Laurin has been winning awards as an entertainer all of her life. Born in Clio, South Carolina, she began dancing at age 4. Awards started coming at 8 years old, when she won first place in a school talent show singing Down at Papa Joes. That award marked Laurin’s debut as a singer. Soon Laurin’s teenage years were spent traveling around South Carolina singing with her dad’s band, while taking the time to train in tap, jazz, ballet and modern dance. In between, Laurin somehow fit in her schoolwork. Her dance training continued at the University of North Carolina where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a degree in dance. Laurin has been a featured performer for theme parks at Busch Gardens- Williamsburg, Frontier Land-London, England and Opryland U.S.A. in Nashville. At Opryland she joined the Country Music U.S.A. show and also accomplished one of her dreams when she had the opportunity to work with Brenda Lee in the Spirit of America show. Laurin has toured with Brenda Lee AND Toby Keith, bringing her powerful stage presence and dynamic vocal skills to audiences around the world. Currently, Laurin continues to be a featured entertainer in many pageants all over the United States! I have thought so much about this title and the friendships that it has allowed me to develop. I have thought “as I walk away from my title I leave behind those many people who have impacted my life in so many ways.” “I’ll leave with tears in my eyes, as I know I have to walk away from the people who have brought me so much happiness.” I realized the truth is that I am not “walking away!” My reign as Miss West Virginia Teen USA is simply up. And, those people will always be a part of my life because friendship does not have a term limit. It is forever! The Miss Teen USA Pageant Along with my family, 13 very special people took the time to travel to the Bahamas and support me at the Miss Teen USA Pageant. Sharon Swearingen, Alana and Brigitte Morris, Allie and Paula Brandfass, Angela and Samatha Patsy, Diana Grimett, Devin Sears, her parents, Scott and Tracey Sears and grandparents, Stanley and Karen Sears. I can not thank you enough for attending. You will never know how much this meant to me. The Pageant Associates staff Steve, Jennifer, Ashley, Jessie, Andrew, Kristin, Connie, Ron and Gary. Thank you for being so supportive throughout the year. I appreciate all the hard work you put into making your titleholders feel so special. It has been an honor to be a part of the Pageant Associates team and I will miss it greatly. Woody, you have always been there to make me laugh. I am truly going to miss you. Oh yea, I can’t wait to see the book of Micahisms you are going to write!! Skylene, my pageant sis! I enjoyed sharing my reign with you and couldn’t have asked for a better big sis! I love you! The WV Three Rivers Festival Family Joe Merendino and the Board of Directors of the WV Three Rivers Festival, I couldn’t have been more honored to have represented your festival as your West Virginia Three River’s Teen when I won this title. Sharon and Mike Swearingen. I love you both. You are the sweetest, most generous people I know. Sharon, I can’t imagine not having you next to me on my next flight and making me laugh so hard. Angela Patsy of Oliverio’s Prom & Bridal Boutique You have watched me grow these past 4 years without judging me or placing pressures on me that I could not handle. I know that you will always be around even when I decide to walk away from the pageant world. Thank you for the wonderful memories. My State Director, “Papa Randy” Thank you for all that you have done for me. I truly appreciate the time you devote to making your girls as prepared as possible. I did not walk away from the Miss Teen USA Pageant thinking “if I would have,” because I knew I had the best training, the best wardrobe and the best advice one could possibly ask for. Thank you for that. I love you and will miss your fatherly advice. To my Family My brother Joey, not the most avid pageant fan, but when I was in the Bahamas I knew you were my biggest fan. My dad! You always had a way to make me feel as special as one can possibly feel. Through the airwaves, you kept a huge part of the state updated on my reign. I love you. Ryan, you have been so supportive throughout my reign and I couldn’t have asked for a better fan. I love you and I look forward to our future together. Mom, my best friend, I know that you tried to make me as independent as possible, even when I made it difficult for you to do. I may not show it now, but leaving you will be the hardest thing I will ever do. I would never have obtained this success had it not been for you. You have put your life on hold so I can pursue my dream. You always had my back in the good times and the bad and I love you for that. To the many people who have been so supportive and who have taken this journey with me. Melodie Stemple, Debbie Warner, Jim and Pam Cuppari, Ashley Reed , Katie Olenick, Nancy Oliverio and the many others who impacted my life. Thank you for being so kind to me over the years and being there for me when I needed you. I will cherish my pageant memories and even though I’ll walk away with a tear in my eye today, it is a tear of happiness! I will never forget the experience and joy I had representing the state of West Virginia as your 2008 Miss West Virginia Teen USA. Miss West Virginia TeenUSA Contestants 1. Age: 16 2. Age: 14 3. Sanders & Associates, Inc., assumes no responsibility for the failure of sponsors to fulfill their commitment. I would like to welcome and thank all of you for joining us for the 2009 Miss West Virginia USA & West Virginia Teen USA Pageants. Who would have thought that a freckled faced, baggy short wearing, short haired, Tomboy would become the lucky young woman with the opportunity to represent our beautiful state as Miss West Virginia USA 2008. After the pageant was over, Randy Sanders sat me down and told me “your life is going to change, from this day forward.” Man was he right! I have had the opportunity to travel across our great state meeting, speaking with and truly getting to know the phenomenal people of West Virginia. Through this I have not only grown as a person, both spiritually and emotionally, but have had a journey that I shall forever cherish! I had the chance to work closely with Kristin Morrison-Flowers, my Titleholder Manager, who not only has kept me organized but also “somewhat” on time! Kristin told me during one of our first conversations to “make as many appearances as you can, because your year will be over before you know it!” Wow was she right! I dedicated my year to improving the health of West Virginia’s youth. Childhood Obesity is a huge issue for today’s adolescents, and through my work with the program “Let’s Get Moving” and my own Kids Sports Camp, sponsored by Pro-Performance of Morgantown, I feel that I have made a healthy difference in lives of some children and their families. I also had the opportunity to be involved with many other activities. I appeared in several fair, festival and homecoming parades. I worked with the Toys for Tots program, which is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. I met and spoke with Governor Joe Manchin and Micah and I both worked with the Salvation Army ringing bells for the Red Kettle cause. I worked with the Children’s Christmas Craft Day in Ravenswood; the Parkersburg’s Women’s Club Christmas Gift Wrap; and traveled to Ocean City, Maryland to work along side several Miss USA titleholders to raise over $20,000 for the Best Buddies foundation. Micah and I both participated in the “Queen for a Day” program at Ruby Memorial’s Children’s Hospital and I was able to travel back home to speak at the 2008 Relay High, which was an event that I helped originate as a senior in high school. I traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia to participate with the StandOut Productions’ team, Chelsea Cooley and AT Dunn. I spoke at Parkersburg South High School’s (my alma mater) Prom Promise. I golfed in a local Relay for Life fundraising tournament, spoke with young scholar athletes at the 2008 North South Football game, helped with fundraising at Children’s Miracle Network charity golf tournament, and worked with the Parkersburg volunteer fire department to help raise both money and awareness for muscular dystrophy. Not to mention, I had the opportunity to meet and make connections with some pretty famous people! To this year’s contestants, don’t just follow your dreams, CHASE THEM DOWN! Dream big, have an open heart and an enthusiastic attitude. I know this is so cliché to say that “you are all winners,” but regardless of who walks away with the crown this weekend, each of you will have learned something. It is what you do with the experience that will make you successful. Only one can be named Miss West Virginia USA 2009 and to that young lady -- you are in for the experience of a lifetime, so take full advantage of it. You are representing something truly magnificent. You will be changed, so be prepared and make a lasting impression. I don’t think I would be the woman that I am today, nor would this dream have come true, without the help of the following; The Miss Universe Organization, Randy Sanders, Kristin Morrison, Angela Patsy, Woody Miller, Charlotte & Micah Michael, C’Anna Keffer, Kasey Montgomery, Amy Epling, Jamie Womack, Shauna McGrew, Lois Lantz , Aaron Burton, Kassie Castranova, Linda and Jim Anderson, Arnie Sue and Trista Kelley, Cecilia Keffer, Sharon and Mike Swearingen, Rex and Debbie Longwell, Robert Dunlevy and last but not least, my grandmother, mother, father and my heavenly father up above. Thank you all for making this year “A Dream Come True.” With a Smile, Miss West Virginia USA 2008 Miss West Virginia USA Contestants 35. Age: 19 36. Age: 20 37. Age: 24 38.
