It was terrific to have some much needed rain in the region though!! The organisations and volunteers who participated on the day are to be congratulated for their effort to create interactive and welcoming sites for the community and for braving the weather to still promote the vast array of sport and recreation opportunities to the community. A number of organisations have reported positive leads and interest developed from the day itself. Other successful outcomes include: • The Bendigo Bank Lakeside Fun Run which attracted over 1,400 participants in it’s introductory year. It was fantastic to see families, friends, work mates and people of all ages and abilities taking part together. The event was a great success raising over $7,000 towards Bendigo Health. The Sports Clinic attracted record entries this year with categories for males aged 5 -16, females aged 5-16, and adults and people with disabilities groups on offer. A new cycling and duathlon clinic was conducted at the Tom Flood Sports Centre for anyone aged 7 years or over. The new sports artworks workshops conducted on the deck of the Boardwalk Restaurant attracted many participants throughout the day. There were over 100 sites participate in the day We are currently assessing applications received from ParticipACTION Day for six sports in the newly introduced Sports Scholarship program. The successful recipients will be announced during December. • • • • Although the weather hampered the actual day the organisation’s involved have benefited from a comprehensive marketing campaign in the lead up to the day through the A2 ParticipACTION Day poster and 4 page supplement in The Advertiser and Bendigo Miner, the poster distribution to every primary school child in the City of Greater Bendigo, various stories in The Advertiser and Bendigo Weekly and the commercials on Southern Cross Ten, 3BO and Star FM. 8 14 Nolan Street, Bendigo 3550 · admin@sportsfocus.com.au Ph: 5442 3101 · Fax: 5442 3878 · www.sportsfocus.com.au ‘Sport & Recreation for All’ Sports Focus have already commenced plans for 2008 and look forward to working with existing and new sport and recreation organisations at next year’s event and future Sports Focus initiatives and programs. The ICN provides a chance for coaches to come together to discuss their involvement, share experiences, offer support and suggestions for common issues and identify opportunities for training. Coaches representing a range of sports and activities have shown early interest and include: baseball, basketball, cricket, YMCA, netball, Aussie rules, soccer, swimming, athletics. Coaches and community leaders interested in attending a meeting or finding out more information about including people with a disability in sport can contact Karen Larkins, Project Coordinator, Sports Focus, ph: 5442 3101 or email karenl@sportsfocus.com.au INCLUSIVE COACHING COURSE A total of ten coaches received training at the 3 hour workshop in Woodend on 31st October 2007. The interactive workshop explored a range of inclusive ideas, strategies and simple techniques to enhance the coaches’ knowledge on how to better include people with a disability in sport and physical activity. Feedback from the workshop has been very positive with many indicating an increased level of confidence to encourage and promote the inclusion of people with a disability in their club setting. Sports Focus is waiting to hear back from the local clubs in the Macedon Ranges to determine what level of interest exists to introduce ActivAAAte or Be AAActive in the region. BE AAActive People with a disability living in Bendigo have been able to choose from six sporting activities during Term 4. Local sports clubs have continued their commitment to be inclusive by conducting training programs in the sports of basketball, baseball, athletics, tennis, cricket and the YMCA’s Healthy and Active Classes. Parents and carers welcome the opportunity for their family member with a disability or client to have something active to look forward to in the community. Participants are learning a range of sporting skills and developing their social skills in new environments. The 2008 Term 1 program is currently being prepared and should be available prior to the end of this year. INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY 3RD December 2007 Sports Focus participated in this community event which was organised by Peter Harcourt Disability Services to celebrate IDPWD on 3rd December 2007. A variety of sporting, art and recreational activities were offered for people to try as a way of celebrating healthy living in our community. Sports Focus would like to acknowledge the work undertaken by the YMCA Harriers Athletics Club, Scots Baseball Club and Nigel May’s Martial Arts School to promote Be AAActive on the day. The aim of the day was to promote Be AAActive by supporting people with a disability to experience participating in physical activity at a major community celebration event and encourage involvement on a regular basis: 3 key objectives of International Day for People with a Disability are: • To raise awareness of the skills of people with disability • To bring the community together • To celebrate the achievements of people with disability 14 Nolan Street, Bendigo 3550 · admin@sportsfocus.com.au Ph: 5442 3101 · Fax: 5442 3878 · www.sportsfocus.com.au 10 All sport and recreation clubs need to ensure that they are inclusive and provide all members of the community with the opportunity to participate. The many positive outcomes of welcoming and including people with a disability benefit the organisation, the individual with the disability, other club members and the wider community. BENEFITS FOR YOUR CLUB: • • • • • Financial benefits as extra money comes from new members. It also opens new doors for funding and support as grants are often available to assist with new programs, training of coaches and personnel and redevelopment of facilities; Social benefits—new friendships will develop, prejudices disappear and members feel more valued as they contribute to the club in a new way; Reinvigoration of a club with ‘new blood’; A new pool of volunteers; A new level of elite competition; Organisations may also find that by improving access for people with a disability they may inadvertently encourage other groups to join, such as older adults, parents with small children or non-English speaking adults. Addressing physical access issues such as clearer signage might make it easier for everyone using the club’s building. An attitudinal change within the existing membership of the club may be seen as ‘peoplefriendly’ and membership may increase as other’s join your welcoming club. BENEFITS TO THE INDIVIDUAL WITH A DISABILITY: • • • • • • Increase their confidence and self-esteem; Improve their physical and emotional health and well-being; Experience freedom of choice and increased personal control of their lives; Become active members of the club and the community; Enjoy the same life experiences as others in the community; Be challenged, have fun and learn new skills; Contact Sports Focus on 5442 3101 for further assistance in making your club more welcoming and inclusive. ‘Sport & Recreation for All’ Ros Comer—Community Member in Profile Ros Comer has accomplished quite a lot in her life, with her most passionate achievement being assisting people with a disability to become involved in the sport of netball. Ros’s interest in netball first came about when she played with the Tooborac netball club. She then undertook coaching of school teams who played in the Golden City Netball Association. Twenty years ago, Ros decided that there was an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in the sport of netball. Despite being told by a number of community members that establishing a netball competition for people with a disability could not be done, through hard work, dedication and persistence Roz established a girls netball team that was inclusive of people with a disability which participated in the mid-week competition at the West Bendigo Courts. This team also competed in state competitions with a number of players earning state selection. Participation by people with a disability in the sport of netball has continued to grow since Ros established the netball competition twenty years ago with local sides continuing to travel to Melbourne to participate at the State Titles. Ros commented, ‘players that have participated in netball have found a greater confidence in themselves, instead of sitting inside on weekends watching television, they are out there participating in physical activity’. Ros’ dedication to having people with a disability participate in netball has been recognised with an award presented to her by Netball Victoria. With volunteers like Ros Comer in the community, it ensures that there recreation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. are inclusive sport and Sections of this article appeared in the Bendigo Weekly on Friday 5th October. The Board of Management and Staff of Sports Focus would like to wish you all a very happy festive season. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support during 2007, and look forward to your continued involvement with Sports Focus in 2008. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. 12 14 Nolan Street, Bendigo 3550 · admin@sportsfocus.com.au Ph: 5442 3101 · Fax: 5442 3878 · www.sportsfocus.com.au
