The purpose of the Hardware Features training module is to provide the user with
a guided introduction to the components and design elements of the GoBook
III. Upon completion of this module, the user will be able to identify the key
features of the computer and their function.

Feature Descriptions

Colorvue™ Touch Screen Display
The Hardcase Rugged includes a 12.1-inch, Enhanced XGA “outdoor-viewable”
color display with integrated touch screen. The touch sensitive screen allows
you to start programs and input data using the approved pen (stylus) that comes
with the computer.
The Colorvue Transmissive display technology uses a built-in backlight, for
easier reading in most ambient light conditions, and features TFT technology with
a polarized touch screen. The backlight remains on whenever the display is
powered on. The Transmissive display enhancement is intended to increase
display brightness and improve outdoor visibility. This technology also works in
sunlight.


Nitevue™ Keyboard
The Nitevue™ keyboard glows when periodically exposed to ambient light. The
phosphorescence and enlarged key labels optimize view-ability in low light. To
maximize low light view-ability, recharge the keyboard periodically by exposing it
to ambient light. **NOTE: Due to filtering, the display is not an effective ambient
light source.


EL Keyboard
The EL (electroluminescent) keyboard provides a backlight under the non-
florescent key tops. This backlight allows the keyboard to be used in the dark
and can be turned on and off as needed.

Antenna
Units that offer radio coverage have an antenna attached to the left side of the
display. The antenna is flexible and rotates to become flush with the side of the
computer when not in use. The antenna should be rotated to a perpendicular-to-
earth position when the radio is in use, (IE…straight up & down).

Internal Microphone
The GoBook III™ is equipped with a weatherized internal microphone located
behind the small hole that is to the left of the Hard Disk Drive indicator on the
ICON cover.      The microphone can be used with various software applications
that require voice or sound input.

Touch Pad / Mouse Buttons
The Hardcase Rugged utilizes a 3-button touch pad to move the cursor around
the screen. The left and right buttons are the same in function as those on a two-
button mouse. The middle button provides up or down scrolling.

Stylus
A custom touch screen pen (stylus) is supplied with each unit and is stored in a
slot located on the left sides of the display. Note: The stylus storage slot is
shown in the Left View photo.

ICON Cover LEDs
The assembly below the display
is called the “ICON cover” and it
houses seven LEDs that act as
indicators of the status of the
unit. From left to right in the
picture below, the LEDs indicate
the activity status of the wireless
LAN/GPS, Bluetooth, Hard Drive
activity, Media Bay activity. Num
Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll
Lock.


LED Power and Wireless Activity Indicators

The four case front LEDs located to the lower right of the touchpad provide an
indication, from left to right, of the following:


     External Power LED
The External Power LED, the       first LED (as viewed from left to right), indicates
that external power is applied.    Supplied power can be from an AC wall outlet, a
vehicle-mounted cradle or a        vehicle power adapter. A steady illuminated
External Power LED indicates      the computer is connected to an external power
source.

     Power LED

A steady green Power LED indicates the unit is on and operating. A flashing
LED indicates the unit has suspended to RAM.

     Battery LED
A steady illuminated Battery LED (located third from far left in the group)
indicates that the battery is charging.
A flashing LED indicates the battery is low. If the unit is not plugged into external
power within a few minutes, the unit will go into a Suspend power mode.
If the battery is low in a radio-equipped Hardcase Rugged that is in the middle of
communication, the unit will suspend power to the radio. The unit must be
plugged into external power to continue radio communication.
If the LED is not illuminated then the battery is fully charged. The LED will also
be off if a main battery pack is not fitted.


   Wireless LED (if applicable)
The Wireless LED, the fourth LED (as viewed from left to right), applies to those
units containing a radio modem.
The Wireless LED indications are as follow:

       Green                 Radio modem is on
       Blinking Green        Message waiting
       Not Lit               Radio modem is off

Connect the DC power cable from the AC adapter to this jack.

3-VGA Out (External Video) Port
The 15-pin monitor can connect your computer to an external monitor.

4-Multi-I/O Port
60-pin Multi-IO port

5-Serial Port
The 9-pin serial port can be used to connect your computer to serial devices such a
fax/modem or a serial mouse. This port is identified as COM1 and is 16550A
compatible.

6-PS/2 Port
You can use the mini-DIN PS/2 port to connect your computer to a PS/2 device such as
a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. Note: This port will only support one PS/2 Device

7-Fax/modem RJ-11 Jack
The fax/modem can transmit data using the 56 Kbps V.90 or V.92 protocol, and send
and receive faxes at 14.4 Kbps. In some countries, local regulations may not permit the
use of the fax/modem designed for this system. In this case, you may use a PCMCIA
modem.

8-LAN RJ-45 Jack (optional)
With an Ethernet LAN you can make LAN connections without installing PC cards.
Connection speed is 10/100 Mbps.

9 - IEEE1394a (Firewire® 400)
IEEE1394a is a very fast external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of up to
400Mbps .

A single 1394 port can be used to connect up to 63 external devices. In addition to its
high speed, 1394 also supports isochronous data - delivering data at a guaranteed rate.
This makes it ideal for devices that need to transfer high levels of data in real-time, such
as video devices.

Like USB, 1394 supports both Plug-and-Play and hot plugging, and also provides power
to peripheral devices.


10- USB (Universal Serial Bus) Port
USB is the current standard for attaching input devices, scanners, and other devices to a
PC. USB devices can be chained together on a single cable. The GoBook III USB port is
2.0 compliant

The Security Slot can be used with a standard laptop-locking device, such as a
Kensington Lock. You can connect the Hardcase Rugged to a large object with the lock
to prevent theft of your GoBook III. See the documentation that comes with your lock

Feature Descriptions

Battery Bay

To access the battery rotate the two battery door latches on the far left and right
of the cover to unlatch the door cover, then lift the battery door away from the
unit to remove it.

The Hardcase Rugged should always be shut down prior to removal of the
battery, as there is a possibility that data may be lost when the unit shuts down
by removing the battery. Lift out the battery using the black fabric tab.

About the Battery

The battery is a Lithium-Ion "smart" battery. It contains a temperature sensor
and a memory device that stores information about the battery, such as how
much charge is left and how many times it has been recharged. The parameters
for the "management" of the battery are also kept in the battery’s memory. The
life expectancy will depend strongly on the care of the battery, the individual
usage pattern and the Hardcase Rugged specific configuration.

Caution: Plug into external power and shutdown the computer before removing
the battery to prevent potential loss of data.

The battery pack is most efficient at room temperature. However, Its efficiency
fails as the temperature varies from that range. The chart below shows
approximate capacity values with respect to temperatures.

To prevent damage, the charge circuitry is turned off for temperatures that are
too high (above approximately 115°F or 46°C) or too low (below approximately
32°F or 0°C). **Note: A “cold-soaked” battery of 0°C only has about 10%
capacity and may not power a unit.

External RF Antenna Contact
A RF antenna contact is located on the bottom of the unit for use in connecting
an external vehicle-mounted antenna via the optional vehicle cradle for improved
RF coverage. This contact will only be present on radio equipped or radio ready
units.

Cradle Connector
On the bottom of the unit in one of the eight corners is an 8-pin connector. The
cradle connector board is fitted on all units.

The cradle contact connector on the unit mates with the vehicle cradle mounted
in a vehicle, which provides power to the unit and supplies access to the USB
and RF connectors.

One of the corner connections is larger than the rest and resembles a bulls-eye.
This is the coaxial connection for an external antenna mounted on the vehicle (if
applicable). Units not built with radio or radio ready configurations will not have
the coaxial cradle connection. The cradle contact connector also provides access
to a second and third USB port via the cradle.

Module 2: Getting Started
The purpose of the Getting Started module is to instruct the user on fundamental
operating tips for the GoBook III™ computer. Upon completion of this training
module, the user will be able to demonstrate basic operation and perform typical
configuration activities on the computer.

Replacing the Battery

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Unplug power supply if connected.
3. Turn the computer upside down.
4. Rotate the two battery cover latches to the unlocked position and remove the
    cover.
5. Using the exposed fabric strip, lift the battery pack up and out of the battery
    bay.
6. Orient the replacement battery correctly and insert it into the battery
    compartment ensure a portion of black fabric strap tail is exposed outside the
    compartment. Firmly slide the battery into the compartment, making sure it is
    fully seated
7. Replace the battery cover over the battery bay and rotate the two latches to
    the “locked” position.

Removable Hard Disk Drive
The Hardcase Rugged is fitted with a removable Hard Disk Drive (HDD), which is
accessible via the battery bay. To remove the unit’s hard disk drive (HDD),
proceed with the following steps:
    1. Ensure the Hardcase Rugged is powered off
    2. Disconnect the power supply if connected
    3. Remove the battery bay hatch cover
    4. Using exposed the blank fabric strip, lift the battery pack up and out of the
       battery bay
    5. Remove HDD set screw located in the right corner of the HDD inside the
       battery bay. (See photo below)
    6. Locate the black HDD release lever (See photo below) on the left corner
       of the HHD inside the battery bay. Placing your finger on the top of the
       release lever, pull the lever towards the battery bay cavity and the HDD
       will partially eject.
    7. Carefully pull the drive out and up from the battery bay


    To reinstall the HDD, reverse the above steps ensuring that the HDD is fully
    seated home before reinstalling the battery into the battery bay

Installing a Smart Card
The GoBook III supports a Smart Card reader as an optional configuration
option. Smart cards can be used with the smart-card reader to authenticate a
user and/or provide security for Internet transactions.
A smart card resembles a credit card in size and shape, but inside it is
completely different. The inside of a smart card usually contains an embedded 8-
bit microprocessor where a normal credit card is a simple piece of plastic with an
embedded magnetic stripe. The microprocessor is under a gold contact pad on
one side of the card. Think of the microprocessor as replacing the usual
magnetic stripe on a credit card or debit card.

Turning the Computer On and Off
You can operate the computer while the battery is charging, while on external
power or on battery power only.

To turn on the computer:

•   Press the round gray power button located to the right of the activity LEDs on
    ICON cover

To turn off the computer:

1. From the Start menu, click Shut Down.
2. Select Shut Down from the Shut Down dialog box, and click OK.


Conserving Power
Standby
Conserving battery power is most important when operating in a mobile
environment. Getting the most productivity on a single charge of the battery is a

key issue. The Hardcase Rugged provides two battery power conservation
modes, Standby and Suspend to Disk.

Standby
Standby mode does not turn the unit “off”. In Standby, all power is removed from
the unit with the exception of a small amount of power to the memory. The unit
can also be configured so that the radio (if equipped) remains powered on while
in Standby mode, so messages continue to be received.


To place the computer in Standby press the Fn + F3 key combination. The
power button can also be configured within Windows to act as a suspend button.
In addition, the GoBook III supports suspend on lid close feature. This feature
can be configured through the control panel using the Power Options utility.
To resume, press the gray power button or hold and press any key on the
keyboard. The unit will resume power and the screen display will return.
Note: Only CRMA WLAN is supported during suspend

Using Function Keys
The GoBook III™ keyboard is equipped with a series of function keys labeled F1
through F12.       Most of these keys control special functions when used in
combination with the Fn key located in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.
Hold down the FN key then tap the corresponding function key to perform the
desired operation.

Special Keys
EL Keyboard On/Off

The FN + Shift key combination will turn the EL keyboard backlight on and off.




Display Brightness

The brightness of the display can be adjusted by using the Fn key plus the F6 or
F7 keys.

To darken the screen, press and hold the Fn key then press the F6 key. A sun
with a down arrow appears on this key. By holding both keys down the screen
will quickly darken to its darkest setting.

To brighten the screen, press and hold the Fn key then press the F7 key. A sun
with an up arrow appears on this key. By holding both keys down the screen will
quickly lighten to it’s lightest setting.


Volume

The speaker volume can be adjusted by using the Fn plus the F8, F9 or F10
keys. Sound waves with an increase or decrease level appear on the F8 and F9
keys. A speaker with an X in it appears on the F10 key.

To decrease the volume, press and hold the Fn key, then press the F8 key. Do
this repeatedly to reduce the volume to its quietest setting.

To increase the volume, press and hold the Fn key, then press the F9 key. Do
this repeatedly to increase the volume to its loudest setting.

To mute sound output, press and hold the Fn key, then press the F10 key.
Pressing the key combination again will re-enable sound output.

LCD Screen Toggle

The LCD display can be toggled off and on by pressing and holding the Fn key,
then press the F1 key. Caution should be used when using this function as a
turned off screen can be confused with a suspended unit.

LCD and External Display Toggle

The LCD display and External Display can be toggled off and on by pressing and
holding the Fn key, then press the F2 key. This toggle has three possible
positions. When the unit is first powered on the external monitor and the LCD
screen are both enabled. Pressing the Fn-F2 key combination once turns the
LCD screen off while leaving the external monitor on. Pressing the Fn-F2 key
combination again turns on the LCD screen and turns off the external monitor.
Pressing the Fn-F2 key combination a third time returns the toggle to the original
setting.

Adjusting the Mouse
Several adjustments can be made to the mouse such as speed, acceleration,
and pointer trails (enable, disable and length) as well as double click time. To
access these adjustments:
1. Click the Start button on the Task bar.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click one time on Control Panel.
4. Double click on the Mouse icon.

    •   The Buttons tab will allow adjustments such as switching the left and right
        mouse buttons and double click timing.
    •   The Pointers tab will allow the selection of a pointer scheme.
    •   The Motion tab allows the adjustment of pointer speed and pointer tails.


Touch Screen
The 12.1-inch display assembly of the Hardcase Rugged includes an Enhanced
Transmissive, TFT technology display with an integrated polarized touch screen.
The touch screen can make the unit significantly easier to use, especially if the
user application is designed with the touch screen in mind. The touch screen
assembly is basically a glass plate covered with a layer of Mylar. Each of these
components has half of a resistance grid built into it. When a point contact is
made that causes the two to meet, the coordinates of the contact are interpreted
by the Hardcase Rugged and the cursor is placed in that location accordingly.

Touch Screen Calibration

If you cannot select objects accurately with
the stylus, you may need to re-calibrate the
touch screen.

Calibrating the touch screen involves
touching and releasing the crosshair on your
screen with your stylus to align the
background image with the touch screen
grid.

To calibrate the touch screen click the Start
menu, select Settings, Control Panel and
then the Touch Screen Calibrator Icon.

Touch Screen Guidelines

-   Always use an Ergo approved stylus
-   Never use hard, sharp, or abrasive implements on the touch screen such as
    ballpoint pens, pencils or keys. They could damage the screen.
-   To clean the touch screen, apply Formula 409 PRO cleaner to a soft, clean,
    dry cloth, and wipe the screen. **Note: Display cleaning cloths are available
    and listed in the Field Replaceable Assemblies module.

Module 3: Power Management
The Power Management module provides detailed information on properly
managing the battery to obtain the most productive Hardcase Rugged usage on
a single charge of the battery.

Low Battery Power Notification
The Hardcase Rugged is programmed to notify you in different ways as to the
status of the battery.
One way of notification is through pop up message boxes. When the battery is
used throughout the day to near depletion, the unit will display a pop up message
box to notify the end user that the battery is exhausted. This message signals
the end user to seek external power as soon as possible. Depending on the
settings, the power on LED light may begin to flash. If the user chooses to ignore
these notifications, the unit will begin to shut off power to devices that drain
excessive power such as radio, backlight, etc. Once depleted, the unit will shut
down until connected to external power. **Note: Any data not saved prior to this
shut down could be lost.
A second way of notification is through audible tones or “beeping”. When the
battery is used throughout the day to depletion, the unit will emit three low-toned
beeps to notify the end user that the battery is nearly exhausted. This tone
signals the end user to seek external power as soon as possible.


Mobile System Monitor

The Mobile System Monitor program is a Windows-based application that is
designed to provide status on battery performance as well as general system
information.

icon) will briefly display a message to indicate if the unit is on external power or

This menu allows the user to set the level of computer performance while on
battery power. The higher the CPU % the less amount of time the computer will
operate under battery power. The recommended setting for this is Good
Performance (50% CPU on battery).

The Alerts Window provides information on possible system issues relating to the
battery, hard disk, fan operation and log file errors.

information as to the current battery level, status, wear and general battery
system information.




"Memory" Effect

Lithium Ion batteries do not develop a "memory" effect when they are partially
discharged and recharged repetitively without a full discharge. However, the
battery gauge may loose some accuracy. Allowing the battery to reach a state of
100% charge will reset the battery gauge.

As the unit is utilized on a day-to-day basis, the battery will begin to lose its
maximum capacity progressively, but not necessarily linearly. Subsequently,
over the course of several months the battery capacity will diminish. How fast
the capacity diminishes is dependent on the depth of discharge and the number
of discharges. As the capacity diminishes, the battery gauge will loose accuracy.
This will be noticed when the system shuts down from a low battery condition
before the battery gauge indicates that the battery is low. When this occurs, the
battery should be re-calibrated. To prevent this from occurring, the battery
should be re-calibrated every three to four months.

provides information as to the current status of the HDD Heater if installed.




Battery Calibration
Battery Calibration is used to program the battery gauge with the actual battery
capacity.

The calibration process improves the accuracy of the battery gauge by fully
charging the battery, totally draining all charge from the battery and recharging it.
This cycle allows the capacity to be measured and the battery gauge calibrated.

The calibration, if required, should be initiated during a time period where the unit
will not have to be used. Failure to allow sufficient time for the calibration
process to complete could result in a dead battery or poor battery performance.
Because the calibration history is stored in the battery, the battery need not be
kept with its original GoBook III. The battery gauge will not accurately reflect

the battery charge unless the battery has experienced a complete calibration
process.

The calibration process builds heat in the battery. When performing this process,
it is critical that the display be left open and that the unit is kept in 65°F to 75°F
(18.3°C to 23.8°C) environment. If the battery gets too hot or cold, the calibration
process will be delayed, and possibly aborted, and it may be necessary to start
the process over.

The Calibration process is not only used to improve battery gauge accuracy on
used batteries, but it is also used to ensure battery gauge accuracy on new
batteries.


When to Calibrate the Battery

Ergo recommends that the battery be calibrated:
1) Before the unit is to be used for the first time
2) After 12-16 weeks of use

How to Calibrate the Battery

To calibrate the battery, click Start→Programs→Mobile Computer Tools and
select the Battery Calibration icon. Follow the directions on the screen to
calibrate the battery.

General Li-Ion Battery Information
Charging Li-Ion Packs
Lithium Ion batteries maintain capacity better if they are regularly recharged.
Charge the batteries whenever possible during use throughout the workday. At
the end of the work shift, fully recharge the battery so the power calculation or
“gas gauge” is accurately re-calibrated. Note that frequent incomplete charges
will lead to progressively larger errors in the calculations, which only a full charge
will remedy.

Note: If the battery pack is too hot or too cold, charging is disabled.


Battery Storage
Stored Li-Ion battery packs will gradually deteriorate, particularly if they are not
stored in ideal conditions, and their life expectancy will decrease. When storing
Li-Ion battery packs for extended periods, you should consider these factors:

•   Fully charged Li-Ion battery packs deteriorate faster than partly discharged
    ones. For ideal storage, charge the packs to 100% and then discharge them
    to 50% charge before storing.
•   Do not allow stored Li-Ion packs to discharge completely, as this may
    permanently damage them. Stored packs should be recharged to 50%
    capacity every six (6) months.
•   Charge installed battery packs every 6 days to maintain their charge capacity.
•   Storing packs at temperatures near 0°C (32°F) retards self-discharge and
    battery aging; packs that are to be stored for a long period are best kept at
    low temperatures where practical.

If you store battery packs at normal ambient temperatures, use the following
charging policy to maintain battery pack condition:

•   Charge installed packs every 21 days to maintain their charge capacity.
•   Charge uninstalled packs every 6 months.



Battery Management Tips
• Avoid allowing the Li-Ion battery pack to completely discharge.
• Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures for long periods, which can shorten
   battery charge life and potentially damage the battery.
• Provide charge to the battery whenever possible during the workday.
• Connect the Hardcase Rugged to a charging source and fully charge at the
   end of day. This ensures the “gas gauge” is accurate and provides a charged
   battery for the next workday.


Frequently Asked Battery Questions
1. Does it harm the Li-Ion battery pack to frequently “top off” the batteries?
No. Connect the Hardcase Rugged to a charging source whenever available.

2. What constitutes a charge cycle?
A charge to full termination. i.e.100%. This occurs when the battery has been
fully recharged.

3. Where can general battery charge state information be obtained?
Refer to the section above “Mobile System Monitor - Battery Status Window”.

4. What effect will temperature have on battery life and performance?
Using the Hardcase Rugged at very low temperatures will reduce the battery
performance, and you may not achieve as many working hours on a full charge
as at more normal temperatures. The battery performance will recover when the
Hardcase Rugged returns to a higher temperature. Note that for storage, Li-Ion
batteries prefer low temperature, as this reduces Li-Ion aging effects.

Important Safety Information
CAUTION: Do not attempt to open, puncture or disposes of the battery pack in
fire. The battery pack can burst or explode releasing hazardous chemicals.

•   Observe the safety instructions printed on the battery.
•   Only use Ergo Li-Ion battery packs with your computer. Replace the battery
    pack only with the approved Ergo part.
•   Dispose of or recycle used batteries in accordance with the manufacturer’s
    recommendations and local customs.
•   Do not abuse, deliberately pierce, or subject the battery pack to excessive
    impact.
•   Immediately discontinue use of the battery if it appears damaged or abnormal
    in any way, consult your local provider for advice.
•   Do not immerse the battery pack in liquid.
•   Do not subject the battery pack to temperatures in excess of 60ºC (140ºF).
•   Do not short together the battery connections. Do not store the battery pack
    with metallic objects due to the risk of short circuit.
•   Battery chemical leakage is harmful. In the unlikely event of battery leakage;
    DO NOT TOUCH. In case of accidental contact with the eyes or skin,
    immediately wash with running water and seek medical advice. In the case of
    accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention.
•   Keep batteries out of children’s reach.

Start-Up Problems Check List
•    Try these things first
    - Verify that the power is on by checking the status of
       the Battery LED
    - Check the A/C connections and verify the status of the
       External Power LED
    - Confirm that the battery is installed and charged
    - Verify that the LCD has been selected
    - Adjust the display brightness
    - Verify that any required cables are properly connected
    - Shutdown and restart the computer from the Start Menu
    - Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and check the Task Manager for problems.
•    If possible, review the on-line GoBook III™ User’s Manual for a solution.
•    If you cannot find a solution for your situation, try one of the resources listed
     below.
     - If you are having a problem with a computer application, use the online
         Help that comes with the application to find a solution.
     - Windows Help is already installed on your system. To access this
         information, select Help from the Start Menu.

•     If all else fails, reset the computer using the Cold Boot process found in this
      module.

**NOTE: YOU SHOULD NOT USE THE COLD BOOT PROCESS UNLESS
ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. RESETTING THE COMPUTER IN THIS

Troubleshooting Techniques

Normal Shutdown

The first step in troubleshooting would be to soft boot the unit. This is
accomplished by accessing the Start Menu, located in the lower left corner of the
screen. Once the options are accessible, select “Shutdown”. When the dialog
box appears, select “Shut down”. This will close all applications on the unit and
shutdown the unit entirely.


Application Shutdown

Sometimes the problem with a software application may not be obvious. At times
the PC may appear to be sluggish and running slowly or not responding to
commands. In this case, the next step would be to close the application through
the Task Manager. To access the Task Manager, press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete
keys simultaneously and then release the keys. A window will appear on the
screen listing all programs that are currently running on the computer. A problem
in the software may be displayed in this box by the phrase “not responding”
appearing after the software program name. If this is the case, select the
application and then click “End Task” and allow the unit to close the specific
application.


Cold Boot Process

There will be times, however, that the unit will not be able to reboot by using the
Normal Shutdown method. These situations can be identified in that the unit is
locked up and not responding to any commands what so ever. In these cases, a
cold boot must be performed. This approach should be a last resort and only
when absolutely necessary. A cold boot will not close any files, programs or
processes before it shuts down the system. Any data not saved prior to doing a
cold boot will be lost.

To perform a cold boot, hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds. The
screen will go blank and the indicator lights will go off. Release and press the
power again button to power the unit.

**Note: If any files or applications were left open when the cold boot was
performed, the unit will automatically run Scandisk.

Another troubleshooting technique is to remove the battery from the unit. It
should be noted that the unit will need to be removed from all power sources and
that this process should take approximately 20 minutes. When the battery has

been reinserted and the unit has been connected to power, it is a good idea to
check the time and date settings.



Battery Problems
Some battery problems may be fixed by performing a battery Calibration.
Battery calibration should be performed no more than once every 12-16 weeks.
Executing a battery calibration more frequently than as outlined will result in
reduced battery life.

When a battery no longer attains 70% of its rated capacity it should be replaced.
The current battery capacity can be obtained in Mobile System Monitor
discussed in the Power Management Module of this document.


Analog Modem Testing
Steps to consider when testing a modem’s functionality

•   Is the modem’s hardware functional?
•   Does the laptop recognize that a valid modem is installed?
•   Is the proper driver software installed for this modem?
•   Is the driver correctly configured?
•   Is the telephone system working properly?
•   Is the cable from the RJ11 connector on the laptop to the plug in the wall
    working properly?
•   Is the RJ11 jack on the Hardcase Rugged working properly?
•   Is the modem’s communication middleware working properly?



Windows Modem Configuration Setup

Note: The configuration settings given here are typical of a Windows 2000
and Windows XP non-radio unit. If you are supporting a configuration that
has different settings, make sure that the required changes are well
documented.

•   Double-click on the “My Computer” icon.

•   Double-click on the “Control Panel” icon.

•   Double-click on the “Phone and Modem Options” icon.

•   Click on the “Modems” tab. The modem(s) installed will appear under the
    message: “The following modems are installed:” If not, the laptop is not
    communicating with the modem. You can proceed to the Internal Modem
    Test Procedure outline in the next section in an attempt to further
    troubleshoot the problem.

•   Click on “Properties”

•   On the “General” tab,
    • The port should have the communications port selected that the modem is
       attached to.
    • Speaker volume should be set to 1/4

Click on Advanced Port Settings button found under the Advanced tab.
    • The box entitled “Use FIFO buffers” should be checked.
    • Receive buffer should be set to 100%.
    • Transmit buffer should be set to 100%.

•   Click OK to accept these settings. This will return to the Advanced tab
    screen.

•   Click OK on the Advanced tab screen to close the Properties Window
    and return to the Modems Properties Window.

•   Click OK on the Modem Properties window to close.

•   Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the “Control Panel” window
    to close.

•   Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the “My Computer” Window
    to close.

Internal Modem Test Procedure

•   Double-click on the “My computer” icon.

•   Double-click on the “Control Panel” icon.

•   Double-click on the “Modem Settings ” icon

•   Click on the “Modem Helper” tab on the “Modems Properties” Window.




•   If you can dial out but are having difficulty establishing a connection, try the
    listed “Safe Mode 1” and/or “Safe Mode 2” options to see either resolves the
    connection difficulty. Ensure your landline cable is connected before
    proceeding.

•   For further diagnosis, click on the “Modem Helper” button at the bottom of the
    Modem Properties screen.

You should see a SmartLink window appear that lists 4 test categories on the
right side. To initiate the testing process for the first 3 tests, click on the play
button at the bottom left corner of the SmartLink window.




As the test progresses through each category, a green check mark will appear if
the test passed. If there was a problem during the test, a red X will appear and a
pop up window is displayed indicating the actual problem encountered during the
test.

If a problem occurs during the modem card test, the unit will need to be returned
for service.

To close the SmartLink diagnostics screen Click on the X in the upper left corner
of the window.

Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the “Modem Properties” window to
close.

Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the “Control Panel” window to close.

Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the “My Computer” Window to close.

The purpose of the Wireless Communication Troubleshooting module is to help
the user identify and fix problems they may encounter while using a radio-
equipped unit. A brief tutorial is provided to establish a basic understanding of
wireless communications.

A radio system must be able to generate a radio frequency signal that contains
information. It must be able to propagate or transmit that signal through the
atmosphere with enough strength to be received at the appropriate location. The
system must be able to perform this function with a high degree of reliability
under many different conditions.

Radio Packet Data Networks, in general, provide the capability for continuous
packet-data communications that is well suited for workforce automation
applications. For routine “PULL” access to data where the user initiates a host
connection and requests the data that they need, e.g. Internet browsers or
terminal emulation, virtually any configuration can work. But, in the state-of-the
art workforce automation systems being deployed today, there are additional
system configuration issues that must be considered in order to achieve the

ability to “PUSH” work assignments and other time-critical messages in real-time
to members of a field workforce.

 “PUSH” refers to the ability of host computing systems to independently send
data to field workers in real-time without waiting for the field worker to initiate a
connection. This is critical for dispatch messages and other time-critical
messages where you cannot afford to wait for the mobile worker to initiate a
connection. To dispatch workers in a same-day paradigm, dispatch systems
must be able to:

•   Send an unsolicited assignment/work-order message to a field worker on
    demand.
•   Receive confirmation of either successful or unsuccessful delivery within
    several minutes.

If delivery is unsuccessful within a given amount of time, the dispatch system
then withdraws the assignment and reassigns the job to another field worker that
is available.

Any wireless system that cannot execute these steps is essentially a “PULL”
solution. “PUSHING” information to the field is one of the key advantages of
wireless packet data services such as CDPD, GSM, GPRS, and CDMA.

A software issue that organizations must consider when configuring wireless
communication solutions for “PUSHING” data is Microsoft’s dial-up networking
stack under the Window’s 98 or 2000 operating systems. The Microsoft stacks
assume a circuit-switched wireline device is being used and that it makes no
sense to preserve that dial-up connection if the computer suspends. Dial-up
networking detects when the computer suspends and automatically drops the IP
connection (socket), causing further communications to be impossible until the
computer is resumed and the user or application reinitiates the connection.
Microsoft did not consider the possibility that a user may be equipped with a
wireless device that suspends, leaving the radio modem on and active, so that
when a time-critical message arrives, the computer can resume and process the
message. CDPD does not use the Microsoft stack and is not affected by this
problem.

A portable computer must be allowed to suspend, when not in use, in order to
preserve batteries so that it may be used as long as possible. Many wireless
communication cards and modems are designed and tested for operation with
only Microsoft dial-up networking and as a result will not allow the system to
suspend. The user must suspend the system manually.

Ergo considers the “PUSH” paradigm as a critical element of the products it
offers and has worked directly with the manufacturers to implement the capability
of the computer to resume from a Suspend mode on receipt of a message
(packet). To take advantage of this solution, organizations must make use of

middleware or applications that preserve an IP connection through a
suspend/resume cycle of the computer. These products often optimize IP
communications to better adapt to the limited bandwidth (compared to wireline
connections) and the intermittent nature (wireline connections do not go out of
coverage) that are common to wireless communications.

Improving Radio Coverage
Wireless connectivity between radio-equipped portable terminals and host
computers is unique and maintaining this wireless connectivity over a wide area
is fundamental to the usefulness of the network. As such, the scope and
reliability of radio coverage is a primary concern. Therefore, one of the most
important features of the wireless network is the degree of radio coverage
provided. Terrain, buildings or a crowded room influences RF coverage. There
are many things that can be done to improve coverage depending on location.


In any location:
1. Make sure the computer’s antenna is extended and is properly oriented.
2. Make sure the battery is well charged or the unit is connected to external
    power.
3. Performance can vary significantly at different times of the day.
4. Weather can affect performance.

In your vehicle:
1. Place unit in vehicle cradle.
2. Signal strength is stronger on top of hills rather than in valleys.
3. Mountains, trees or buildings may block the signal.

On the street:
1. Try all sides of a building to see which side provides the strongest radio
   signal.
2. Move from under trees. Pine needles absorb radio signals more than leaves.
3. Move away from overhead electrical wires.
4. Radio signals reflect off other buildings. Even in the signal shadow, the signal
   could be reflected back by another building.
5. Try not to hold the unit. If possible, place it in vehicle, on a cabinet or desk.
6. If holding the unit, turn the unit in 90-degree increments to avoid shielding it
   with your body.
7. The signal is 1 - 2 feet across; therefore, moving several feet in any direction
   may give different results.


Inside a Building:
1. Move toward windows.
2. Signals do not penetrate ground; therefore, there will probably be no signal in
   basements.

3. Reflective coatings on windows reflect radio signals. Try the side of the
   building, the least likely to have coated windows.
4. Closed metal blinds can reflect radio signals.
5. Dropped ceilings sometimes hide an accumulation of electrical cable.


Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
1. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is generated by switching circuitry closets
   or Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS) systems found near computer rooms
   and can block the radio signal.
2. Look for significant sources of electromagnetic radiation. The problem may
   emanate from a source between location and the radio base station.


When to Use Landline Communication
If these tips do not improve radio signal strength, switch to landline
communication. Switching to landline communication is faster than searching for
and trying to improve the radio signal.

Wireless LAN




In the simplest of terms, a wireless local-area network (WLAN) does exactly what
the name implies: it provides all the features and benefits of traditional LAN
technologies, such as Ethernet and Token Ring, without the limitations of wires
or cables. But to view a WLAN just in terms of the cables it does not have is to
miss the point: WLANs redefine the way we view LANs. Connectivity no longer
implies attachment. Local areas are measured not in feet or meters, but miles or
kilometers. An infrastructure need not be buried in the ground or hidden behind
the walls—an "infrastructure" can move and change at the speed of the
organization. This technology has several immediate applications, including:

    •    IT professionals or business executives who want mobility within the
         enterprise, perhaps in addition to a traditional wired network
  •     Business owners or IT directors who need flexibility for frequent LAN wiring
        changes, either throughout the site or in selected areas
  •     Any company whose site is not conducive to LAN wiring because of
        building or budget limitations, such as older buildings, leased space, or
        temporary sites
  •     Any company that needs the flexibility and cost savings offered by a line-of-
        sight, building-to-building bridge to avoid expensive trenches, leased lines,
        or right-of-way issues

WLANs use a transmission medium, just like wired LANs. Instead of using
twisted-pair or fiber-optic cable, WLANs use either infrared light (IR) or radio
frequencies (RF). Of the two, RF is far more popular for its longer-range, higher-
bandwidth, and wider coverage. Most wireless LANs today use the 2.4-gigahertz
(GHz) frequency band, the only portion of the RF spectrum reserved around the
world for unlicensed devices. The freedom and flexibility of wireless networking
can be applied both within buildings and between buildings.


In-Building WLANs

WLAN technology can take the place of a traditional wired network or extend its
reach and capabilities. Much like their wired counterparts, in-building WLAN
equipment consists of PC Card, Personal Computer Interface (PCI), and
Industry-Standard Architecture (ISA) client adapters, as well as access points,
which perform functions similar to wired networking hubs. Similar to wired LANs
for small or temporary installations, a WLAN can be arranged in a peer-to-peer or
ad hoc topology using only client adapters. For added functionality and range,
access points can be incorporated to act as the center of a star topology and
function as a bridge to an Ethernet network as well.

Within a building, wireless enables computing that is both mobile and connected.
With a PC Card client adapter installed in a notebook or hand-held PC, users can
move freely within a facility while maintaining access to the network.

Applying wireless LAN technology to desktop systems provides an organization
with flexibility impossible with a traditional LAN. Desktop client systems can be
located in places where running cable is impractical or impossible. Desktop PCs
can be redeployed anywhere within a facility as frequently as needed, making
wireless ideal for temporary workgroups and fast-growing organizations.


Building-to-Building WLANs

In much the same way that a commercial radio signal can be picked up in all
sorts of weather miles from its transmitter, WLAN technology applies the power
of radio waves to truly redefine the "local" in LAN. With a wireless bridge,
networks located in buildings miles from each other can be integrated into a
single local-area network. When bridging between buildings with traditional
copper or fiber-optic cable, freeways, lakes, and even local governments can be
impassible obstacles. A wireless bridge makes them irrelevant, transmitting data
through the air and requiring no license or right of way.

Without a wireless alternative, organizations frequently resort to wide area
networking (WAN) technologies to link together separate LANs. Contracting with

a local telephone provider for a leased line presents a variety of drawbacks.
Installation is typically expensive and rarely immediate. Monthly fees are often
quite high for bandwidth that by LAN standards is very low. A wireless bridge
can be purchased and then installed in an afternoon for a cost that is often
comparable to a T1 installation charge alone. Once the investment is made,
there are no recurring charges. In addition, today's wireless bridges provide the
bandwidth one would expect from a technology rooted in data, rather than voice,
communications.



Combination WLANs

Recently a combination of the in building and building to building WLAN has
been developed. Two examples are parking lots that are equipped with outdoor
access points and vehicles that are equipped with access points.

In the first example, a user is connected and disconnected with the company
LAN as they approach or leave the parking area. This allows the user full fast
access while in the vehicle. In most cases, the user will still be able to gain
access to a portion of the company LAN through a slower and more expensive
RF or landline WAN while they are outside of the WLAN area.

In the second example, a user connects to the company WAN with an RF
modem located inside the vehicle. When the user leaves the vehicle, the
computer is connected to the vehicle using a WLAN connection. The vehicle can
either contain a store of information or simple be a pass through to the WAN.

BlueTooth




Bluetooth systems create a personal-area network (PAN), or piconet, that may
fill a room or may encompass no more distance than that between the cell phone
on a belt-clip and the headset on your head.

When Bluetooth-capable devices come within range of one another, an electronic
conversation takes place to determine whether they have data to share or
whether one needs to control the other. The user doesn't have to press a button
or give a command -- the electronic conversation happens automatically. Once
the conversation has occurred, the devices -- whether they're part of a computer
system or a stereo -- form a network.

Once a piconet is established, the members randomly hop frequencies in unison
so they stay in touch with one another and avoid other piconets that may be
operating in the same room.

One of the ways Bluetooth devices avoid interfering with other systems is by
sending out very weak signals of 1 milliwatt. By comparison, the most powerful
cell phones can transmit a signal of 3 watts. The low power limits the range of a
Bluetooth device to about 10 meters, cutting the chances of interference
between your computer system and your portable telephone or television. Even
with the low power, the walls in your house won't stop a Bluetooth signal, making
the standard useful for controlling several devices in different rooms.

Global Positioning System (GPS)




The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is a worldwide radio-
navigation system formed from a constellation of 24 satellites and their ground
stations. In affect every square meter on Earth is given a unique address. With
GPS, you can find your way in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24
hours a day. GPS can also be used to track location and route information for
any vehicle or device that is GPS enabled.

How GPS Works:

A GPS unit uses the Satellite constellation as reference points to calculate
positions accurate to a matter of meters. Triangulation is used to determine a
location. To triangulate a location the GPS receiver uses the travel time of the
radio signals sent by the satellites. The receiver can figure out how far the signal
has traveled by timing how long it took the signal to arrive. When you measure
the distance to four located satellites, you can draw four spheres that all intersect
at one point thereby providing accurate global location data.

Many software vendors have developed applications that interface with GPS
enabled devices to provide mapping, location, and route planning information.
Using these applications in combination with the receiver can give you several
pieces of valuable information:

    •   How far you've traveled (odometer)
    •   How long you've been traveling
    •   Your current speed (speedometer)
    •   Your average speed
    •   A trail showing you exactly where you have traveled on the map
    •   Your estimated time of arrival

Troubleshooting GPS:

Due to the availability of several GPS based mapping applications and many
customer specific applications, it is quite difficult to identify all problems that may
arise with the end user and GPS function.

In an effort to provide a useful diagnostic level interface to the GPS module, Ergo
has placed a GPS utility in the standard image offerings. The utility is Windows
based and can not be run from SAFE Mode or DOS. It is recommended that all
troubleshooting steps be preceded by a cold boot (i.e. Complete Shutdown and
Restart).

To open the GPS interface application;


Click Start -> Run <Type> “c:\ix\oemtools\gps tools\navigator.exe” -> Click Ok.

This command will open the Leadtek Navigator application. The Navigator
application is a basic graphical interface to the internally integrated Leadtek GPS
module. This application provides position lock status (3D); COM Port used,
Baud Rate, Coordinate Data, and Satellite Signal to Noise Ratio information. In
addition, this application includes a default setting restore function and hardware
reset.

Once connected, the Tracking View will display satellites in range based on
location and the signal view will display the satellite signal strength. Signal
strength levels are sufficient for navigation when indicated in green.

Note: Four valid satellite locks are necessary for a 3D position fix. The Position
Fix indicator is located between the Speed and Direction dials and will be green
to indicate a position fix.

Module 6: Recovery Partition
The purpose of the Recovery Partition module is to provide the user with detailed
information on using the Recovery Partition. Upon completion of this module the
user will be able to demonstrate the ability to reload the hard drive

Files can become corrupted due to improper shutdowns, virus infections, or
improper loading or setup of software applications. When this occurs, it becomes
necessary to restore or reload the hard drive from the Recovery Partition. This
utility is provided as means to restore the hard disk (Drive C) to its original factory
image. Caution: This utility will overwrite the current contents of the hard drive.

Hard Disk Recovery Procedure
1. Click Start, Programs, Mobile Computer Tools
2. Select “Hard Disk Recovery”
3. A dialog box will appear which states:
        This command will restart your computer and boot into the Recovery Partition (Drive E:).
        Continue?

From this point, you can choose to go to a MS-DOS command prompt or restore
Drive C: of your hard disk to its original factory image.

4. Click “Yes”. The computer will shutdown and reboot to the Recovery Partition
   Menu.

5. Type “1” to restore the hard drive disk image.

6. Type “2” if you want to return to Windows and do NOT wish to restore the
   factory disk image. Type Windows and the computer will reboot and return to
   Windows.

7. To continue the recovery process, a warning will appear in the center of the
   screen. Type “Y” to continue.

8. The question will appear: “Are you sure? [Y,N]?” Type “Y” to continue.

9. The question will appear: “Check the disk for errors [Y,N]?”                   Type “Y” to
   continue.

This process will take about 50 – 60 minutes depending on the contents of the
recovery partition.

Module 7: Computer Maintenance
The purpose of the Computer Maintenance module is to provide the user with
maintenance information for the Hardcase Rugged computer. Upon completion
of this training module, the user will be able to properly clean and maintain the
GoBook III.

Maintaining Your Computer
Follow these guidelines to help maintain the condition and performance of your
computer:

•   Turn off the computer when you are not using it.
•   Charge the batteries daily or whenever their capacity is low.
•   Operate the computer within the recommended temperature range of -10°F to
    +140°F (-23°C to +60°C).
Note: Boot-up temperatures will differ from operating depending on whether or
not the optional Hard Disk Drive heater has been fitted. (-10°F (-23° C) w/ heater,
32°F (60° C) w/o heater)


Care and Cleaning

Physical Inspection: Periodically, inspect the computer and accessories for
wear, damage, and loose or missing parts. Identifying and correcting potential
problems early can help reduce the need to return the unit for service.

Outside Case: Like all tools, the outside of the computer will get dirty with use.
The case is made of painted magnesium and polycarbonate blend (plastic) doors
and covers. These areas can be cleaned with a solution of one part Formula 409
PRO  and one part water. Follow the procedure below.

To clean the outside case
1. Turn off the computer and disconnect external power.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Using a soft, dry cloth (do not use paper products because they can scratch
    the surface), add a small amount of cleaning solution to the cloth and clean
    the computer case.
4. Wipe off any excess liquid with a soft cloth.
5. Reinstall the battery.

Display

Periodically inspect the display to make sure the contrast and brightness
functions are operating properly. To clean the display, use either an Ergo -
supplied display cleaning cloth or for tougher cleaning jobs apply a solution of
one part Formula 409 PRO and one part water to a clean, dry, soft cloth and
then wipe the screen. Do not use paper-based products as they can scratch the
display. The supplied cleaning cloth should be used to clean fingerprints and
smudges from the display.

External Power Connector

The external power connector may sometimes be exposed to moisture and/or
contamination causing an unreliable connection to the external power source.
Clean this connector using a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

RJ-11 Connector

Make sure this connector is operating properly. During use, the connector pins
can get dirty, become broken, bent or pushed out of place. Clean the connector
with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.


Keyboard

Check all keys to make sure they are working properly. To clean the keyboard,
use a solution of mild detergent and water, applied to a clean, soft cloth.


PC Card Connector

Make sure the PC Card connector is operating correctly by reading from or
writing to a PC Card.


Battery

If moisture condenses on the battery and battery connectors, remove it by using
a clean, dry cloth. The connectors may corrode if they are exposed to moisture
for extended periods. Corrosion can be removed with a cotton swab dipped in
isopropyl alcohol.

Battery Storage and Care

To maintain performance of the Lithium-Ion battery:

•    The battery will last longer during the day if it is used and charged between
     59°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C).
•    Turn off the computer manually when not in use.
•    Ensure that the system suspends automatically.             PC Cards, custom
     applications or modified system settings can effect this.
•    Turn down the Backlight when it is not needed.
•    Turn off volume and sounds for events where they are not needed.
•    Avoid exposing batteries to extremely hot or cold temperatures for long
     periods.
•    Charge the battery nightly where the temperature will remain constant at
     approximately 70°F (21°C).
•    Store batteries within the temperature range of 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C).
•    If the computer will be stored for more than 5 days, backup files and data,
     fully charge the battery then remove the battery. Store the computer and
     battery in a dry place.

Software
• The unit should be soft booted once a day to prevent possible windows
  errors.
• Scandisk or Check Disk should be run once every two weeks as outlined in
  the troubleshooting section.
Safety Issues
1.      Do not operate the computer while the vehicle is in motion.

2.      Secure the computer in the vehicle cradle whenever the vehicle is in
        motion. If a vehicle cradle has not been installed, the computer can be
        secured via the seat belt in the passenger section of the vehicle.

3.      Improper disposal of a battery can cause serious personal injury. Do not
        crush the battery or place it in a fire. The battery is recyclable and, under
        various state and local laws, it may be illegal to dispose of it into the
        municipal waste system. Check with local solid-waste officials for details
        on recycling options or proper disposal.

4.     Do not stick anything into the openings on the GoBook III. There are
       potentially dangerous voltages inside the computer.

5.     Always use appropriate procedures when connecting the Hardcase
       Rugged to external power. Failure to do so could cause a spark.

Module 8: Optional Peripherals
This module contains information on optional peripherals for the GoBook III.

Vehicle Cradle
The vehicle cradle is a docking station designed to safely secure the computer in
the vehicle. The cradle is hardwired into the vehicle and provides power that
enables the computer’s battery to charge while in the vehicle cradle when the
vehicle engine is running.

The cradle, when mounted on a
pedestal, can be adjusted for
easier viewing of the computer by
swiveling it from side to side.




How to place the computer into
the vehicle cradle

Push up on the bottom of the
release lever and pull the lever
away from the cradle. Place the Hardcase Rugged onto the cradle so that the
front indicator LED’s are towards the release lever. Push the release lever into
the unit until it latches. The contacts on the base of the cradle mate with the 8-
Pin connector on the bottom of the unit. Once the computer is properly seated in
the cradle, it can be secured with the key lock.

How to remove the computer from the vehicle cradle

To remove the PC from the cradle, push up on the bottom of the release lever,
pull back on the release lever and lift up the unit.


External Antenna
The vehicle cradle can also provide a connection to an external antenna installed
on the vehicle. The cradle and Hardcase Rugged must each be RF-equipped to
support this feature and must be used together.

Vehicle adapter
If a vehicle cradle is not yet installed, or won't be used, a vehicle adapter, or DC
adapter, which plugs into a cigarette lighter jack, will be issued to supply power to
the unit. If utilizing the DC adapter as a power source, one issue to keep in mind
is whether or not the jack is “hot”. If the jack is hot or continuously receiving
power from the vehicles battery, the adapter can remain plugged in at all times.
In some cases, the jack may be switched on and off with ignition. If that is the
case, the DC adapter should be removed from the jack prior to starting the
vehicle. Failure to do so could result in blowing a fuse on the DC adapter.
To ensure uninterrupted power, the unit should be plugged into an external
power source whenever possible.

Module 10: Advanced Settings
The purpose of the Advanced Settings module is to provide support-level users
with information on the Hardcase Rugged CMOS settings using the System
Setup Utility. This module contains default and optional settings.

The System Set-up Utility

The System Setup Utility is accessible only during the boot sequence of the
GoBook III. To enter the Setup utility, turn on or reboot the computer. Shortly
after the computer restarts, text at the bottom of the Logo screen will indicate
“Press DEL to enter Setup. Press TAB to show POST information”. Press the
Del key when you see the prompt. After several seconds, the following screen
will be displayed. Select “CMOS Setup Menu” and press Enter.




**Note: The touch screen will not be active at this time, as the touch screen
drivers are not installed until the operating system is loaded.

The first screen is directional and will always be displayed when entering the
setup utility. The settings must be changed further down into the menu structure.
CMOS password settings effect this option. If a user or supervisor password has
been previously entered, you will be asked for a password when this option is
selected.

Stealth Mode Configuration

Stealth mode is a feature that allows the GoBook III to be used in an environment
where sound and light could be dangerous to the users, such as a military user. If
Stealth mode is disabled, the LEDs, fan, system beeps, audio, and display
brightness operate normally.

The Boot Menu

Battery Calibration

The CMOS password settings have no effect on this option. When this option is
selected, you will be presented with battery calibration information and the option
to calibrate the batteries. When a battery no longer attains 70% (4200 mAh for a
6000 mAh battery) of its rated capacity it should be replaced.




Primary Battery
The Primary battery is the main battery for the unit and located on the bottom of
the unit. The date and capacity shown on this line is the date and capacity
recorded during the last calibration for this battery. The information is recorded
in the battery and will stay with the battery until the next calibration. If no date or
capacity is displayed it is possible that the battery has not previously been
calibrated.

Secondary Battery
The secondary battery is the optional battery for the unit and located in the media
bay. The date and capacity shown on this line is the date and capacity recorded
during the last calibration for this battery. The information is recorded in the
battery and will stay with the battery until the next calibration. If no date or
capacity is displayed it is possible that the battery was calibrated on a unit with a
battery that has not been calibrated.

EXIT

This option will reboot the machine. To return to the previous screen you will
need to enter the CMOS setup again.


KeyBoard BackLight Control
The CMOS password settings have no effect on this option. When this option is
selected, you will be presented with the ability to change the operational timer for
the Backlit keyboard option. Caution should be used when setting the
operational timer. Like a light bulb, the Backlit keyboard panel has a usable life.
Setting the operational timer to longer run times could reduce usable life of the
backlit keyboard.
