Cold War
Communism
Capitalism
Super power
               The Cold War
• The Cold War was a battle between the USA and the
  USSR
• It was a battle of ideas- between Capitalism and
  Communism
• It was a struggle to see who would be the best and
  most powerful
• It was a war where they never actually came to blows
but fought through spying, arms race, space race,
spreading their political views to make them more
  powerful
• They also fought each other indirectly by helping
other capitalists or communists to fight each other.
Vietnam
                 Conflict in Vietnam
• Conflict for nearly 30 years
• Why was Vietnam so important
that the world’s major powers get
    involved in a war?
• Battle ground of the cold war- in
many ways it was part of the battle
to decide who would be the most
powerful- the Americans saw it as
    the domino theory
• Conflict that changed in many ways
    the nature of warfare- chemical
warfare and its use on enemy and
    civilian population
• Nature of warfare- guerrilla war
    fare
• Vietnamese struggle and
    movements for freedom- civil war
• America lost- embarrassment for
    leading nation- lasting legacy
    (psychological) on the USA.
                Your task
• In pairs your going to start some initial
research into Vietnam and the origins of
the conflict by creating yourself a profile.
• This will need to be completed by the end
  of the lesson
• It can be presented in any form- ppt,
poster, written into your book, Word,
  answers to Questions etc
• All Computer work must be printed off
before the next lesson and stuck into
books for when they are handed in. NO
  EXCUSES!!!!
What should your profile include?
• Clear map of Vietnam
• Brief history up to 1945 (3 lines)
• Information about Vietnam in WW2- Japanese
  invasion
• Why was Vietnam so important (natural
  resources etc)
• France’s role in Vietnam- owned them before
the war and wanted to again rule them after
the Second World War from Japan
• How did Vietnam react to these two (Japan and
France) countries control over them? – what did
  they do? Movements, leaders?
