Mary Queen of Peace School Newsletter June 11, 2009 the option of mixing and matching from a variety of half-day camps in art, science, engineering, music, computers, biology, storytelling, travel (through exploring cultures), life skills and much more. Camps will be held at the Centre Scolaire et Communautaire, Ridge Road). Half-day camps (morning or afternoon) cost $89 per week and full-day camps cost $145 per week. The full week fee includes lunch supervision. Note: Participants must supply their own lunch.) Registration is easy! Call :737-7979. Please register early. Camps fill quickly! Early Closure – June 25 Students will be dismissed @ 1:00 pm. on Thursday, June 25. Buses will be making their regular run at this time. Please note that there will not be any classes for the afternoon kindergarten students on June 25. Their last day of classes will be June 24. Friday, June 26, is an administrative day and therefore it will be a regular day for the teaching and administrative staff. Recycling Prize Draws On June the 25 we will host a primary and an elementary assembly. At the assemblies we will hold our recycling prize draws. Students who participated in our Thursday Blitzes, Saturday Contests or had credits deposited in Mary Queen of Peace’s account at Evergreen Recycling will have their names entered for the prize draws. We have a wide range of prizes, from major items to trinket-like toys that often appeal to students of all ages. The Environment Committee would like to thank Bulldog Gym for their donation of 10 visit passes (a value of about $80) and Toys R Us for giving the last sale price on everything purchased ($200+ saving over regular cost of items). Thank you to Terry Stirling (mother of former student, Sarah) and Natalie Vanasse (mother of Jonathan Babin) for purchasing prizes for the draw on behalf of the committee. Another Great .Concert The Band Concert, featuring our Beginning and Senior Bands and Grade One Choir was held on June 8. Congratulations to Ms. Louise Collins, Band Teacher, Ms. Ange Dawe, Choral Director and our bands and Grade One Choir on their wonderful performance. Lost & Found Area Overflowing The Lost and Found area is overflowing again. Please remind your child to check for misplaced articles by Thursday, June 25. Unclaimed items will be sent to a local charity on June 26. Students Transferring Out Summer French Camps Northeast Avalon Chapter, Canadian Parents for French, is co-sponsoring a selection of French Camps from June 29 - August 28, 2009 for ages 5 - 8 and 9 - 12. Parents have Please inform the school, as soon as possible, if your child(ren) will not be returning to MQP in September 2009. Several parents have inquired about transferring their children to our school. We need an accurate projection of our numbers for next year before making decisions with regards to these transfer requests. Relaxed Student Dress Code Some parents and students have inquired as to whether or not we would follow the past practice of relaxing the dress code for the last few weeks of classes. As of June 8, students are no longer expected to dress in navy and white. Casual clothing may be more suitable for the anticipated warm weather and when participating in upcoming field trips, class outings and fun day activities. Sparks, Brownie & Guide Registration Registration for District XIII Sparks, Brownies and Guides for the 2009-2010 school year will take place Monday, June 15 from 6:30 pm. - 8:00 pm. in the gym of Virginia Park School. Learning Disabilities Association: Camp Enrichment / Summer Reading Programs The learning Disabilities Association is offering Camp Enrichment, a fun educational experience for a child/ren with a learning disability, ADHD or experiencing difficulties at school. The trained staff will plan for and attend to the unique strengths and needs of the children. The activities are designed to challenge children outside the classroom in a fun-filled and educational environment, to increase self-confidence, and to help develop skills that children need to succeed outside the camp setting. Highlights of the weekly camps: run from June 29- Aug. 7; 8:30 am. – 4:30 pm. Monday-Friday; late pickup option; low camper/staff ratio; themed weeks, innovative special projects and field trips; cost - $100.00 per week. Optional: one-on-one reading tutoring at an additional cost of $10.00 per week. Space is limited. The association will also offer Reading Tutoring Programs, (4 or 8 weeks durations), from July 6-August 24. Children and Internet Safety Are your children Blogging, Twittering, FaceBooking and chatting with friends on MSN? Come learn about, and discuss, computer safety, online risks and more. A session, of interest to parents, children, grandparents, teachers and anyone who has children or teenagers using the Internet, takes place Thursday, June 11, from 7 pm. – 9 pm. @ MacDonald Drive Elementary.
