The Eastern School District advises parents/guardians of the Eastern Region that registration for the 2009-2010 English and French Immersion Kinderstart Program (Kindergartens 2010) will take place on May 26 & 27. Registration will take place between 8:30 am. - 3:30 pm. both days. Children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2010 in order to register. Your child’s MCP card and a document providing proof of address must be presented at the time of registration. For information on accessible K12 facilities, or other inquiries, please visit the District website at www.esdnl.ca or call District Office at 758-2372.
New Playground Structure
The Environment Committee plans to invest all monies raised from recycling for environmental projects. The long term plan is to extensively upgrade the outside play areas for the students. The first project will be the purchase and installation of an additional play structure which will cost approximately $10 000.00. It is the hope that this project will be completed by September, 2009. Long term projects include the reinstallation of basketball nets, reorganization of the primary field, construction of an outdoor teaching area, and student garden / seating area. This long term plan has the support of our School Council. Everyone can help the committee meet its goals by simply participating in our Thursday Recycling Blitzes or the Contest on May 30.
Spring..Concert
The Spring Concert will take place in the gym of MQP at 7:00 pm. Tuesday, June 2. The following groups will perform: Primary Choir, Elementary Choir, Grade Four Recorder Group and Grade Five Recorder Group. Tickets for the concert will be on sale from Thursday, May 28 until Tuesday, June 2, at a cost of $5.00 each. Due to space limitations and fire regulations, we must limit the number of tickets sold to two per family. Two tickets will be reserved per family until 3:00 pm. Tuesday, June 2. To purchase tickets send your money to your child’s teacher in an envelope marked concert and your tickets will be forwarded home. Please note: The Grade Five and Six Bands and our grade One Choir will perform in a concert on June 8. The Grade Six Recorder Group will perform at the Grade 6 School Leaving Ceremonies on June 22.
School..Grounds..Clean..Up
The MQP Environmental Committee is sponsoring a school grounds clean up between 9:00 am. – 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 30 during our Recycling Contest. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated. If you have a broom, shovel or weeding tools, could you please bring them with you? We will serve hot dogs and drinks to everyone who participates in the clean up. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, May 30.

Contest 2008-09
The last Recycling Contest of the year will take place Saturday, May 30 between 9:00 am. and noon. All donations are greatly appreciated. Please note that you do not need to count your items for students to be entered in the random prize draws. However, items must be counted if students wish to be eligible to win the prize for highest donation per grade level. Spring Safety Newsletter
A Spring Safety newsletter will go home this week. The newsletter, compiled by several community agencies, contains a 15-minute checklist to help one evaluate his/ her family’s readiness for five different spring and summer activities. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, babysitter or caregiver, a little preparation can make a difference between an adventure or catastrophe.

Kids@MUN Summer Youth Camps will take place June 29 - August 28 for youth ages 5-8 and 9-12. A selection of French camps will be available for both age groups. St.John's Clean and Beautiful along with the City's Parks Division hosts Arbor Day annually. This year they will be planting a tree around Kenny's Pond, on Tuesday, June 9. Three of our grade 2 classes have been invited to attend and assist with the planting ceremony.
The next PTA sponsored Ice Cream Sale will take place Friday, May 29. Ice cream (fudgesicles) can be purchased for $0.50.
Mary Queen of Peace Fun Days
Primary Fun Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 (backup day – Wednesday, June 17). Elementary Fun Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 (backup day – Friday, June 19). The Kindergarten Fun Day is scheduled for June 15, rain or shine. Additional information will follow. Grade 3 and Grade 6 CRT’S The grade three and grade six students will be completing math and language arts CRT’s from June 2-12. Please make every effort to have your child (ren) in attendance, and on time for classes, during this time period.
Children's Reading Connection
Children's Reading Connection is now accepting registration for its Summer Reading and Writing Program. Classes will take place at Rennies River Elementary School on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from July 7 until August 6. Reading and writing improvement and enrichment classes will be offered. Literacy Week at MQP During Literacy Week, May 11-15, the students at Mary Queen of Peace participated in some exciting activities.
Mayor Dennis O’Keefe and Councillor Shannie Duff read to the students on Monday. Students made Book Badges illustrating a visual representation of a book character, scene, or event etc. Everyone was involved in the Guess-a-Story Project. During this activity teachers selected familiar stories and placed the names of the books, or the books, in a bag. The students were asked to guess the book titles based on the clues provided. On Thursday everyone participated in writing Shared Stories - one created by the English stream and the other one created by the French stream. As the story was being written, it circulated from class to class. Each class read the previous sentence(s), then added their own before passing it on to the next class. Both stories were beautifully written. They were read to the whole student body via the PA. Friday concluded with a school-wide Literacy Fair featuring an array of diverse projects truly illustrating the

The PTA needs Grade 6 parent volunteers to help with setting up for the Grade 6 School Leaving Celebrations on the evening of Sunday, June 21.
