Essex Vicinage Offers Electronic Filing for Special Civil Cases
In September of 2007 the Superior Court of New Jersey- Essex Vicinage, Special Civil
Part will begin using the imaging component of the Judiciary Electronic Filing &
Imaging System (JEFIS) in DC docket type cases, which are cases in which the demand
amount does not exceed $15,000. JEFIS is a “paperless” system in which cases can be
filed, processed, adjudicated and recorded entirely without paper.
Attorneys using JEFIS file cases electronically. The images of the documents are stored
in electronic case jackets and transmitted electronically directly to the Court. Orders and
other documents are returned via JEFIS as well.
“We are very pleased to be able to offer JEFIS to attorneys in our vicinage,” said
Assignment Judge Patricia K. Costello. “Once they are on-board, attorneys will find this
service a convenient and cost-effective way of doing business with the courts.”
JEFIS began as a pilot program in Monmouth County in 1999. The Judiciary
implemented the electronic filing component of JEFIS statewide in 2000 and began
expanding the imaging component statewide in 2003, with full implementation scheduled
to be completed this summer. JEFIS offers many advantages, including reduced data
entry, reduction of errors, ease of filing, cost savings and the safe storage of documents.
In 2006, there were more than 275,000 special civil cases filed statewide; 42 percent of
those were filed electronically.
