                                 Reactions
•Condensation Reaction (removal of water)
•Occurs between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol
•Creates an organic salt known as an ester, plus a water molecule

•Naming:
1. Locate alcohol, bonded to the single O and name (methyl, ethyl...)
2. Locate parent acid, including the double bonded C=O (methan, ethan...)
3. Replace “-ic acid” ending for acid with “-oate”

•General equation:




 •Carboxylic acid contributes OH- ion

 •Alcohol contributes H+ ion

 •Sulfuric acid acts as catalyst, also requires heat
Sulfuric Acid
 Donates protons to surrounding solution → increases
 acidity

 Dehydrating agent → captures produced water → bigger
 yield

 Cheap and simple
                 The Uses of Esters
• Esters are often used as:

•   Softeners in moulding and plastic industries

•   Industrial solvents for making fats, paints and varnishes

• Artificial fragrances or scents

•    Making artificial food flavours that are added into food such
    as ice cream and sweets.
         Environmental Impact
• Diisononyl phthalate – used to make hard
  plastics toys soft and flexible.

• Pure rapeseed oil ethyl ester – used in fuels
            Summary of Reactions
• Two types of reactions: esterfication and hydrolysis
• Esterfication:
       carboxylic acid + alcohol -H2SO4(aq)--> ester + water
• Hydrolysis:
       water + ester -> carboxylic acid + alcohol




• Example of ethyl - ethanoate
                    Helpful Hints
• Naming : 1. Take prefix of alcohol and add “yl”
            2. Drop “oic acid” and replace with “oate”
            3. Combine
• Condensed Structural Diagrams:
      1. Look for “COO”
     2. “C” side = carboxylic acid
              *Include that “C” when counting
      3. “O” side = alcohol
