Here are some useful statistical data relevant to our industry for your information. The following charts reflect the total retail
sales (in dollar figures), employment situation and number of establishments in the local retail industry. We hope that such data
will provide you with a useful reference tool while monitoring trends within the retail industry.


The value of total retail sales in March 2010, provisionally estimated at $24.7 billion, increased by
19.0% over a year earlier. After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the
volume of total retail sales increased by 17.2% in March 2010 when compared with a year
earlier. The relevant components of the Consumer Price Index are used as deflators.


The revised estimate of the value of total retail sales in February 2010, at $26.9 billion, increased by 35.8%
over February 2009, while the volume of total retail sales increased by 31.5%. This came after an increase
of 6.5% in value or 3.2% in volume in January. It should be noted that retail sales tend to show greater
volatility in the first two months of a year due to the timing of the Lunar New Year, against the background
that the local consumer spending normally attains a seasonal high immediately before the Festival. For the
first two months of 2010 combined, retail sales increased by 18.7% in value or 15.1% in volume from a
year earlier.

Taking the first three months of 2010 together, total retail sales increased by 18.8% in value or 15.8% in
volume over the same period a year earlier.


Analysed by broad type of retail outlet and comparing March 2010 with March 2009, the volume of sales
of motor vehicles and parts increased the most, by 49.7%. This was followed by sales of
miscellaneous consumer durable goods (+38.8% in volume); electrical goods and photographic
equipment (+30.1%); jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (+27.7%); wearing apparel
(+25.6%); commodities in department stores (+15.9%); footwear, allied products and other clothing
accessories (+13.5%); miscellaneous consumer goods (+9.5%); furniture and fixtures (+6.9%); food,
alcoholic drinks and tobacco (+6.6%); and fuels (+5.2%).
Based on the seasonally adjusted series, the volume of total retail sales increased by 5.3% in the first
quarter of 2010 when compared with the preceding quarter.

Kindly note that the volume of retail sales is derived from the value of retail sales after adjusting for price
changes. The relevant components of the Consumer Price Index are used as deflators.

In parallel with the rebasing of Consumer Price Index, the series of value and volume indices of retail sales
have both been rebased, taking October 2004 to September 2005 as the new base period. As from the data
release for the reference month of June 2006, the published value and volume indices of retail sales and
their year-on-year rates of changes relate to the rebased series.

These retail sales statistics are primarily intended to measure the sales receipts of goods sold by local retail
establishments, for gauging the short-term business performance of the local retail sector. They cover
consumer spending on goods but not on services. Moreover, they include spending on goods by visitors in
Hong Kong but not by Hong Kong residents outside Hong Kong. Hence they should not be regarded as a
comprehensive indicator of overall consumer spending. In this context, it may be noted that the share of
consumer spending on services in overall consumer spending has been increasing over time.

Users interested in the trend of overall consumer spending should refer to the quarterly series of private
consumption expenditure (PCE), which is a major component of the Gross Domestic Product. Compiled
from a wide range of data sources, PCE covers consumer spending on both goods (purchased from all
channels) and services by Hong Kong residents whether domestically or abroad.

二零一零年三月的零售業總銷貨價值的臨時估計為247億元,較上年同月上升19.0%。扣除期間價
格變動後,二零一零年三月的零售業總銷貨數量較上年同月上升17.2%。所用的物價平減指數是從
消費物價指數內相關的項目選取。


繼一月份零售業總銷貨價值及數量分別上升6.5%及3.2%之後,二零一零年二月零售業總銷貨價值的
修訂估計為269億元,較二零零九年二月上升35.8%,而總銷貨數量則上升31.5%。但應注意零售業
於每年首兩個月的銷貨額一般會受農曆新年時間的影響而較為波動,在節日前本地消費開支通常為
季節性的高點。與上年同期比較,二零一零年首兩個月合計的零售業總銷貨價值上升18.7%,總銷
貨數量則上升15.1%。

與二零零九年同期比較,二零一零年首季的零售業總銷貨價值上升18.8%,而總銷貨數量則上升15.8
%。

按商店主要類別分析,二零一零年三月與二零零九年三月比較,汽車及汽車零件的銷貨數量升幅最
大,上升49.7%。其次為雜項耐用消費品(零售量上升38.8%)、電器及攝影器材(上升30.1%)、
珠寶首飾、鐘錶及名貴禮物(上升27.7%)、服裝(上升25.6%)、百貨公司貨品(上升15.9%)、
鞋類、有關製品及其他衣物配件(上升13.5%)、雜項消費品(上升9.5%)、傢具及固定裝置(上
升6.9%)、食品、酒類飲品及煙草(上升6.6%),以及燃料(上升5.2%)。


二零一零年首季與二零零九年第四季比較,經季節性調整的零售業總銷貨數量上升5.3%。


這些零售業銷貨額數字主要是用來量度本地零售業機構單位銷售貨品的收益,以評估本地零售業短
期的業務表現。數據包括消費者在貨品方面(但不包括在服務方面)的開支。此外,它們包括訪港旅
客(但不包括香港居民在外地)在貨品方面的開支。因此,數據不應視為消費者整體開支的一個全面
指標。在這情況下,數據使用者可能注意到消費者服務開支在消費者整體開支當中所佔的比重越來
越大。

對消費者整體開支趨勢有興趣的人仕,應參考作為本地生產總值一個主要組成部份的私人消費開支
的按季數列。根據廣泛資料來源編製的私人消費開支統計數字,涵蓋了香港居民不論在本地或外地
在貨品(從所有途徑購買的貨品)和服務兩方面的開支。
