UNIVERSITY OF ROME TOR VERGATA CONFERENCE The Director of the JMCE presented a paper on EU enlargement at the international conference “Assessing the EU’s Role in the World”, which took place in Rome, 7-10 July 2008. It was co-organized by the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the Center for American Studies, and the Brookings Institution. This was a Jean Monnet activity and the organizer was Prof. Federiga Bindi. MULTICULTURISM, EDUCATION AND INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE On August 12, 2008, in cooperation with local authorities and nongovernmental organizations, the JMCE, in the framework of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue – 2008, organized two interrelated events demonstrating openness to the civil society:
• Open discussion on education: what keeps us apart, what keeps us together? • Music concert: dialectic music, songs and poetry
Both events were aimed at involving the civil society in a public debate and reflection on “Multiculturism, Education and Intercultural Dialogue”. The open discussion was based on issues addressed in the recently published book The Educational Challenges of Multiculturism, edited by Joseph Joseph and Yiannos Socratous (Athens Papazissis, 2008). PLATRES WORKSHOP ON EUROPEAN VALUES, MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT FOR DIFFERENCE
During August 14 – 21, 2008, in cooperation with the Peace Council and the Sociopolitical Studies Institute (IKME) (nongovernmental organizations), the JMCE co-organized a conflict resolution workshop in Platres entitled “Empowering Youth in Adopting the European Values of Mutual Understanding and Respect for Difference.” It aimed at developing a culture of peace among students from Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. The participants were forty students from Cyprus, Greece and Turkey: 20 from Cyprus (10 Greek Cypriots and 10 Turkish Cypriots), 10 from Greece, and 10 from Turkey. In pictures

TOCHNI SEMINAR ON EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, CONFLICT AND IDENTITY
On 26 August 26, 2008, in cooperation with the University of Washington (Seattle) and the American University in Cairo the JMCE organized a seminar, on the European Union and the triangle of Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. The seminar was held in the framework of the Exploration Seminar on Arab and American Identities in Tension and Cooperation, Tochni, Cyprus, 18-29 August 2008. In pictures
