Chinese Chess: The Chinese Chess Club is an introduction and tutorial class for the ancient game of Chinese chess called Xiang-Qi in Mandarin Chinese. It is intended for students familiar with chess who wish to explore a fascinating game, and also for those students who have never played before. Let us join this Club and discover this Chess game and learn the strategy as we improve our game skills. This class is suitable for students 8 years old and above. Embroidery: The embroidery class introduces the students to a wide variety of needle work projects, including traditional Chinese embroidery, cross-stitch, sequin & bead decorations, plastic canvas basket, etc. This class is suitable for students 8 years of age and older. Arts and Craft: This class provides the opportunity for students to explore different kinds of arts and crafts. They will learn scissor techniques and color mixing using different media. Students must be 6 years old and up. Any exceptions have to be approved by the instructor. We will be doing arts and crafts associated with different festivals. Lanterns for Mid-Autumn Festival, bunnies and Easter eggs for Easter are examples of our crafts. The classes will be taught in both Chinese and English. The kids will learn the basic Chinese representative of the individual theme of the class. Arts and Crafts are a fundamental part of the pre-school and kindergarten Show & Tell: The Show & Tell class is for students between 4 - 6 years of age. The objective is to motivate students in Chinese listening and speaking skills via Chinese stories, songs and activities in their young age. Teaching materials are beyond Kindergarten school curriculum. Modern Cartooning *: Learn how to draw your favorite cartoon characters as well as art from different cultures. Learn techniques in color pencil and acrylic paint and marker rendering. You will be amazed at how well you can draw with Miss Jeri's simple instruction. An interest in art is all that is needed. This Class is suitable for students 6 years old and up. * A minimum of 10 students is required for this class to open. Primary Chinese Painting: Students will learn how to use the Chinese brush, the ink, and how to apply the colors. They will first use pencils to trace out rough drafts, and then use the “double-hook” method to tint the painting, or the “impression” method to paint with water ink. The subjects of paintings include flowers, plants, fruits and sceneries. The traditional Chinese painting must first go through the stages of tracing and imitating, to achieve the resemblance of its shape and spirit. The next stage is to do the sketching and creation, through the brushing technique and ink application, to exhibit the Chinese Folk Dance: The Chinese Folk Dance class includes basic dance techniques and repertory. The students will learn a new dance routine and will perform at the end of the semester either at the Chinese New Year Celebration or at the School Commencement Ceremony. Specific cultural characteristics of the dance origination will be introduced to the students through dance movements and music. Students are also trained on how to work with each other as a team both in class and on stage. All students are required to ** curriculum. Students will learn how to play and make a Shuttlecock, and also make a kite. An introduction to how to use a Chinese Abacus, and simple calligraphy will be covered. The students will also learn the importance of Holidays and Festivals such as: Chinese New Year, Mid Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and others. We will also cover folk songs as well as some Fun Learning Through Games; This class is specially created to suit our younger students. We will focus on using games to develop and increase their Cantonese listening and speaking skills. We will be using a variety of games such as word puzzles, word pairings, memory games, spot the character, and nursery rhymes. This class is suitable for students between 4 - 6 years of age. Chinese Calligraphy: Calligraphy is considered an illustration of art and self-expression in Chinese Culture. It dates back thousands of years and to this day, it is still widely practiced throughout China. We will be using simple tools like a brush, ink and paper to write poems, short scrolls, characters, and word pairings. Students will learn to correctly hold and use a brush to write. They will also learn how to transform everyday Chinese characters into beautiful works of art with style, balance, and beauty. This class is suitable for students 8 years old and above and adults. Origami: The class focuses on simple beginner's paper folding. The class is progressive; therefore, each item and step learned will eventually lead into intermediate level and advanced level projects. The students learn to fold a new figure every week. During the second half of the cultural class, the students are asked to make projects that were made in the weeks past to see if they can remember how to fold it again. Examples of some projects that the students have learned are: the heart, crane, star box, and Soccer Team: The objective of this class is to introduce the sport of soccer to the students in a fun and non-competitive environment. Each class will teach and develop soccer skills and fundamental soccer techniques with emphasis on ball handling, passing, shooting, team play, and soccer related fitness. In addition, the class will develop each student’s attitude and enjoyment towards the game of soccer, and how to communicate with other students in Adult Tai Chi Class: Tai Chi Quan is predicated on the idea that mind, body and emotion are not separable. The exercise is designed to facilitate physical, mental and emotional development. It is performed in a slow, smooth and continuous manner, which relaxes the body and promotes the circulation of the blood; it strengthens muscles and lubricates joints; it develops concentration and stimulates awareness; it invigorates the heart and lungs and enables one to relieve fatigue, tension and stress. There are two Tai Chi classes offered in CHS – Chen style and Yang style. Chen style class mainly teaches: Chen new form fist set and second set, Chen competition form, Chen sword 57 forms and Tai Chi Fan. Yang etiquette. This class is suitable for children 7 years old and older. the rather complex camera. The Class is suitable for students 7 years old and up. the field. This class is suitable for students of grade two and above. Adult Mandarin Conversation: This course is for people who are interested in Mandarin. The emphasis will be on phonetic studying, daily usage, reading, oral practice, and listening comprehension. Lion Dance: The Lion Dance is an essential part of the Chinese New Year celebration in China and all around the world. In this class, the students will learn how to play the drum and handle the Lion head. The students will also learn the movements and the necessary choreography to perform at the Chinese New Year Celebration. In addition, some of the historical background and symbolism of the Lion Dance will be discussed. This class is suitable for students 7 years old and above. Chinese Yo-Yo: The Chinese Yo-yo class will allow the students to learn how to spin the yo-yo and learn new tricks to perform at the end of the semester. The students will be taught increasingly challenging tricks with their yoyos and will be required to practice at home to master their tricks. Yo-yos will be needed every class and if your child needs a yo-yo, please ask the teacher about where to buy one. This class is suitable for students 7 years old and above Creative Story Writing: This class will focus on the students’ creative power to write, edit, and translate their own short stories. In addition to the writing, translating, and editing portion, they will also illustrate their stories using the media of their choice. Initially, the students will write and edit their story in English. Then, they will translate their story into Chinese. Once the story is edited in both languages, they will illustrate their story. To finish their project, they will put the bilingual writing and the illustrations together to form a booklet. Samples of some stories might be published in the school journal. This class is suitable for students 9 years old and above. Juggling: The juggling class is for students who are looking for fun and a challenge. Students will be taught the fundamentals of juggling and will need to practice at home to get better. As they progress in their learning, they will be taught new tricks that are fun to watch and will be sure to impress their audience! Juggling is an interesting talent that can be learned and is always a show that is looked forward to at the end of the school year. Students will learn to juggle beanbags to rings and pins as they get better, and also at their request plate spinning and other fun things. Beanbags and other equipment is available upon request, see the instructor for details. This class is Suitable for students 7 years old and above. Adult Cantonese Conversation Group: This conversation group will be conducted in an open format and will be moderated by different people. The main goal is to provide an opportunity to have a Cantonese Only conversation group for adults who might not have exposure to Cantonese Conversation on a daily basis. The focus of this group is to get people familiar with Cantonese jargon, pronunciation and idioms. This group provides a friendly environment where participants can feel comfortable talking and discussing a particular subject in Cantonese. Topics of conversations might range from kids, weather, cooking, health, Cantonese idioms, Chinese Culture, food and maybe even philosophy.
