This year has been very busy. All major repair/replacement and remodel projects are complete. Many thanks to those who pitched in and spent many hours on these projects. If the Post had to pay labor costs, we could not have done it. Our Post is under review for selection for “All State” for our third year in a row. We most likely will not find out the results of this review until just before the State Convention that starts on June 19th. In closing, I would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for all of the help they have provided to the Post. Without them, we would not have any children’s events nor many of the great breakfasts and dinners they put on and many of the meals they help serve. In addition, I would like to thank Karen, our canteen manager and her staff of Carol, Sue, Karen II and Trudie. You gals are a great team. Dear Sisters, As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank you all for your support and help. I look forward to another great year. A special thanks to the ladies who were always there for me when I asked for help. Our Flag Burning event was well attended. Thank you to the cub scouts who came out bright and early to participate. We had a very successful and inspiring ceremony on Memorial Day. The scouts did an outstanding job placing flags on the grave sites. The speaker was excellent. We were pleased to have Tim Sprague, incoming Senior Vice Commander for our District participate in the ceremony. Hope to see you all at our next meeting on June 12th. President Mary Stonecipher Senior Vice President Maxine Anttila Junior Vice President Buff Greaney Secretary/Treasurer Betsy Smith Chaplain Karen Lewellen Guard Alana Lee Patriotic Instructor Helen Larson Conductress Ruth Bradley Trustees 1st Year: Buff Greaney 2nd Year: Open 3rd Year: Cat Forrest Sincerely, Sincerely, Bob Anttila Don Stonecipher Our Post has 570 paid members for 2009. We’ll begin our 2010 membership drive this month. Thanks to everyone who signed up new eligible candidates. We finished up with 100.88% membership. That’s an OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT! Let’s keep the ball rolling for 2010. It’s been my privilege to serve as Senior Vice Commander for the past two years. Friends, comrades, brothers and sisters are the words I’d use to describe the members of Poway Post 7907. All of you have touched my life. The common thread we share has a profound effect and runs deeper than any other fraternity could imagine. Just a reminder. The Buddy Poppy cards will be taken down on July 1st. If you would like to have yours, please pick it up any time after that date. Your Comrade, Glen Cecil has just returned from a first place victory in the Spring Valley 3-meter springboard diving championships. Way to go, Cecil! Bob (Stud Muffin) Hylton has had to schedule carpal tunnel surgery on his pinching hand. Good luck and best wishes, Bob. Bill Hall will be appearing soon on the Iron Chef, Wounded Warrior Division. He is looking for donations of Band-Aids and Burn Cream for his trip. Dave and Dottie Valley will soon be appearing on Dancing with the Stars. Watch for more information. SPOTTED: Howard Dunbar tricycle shopping on the Poway Mile of Cars........ Look for more happenings soon. Fresh from his triumphant engagement at Bob’s Cowboy Bar in the Oklahoma Panhandle and the Garden City Kansas Beef Empire Days, Ken Stonecipher and the So-Cal Country All Stars will be appearing at Country Night at the Post on Friday, June 19th. “I can’t wait to get back to the Poway VFW,” Ken said. “Of all the places I’ve ever played, that’s one of ‘em!.” Ken, his wife Sherry and their four sons will be in California for a much needed vacation week. They will be staying at the luxurious “Commander’s Cabin” Bed and Breakfast in Poway. “I couldn’t imagine being in Poway for a week and not playing at the VFW Post” said Ken, who is leaving his regular band, Wooden Nickel back home in Oklahoma. “Two of them don’t have passports, so they won’t let them into California, and one gets the bends if he travels past Albuquerque.” The night will feature our usual Friday night dinner, followed by music and fun. “I guarantee it will be the most fun you can have in Poway with your clothes on!” remarked Stonecipher. Our “5th Annual Fourth of July Event” will take place on July 4th. We will have a special pool tournament between Kenny Bates and Mark Mark. Proceeds from both the pool tournament and the June 27th horseshoe tournament will go to Stand Down. We will have more information on Stand Down and the 4th of July in the July newsletter. “Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, Tom Johnson announced that the National Resource Directory, a web-based “yellow book” for wounded, ill and injured service members, veterans, their families and families of the fallen and those who support them, is now available on CalVet’s web site at the following link: www.calvet.ca.gov. The National Resource Directory, developed by the U.S. Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs provides information on more than 10,000 services and resources available through governmental and non-governmental organizations. This plethora of organizations currently provides support for recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration into the community for wounded, ill and injured service members. It will compliment the extensive list of resources already available on CalVet’s web site.” Please email me at the address below if you are interested in joining the House Committee, or if you were on the committee with Patrick and wish to remain. All help and ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. vernon.dumolt@us.army.mil Thank you to Al and Helen Larson for their generous donation to the Post from the proceeds of Helen’s birthday party.
