Welcome to new Beach Reps
We are pleased to let you know that we have added two new beach reps to the Board. Penny Kubicz and Fred Pierson
have volunteered to represent the Fiesta Shores area. Thanks to both for wanting to assist in getting out the news, being a
contact, and providing their input in the direction of the Association.
Our first Rose Lake Chicken Barbeque held in June was a great event. Nelson’s provided some great chicken, the location
at Greg Miller’s was perfect, and the weather turned out good as well. For a first year event and not knowing what to
expect, we felt happy with the result.
We sold 388 dinners plus orders of Pit Taters and beverages. All totaled we took in $2,742.00. Our expenses were about
$3,378, so we had to cover about $700. Our goal was to breakeven, and if we sold the 500 meals targeted we would have
reached that goal. Other than food costs the largest expenses were tent rental and port-a-johns. We think that we can cut
back on those costs. We have some ideas on how to make this successful, and we want your feedback.
We believe that having the event in June helps get information out to the lake residents early in the year. The annual
meeting is out of the way, and it does not conflict with the many individual lake picnics that are held later in the summer.
So here are some ideas to make this a great community event:
• Move the date back to the weekend after Father’s day, which also happened to be a race weekend at
• Publish the date of the Barbeque at the end of the summer for the next year so folks can mark their
• More signage on US-27 and main roads, and emphasize it is rain or shine.
• Reduce the number and size of tents, and use personal canopies, eliminate 1 port-a-john.
• Add a side dish to base price and change the side dish offering.
Think about any ideas you have and offer them to your beach rep, so they can be included as a part of the planning
process for next year.
Rose Lake Gear “ON SALE”-We still have caps, t-shirts and just a few sweatshirts. We are closing out this design and
are selling hats and t-shirts for just $6.00. Contact your beach rep or Kathy Baker on Lanes Beach.
U.S. Flag Project-Bill Tester on Lane’s Beach is part of an ROTC project that is collecting old US Flags for proper
disposal. As you know, our flag is to be disposed of properly and not deposited in the trash. If you have any, contact Bill
on Lanes Beach.
Please provide the information below to update the Association records.

At the annual meeting the Branch County Sheriff’s Department was on hand and had a discussion about boating safety.
They discussed the patrol activity on the area lakes, and enforcement actions. They are enforcing personal floatation
device (PFD) usage on children. So be sure that you are using the correct style. They also discussed boating safety
regarding distances from docks, anchored boats, etc. It is generally the “100 foot” rule. What was noted in the discussion
was that the skier is considered part of the boat when determining the distance. Check the boating guide, if you don’t have
one check with your Beach Rep or Branch County or the State of Michigan website.
Water Quality Testing
As noted in the June Newsletter, we have restarted water quality testing at selected locations in Rose, Bingham, and Little
Rose. This is a recap of Greg Gemmill’s presentation at the meeting, as well as, the statistics. In comparing records of
our first 2 sets of water samples collected, with some of the past numbers, we can see some trends forming. He is
available to answer questions.
Since there are but 4 sites that overlap from past tests, these are the ones that are listed. Grass Lake Pump Station and
Lane's Beach show some increases in fecal coliform, whereas the dam outlet and the inlet on Bingham Lake show
reductions. Nitrogen and phosphate levels have remained pretty steady with little fluctuation. This shows us that much of
the influence tends to be Agriculture related. The need to test further upstream in the spring may give us a little better
insight into the numbers that we see. The fact that all numbers at the outlets are lower shows that the lake is acting as
nature's filter, and is cleaning much of what we are putting in. This also tends to cause greater plant growth throughout
As always it is recommended that lake residents use only low or no phosphate fertilizer on your lawn, and spread no
closer than 10' - 12' from the lake, preferably when there is no rain in the immediate forecast. This allows your yard to
absorb without running off into the lake. Phosphorus is only necessary for new lawns to establish root systems. Also,
please maintain your septic system. It is a good idea to contact a local septic pumper to establish how often your
particular system should be pumped based on usage.
It is the Board’s decision to continue two samplings per year to develop ongoing statistics on any changes in the water
quality. The sites have been determined based upon communication with the health department to develop the most
