,145 (Florida Department of Health, 2009).


This regional profile is intended to serve as a resource for providers, coalitions, and circuit/region staff.
Specifically, it highlights regional alcohol and drug indicators which can assist in the selection and
implementation of evidence-based programs, practices and strategies.

Northeast Region


The Northeast Region is host to twelve (12) anti-drug coalitions whose primary goal is to ensure that
their communities are safe, healthy and drug-free. These coalitions have been trained in the Substance
Abuse Response Approach (SARA) and as a result have produced needs assessments, resource
assessments and community action plans addressing underage drinking.

  Economic Costs of Underage Drinking in Florida, 2009

Underage drinking is a persistent public health problem that generates significant costs to society from
alcohol-related consequences such as criminal activity/delinquency, antisocial behavior, academic
difficulties, risky sexual behavior, health problems, unintentional injuries, and traffic crashes. The total
estimated cost of underage drinking in the state of Florida in 2007 was $3.073 billion. This state-wide
total translates into a cost of $165 per Florida resident, $627 per youth under the age of 21, and
$1,818 per youth 14-20 years of age. Within the Northeast Region the estimated costs of underage
drinking in 2007 was $458 million, which translates to $181 per resident, $664 per youth under the age
of 21 and $1,820 per youth 14-20 years of age.
