Groupwise Update
We have upgraded our Groupwise installation to GW8. While the update went pretty smoothly, there have been a few glitches. Some have complained of GW8 not autofilling name recognition. We have been able to fix that issue with a reinstall of the groupwise client. Of larger concern has been the fact that Groupwise Server has abended (crashed) a number of times since the upgrade and we are looking for the software glitch that is causing the problem. The update does have some positive features however. In Web Access, you can control click and shift click individual or sequential message to move, delete, etc. You can also right click messages to bring up a menu to work them.
Ed Tech Cadre Sally Gregory is the proud winner of the Optiplex 280 computer and monitor that we gave away at the last Ed Tech on May 20th. We will be posting all the projects done by participants at our Ed Tech website which you can visit to see more about what we covered this year. Check out
the projects that our participants created. There is a link to the projects from the Ed Tech welcome page.
There are a few new features as well in the new client for GW8. If you want to update your client, you can do so by going to this address. Just click We hope to continue the Run and Run again and wait while the project next year, but with the update is finishing. It does take a retirement of Mark Freeman from while and you do need to close Baker, it may take a different form Groupwise before you run the update. next year. (Continued on page 2)
NEW FILE SERVER WITH TWO TERABYTES OF DISK SPACE Earlier this year we had purchased moving away from Netware, the old a new file server to replace the standard. As a result, this migration was LHS6300, which is the file server used a bit difficult for us as we had to wait by LHS, LMS, Central and the District for Novell to support AFP (Apple File Office. This new server is a bit Protocol) so that we can support our different as it is running a new version Macs and be able to migrate the of the Linux Operating system, which student files as well to the new server. is what Novell is moving to, and After school is out, (continued on page 2)

NEW LABS AT SCHOOLS This past year we added several new computer labs in the district. Greenwood School was able to add a lab of 32 off-lease Dell computers. This greatly enhances the school’s ability to conduct state testing, teach keyboarding skills, and provide classes with the ability to teach research and computer skills to Greenwood students. Central Elementary School’s PTO has just donated money to provide a similar lab to Central students. We will be ordering the computers now and have that all set up and ready to use for next fall. Island City PTO has donated funding to add to ICE’s media center, helping to provide enough computers for a full classroom, as well as to replace some very aging Macintosh G3’s. The LHS PTO has also just contributed funding to upgrade the Tiger Cage Lab at LHS to off-lease Optiplex 280’s. These are replacing our oldest Pentium computers that are at least 10 years old. WE had been using them with a terminal server, so they had been pretty functional for the Internet and RECYCLING PROJECT computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, televisons, etc. We collaborated with UMESD and all the local school districts, including Baker Schools to help recycle all this e-waste.

Office Applications, but were limited for other software applications and multimedia. The Tiger Cage already has LCD monitors, so just the CPU’s had to be replaced.
A few times when we did this update, we encountered problems, so let us know if you have any issues. We had done a great job deleting old email, and recovered a significant amount of disk space on our email server, but it is still important for all users to clean out your mail boxes of unnecessary email as well as your sent messages. When we purchase a new email server, we will add disk space and backup capacity, but in the meantime, it is important to keep the size of our mailboxes to a reasonable amount. It is also possible to archive messages from Groupwise to the file server. Call or email if you are interested in learning more.
We will work with UMESD to follow up with this project again this summer. We have been In July last summer, we accumulating more of our organized a recycling program outdated equipment in a funded by Apple Computer, in warehouse storeroom and will which we were able to recycle at eliminate more of this waste no cost to the district, 40 gaylords again this summer. or 4ft. by 4ft. by 4ft. containers full of all our outdated
File Server $om page 1 I will migrate all student files to the new server as well, so that next year the FS4400 will not be available. We have successfully migrated most users and their files to the new server, and will finish the project this summer. If we are able to extend wireless broadband to Greenwood and island City, we will be able to migrate all existing users to the single file server which will simplify management. Even though we have added sufficient disk space to our file servers, I encourage all users to clean up old, unnecessary files to keep us from running out of disk space again. Before you leave for the summer do a little digital houscleaning, please!
