                                                                 20th April 3-4pm- Teleconference with Dr Jacqueline Allen MBChB, FRACS
                                                                  (ORL Consultant, North Shore Hospital, Senior Lecturer/ Researcher, The
                                                                  University of Auckland) and Anna Miles (Senior Tutor, Speech Science, The
                                                                  University of Auckland) exploring the role of the SLT in oesophageal dysphagia

                                                           Questions for discussion:

                                                           1. What is the role of the speech-language therapist in oesophageal dysphagia?
                                                           2. Do you screen for oesophageal impairments in your VFSS? Does your Radiologist
                                                           screen for oesophageal dysphagia?
                                                           3. Are there any barriers to you performing an oesophageal screening during your VFSS?
                                                           4. What does normal oesophageal transit look like in the young and old?
                                                           5. Do you know the symptoms of oesophageal dysphagia vs. oropharyngeal?
                                                           6. When and how do you do an oesophageal screen? When & who do you show it to?
                                                           7. Who do you refer to if you don’t think it looks right?

                                                           At the conclusion of the programme, participants will be able:

                                                           i. To define the role of the SLT in recognizing oesophageal dysphagia during a VFSS

                                                           ii. To describe the importance of oesophageal screening within a VFSS and be able to
                                                           discuss an appropriate protocol.

                                                           iii. To identify common oesophageal abnormalities during a VFSS
