• Usage statistics varied
and analysis
• Counter compliant statistics
Vendors/Publishers
• Vendors not always cutting the best deal to
the consortiums
– More generous discounts to consortiums can be
passed on to libraries and allows consortiums to
meet their maintenance and service costs
• This can be a win-win for all
– Libraries order more through the consortium;
larger orders to vendors and publishers helps
companies grow stronger and may allow more
flexibility in pricing.
Bundling
• Popular with publishers -but not always with
libraries
• End up buying packages that include
irrelevant titles
• Buying separate titles can be more expensive
• Let libraries pay one price, but customize the
list to match their program needs
Services
• ERMS (Electronic Resource Management
Services)
• Behind the scenes services are expensive, but
can drive content to the users more effectively
and efficiently
Assessment and Analysis
• Use Counter compliant statistics for all
resources; comparing “apples to apples”
• Use surveys/assessments to get feedback from
faculty and departments
– Use this data to drive renewal/cancellation
decisions

Collaborative Resource Distribution
Floristic Digital Library
(FDL) Initiative.
Projects such as the
Flora of North
America (FNA) and
Flora of China (FOC),
sponsored by the
National Science
Foundation, are
participating in the
FDL. The FNA project
alone involves more
than 800 scientists
working in areas such
as the US, Canada and
Greenland [Schnase et al.
1997].

Final thoughts
• Libraries are facing economic uncertainties, making it
difficult to plan future budgets.
• It is imperative to track costs and create projections in
order to provide better assessment and analysis of
resources
• Tracking data usage through user authenticated
“strings” helps keep purchases relevant to user needs
• As users become increasingly more “web social”
content will need to reflect this, making access and
retrieval easy, fast, efficient, and well-organized.
