For the past couple of weeks, students have been studying cells, which are the basic building blocks of life. As a culminating project, students are asked to build a 3-D model of a cell as their homework project for this report card marking period. Each cell model needs to include the key components of a cell, represented in a three-dimensional fashion. This means that students will need to have materials that allow them to suspend objects inside of a defined space approximately 18 inches in diameter or less. The decision of which materials to use is left up to each student’s creativity and thoughtfulness. Part of the assignment is to explain why each component of the model was chosen. Some possible suggestion for materials include: a shoebox, small Styrofoam cooler, and stiff wire. Cell parts that need to be represented are: • Cell walls (for plant cells) • Cell membrane • • • • • Volume 5, Issue 37 Nucleus (one) June 8, 2009 Endoplasmic reticulum Ribosomes (many) • June 12, 2009 Mitochondria (several) Lysosomes (several for animal Rehearsal for 8th cells) grade Honors • Vacuoles (several for plant cells, Award Program, several for animal cells) 10:30am-11:30am • Chloroplasts (several for plant cells) • Golgi Complex (one) • June 15, 2009 8th grade class field The finished models need to be strong trip to Cedar Point enough to survive being transported to (all day) school and back home again. • June 15, 2009 8:00am-11:30am, Dondero Auditorium, 7M ELA movie June 15, 2009 8:40am-10:00am at the Gathering Place, 6S Awards Ceremony June 15, 2009 1:20pm-3:05pm Dondero Auditorium, 7R Awards Ceremony June 16, 2009 8:00am-12:00pm Dondero Auditorium, 8th grade Honors Awards Program June 16, 2009 8th grade dance • • Highlights • • 8th grade field trip to Ann Arbor’s Power Center for the Performing Arts where we saw a play called Molecules.
