AGENDA


1)   Call to Order- Buddy list check
2)   Additions to and adoption of agenda – moved by Grant, seconded by Jacki
3)   Adoption of February minutes – moved by Jacki, seconded by Luc
4)   Business arising from February minutes - none
5)   New Business:
     a) Healthy Schools - Laura Morrison
         PowerPoint slides handed out – for information
         Community Based Activities - $5000.00 plus $1.00 per student
         Targeted Provincial Campaigns – can submit ideas to Manitoba Healthy
             Schools for initiatives under any of the four campaign topics
         Healthy Schools job is to empower schools to evaluate progress in due to
             participation in campaigns
         School divisions can apply on behalf of schools who have not applied, but
    must need buy in from school and their contact
   Healthy Schools eNEWS – encourage librarians, classroom teachers to
    subscribe
   Healthy Living Challenge – teacher kits are still available, remind your grade
    3 and 4 teachers than an evaluation is forthcoming (online as well)
   In Motion – Schools have one opportunity each year (spring) to apply to be a
    level 2 school (reaching level two means you are providing an opportunity to
    every student to be active 30 min./day
   Some schools are inundated with too many initiatives
        - Can they be spread out throughout the school year?
       - Can they be meshed together?


b) ASH P.L.A.N. (Planning Alternative Tomorrows for Hope) - Paul Paquin
ASH is reviewing their mandate and is asking for our input:
 Should ASH be more of a leadership group in comprehensive school health
 ASH wants a more direct link in school system – through our group or as a
   similar parallel group
 ASH wants to support schools in a more positive fashion
MPESA Responses:
 All agencies should have a curriculum walk through so they can develop
  support resources connected to the curriculum to help deliver outcomes
 Lets get teachers teaching health first then work on comprehensive school
  health
 Keep in partnership with ASH


c) LTAD – Derek
 What is happening in divisions with the model?
    - RETSD is working towards being in line with the model
 Group Comments – LTAD is in primitive stages, sports organizations are
  working towards the model, perpetuates teaching the sport model of teaching
  curric. with its packages, how do BMS fit into the LTAD model, curric.
  should impact the LTAD model, want community sports to match the LTDA
  model
 Greg Gunther can come to Portage meeting to speak
d) Career Nite        - Henry
 U of M Career Nite was successful
   - 4 speakers which all addressed what students can do to be more employable
   - Attendance about 75 with students from all faculties (low number of PE
   students)
 U of W had a similar Nite (Faralee)
   - about 40 students
   - low numbers of PE students
 Faralee suggested that MPETA and MPESA together sponsor a Career Nite
   targeting PE students – MPETA to take the lead on it (well supported by
   others)


e) Heelys – Bev
 Wanted to know if school divisions have policies surrounding heelys
    - no policies out there, just common sense practice approach following
    along the same lines as skateboards, bikes, inline skates


f) Flag Football – Ron
 Reebok Flag Football is not doing school programs anymore, but will still
   provide the kits to schools – they want to go through the community clubs


g) Recruiting – Derek
 Handout – immediate implementation of these guidelines


h) PE/HE Steering Committee – Nick
 Shared feedback from the steering committee with MPESA group and asked
    for additional feedback to take to back to them


i) MHSAA – Michelle
 Superintendents want to meet with urban PE/HE consultants/supervisors
    regards financial implications of MHSAA decisions and processes


j) Eligibility – Nancy
 Asking for feedback on grade 9 eligibility, more specifically grade 9 repeat
     students in a 7-9 school
  - four years of eligibility once they begin grade 9
        - can play for a grade 9 team once because of age requirements


      k) Healthy Schools Coordinator – a possible associate MPESA member
        - Derek will contact Laura
      l) University of Manitoba New Dean – Henry
         - Dr. Jane Watkinson – to start July 1, 2007 (Grad of U of Michigan)
      m) Nutrition Policy Info Request – Greg
       - email Sandee Deck if you can provide their division with some insight into
       developing a divisional nutrition policy


6) Reports
   a) Treasurer- Donna
       not submitted


   b) MPETA- Jacki
       Report handed out
       MPETA to work more in the HE area
       Laura to be invited to be on MPETA board
       Healthy Schools page in newsletter and journal
       Announce HE initiatives winners in journal
       SAG – pre SAG HE topics every second year, with HE stream in sessions
      selections in opposite years
       Add health to our name and mission
       Faralee went over the new format for the TOBA award (new winners system –
      no banner, decals instead)


   c) CAHPERD- Grant/Heather
       Contact Heather if interested in an application for CAHPERD president
       Application for student leadership camps – sent to universities already
       Handed in award of excellence feedback forms (Grant will email them out again
      for online submission)
       Press release – Federal budget falls short was circulated
       May need to talk to our MP’s – CAHPERD will provide the speech
       Conference – IT difficulties, but will be online by Friday, March 23, Grant to
      check in to extension of registration deadline as a result
       AHPERD – new president Mr. John Bennet from North Carolina
d) MECY- Heather/Paul
    Report handed out
    Scheduling document went to PAC’s, Principals, Superintendents, but not to PE
   teachers (handed out to all MPESA members today)
