Centre School Newsletter - June 2009
Dear Centre School Families,

The last day of school for this 2008-2009 school year is scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2009. This will be a full day of
school for students in kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2. Preschool will conclude their school year on Thursday, June 11,
2009.
All of our Centre School students will be busy using these last three weeks of school to complete academic program
requirements for each curriculum area. End of the year assessments are in the process of being completed in language arts,
mathematics, and physical education. Report Cards and your child’s NWEA scores will be mailed to you. If you have
questions about the NWEA Primary MAPS Assessment that grade 1 and grade 2 students took in language arts and
mathematics, please contact Mrs. Kathy Bates, Hampton’s Curriculum Director, at 926-8706. Our staff will be available on
June 22- 24, if you have questions about your child’s final progress report. Please call the school at 926-8706 to contact a
teacher or to leave a message.

We enjoyed meeting all of our families at our Kindergarten Literacy Night and the Grade 1 and Grade 2 Literacy
Night in May. These were special evenings for both students and staff. It was nice to show off some of the students’ hard work
that has been taking place all year. We are so proud of the work and progress that our students made this year and it was nice to
have an opportunity to share it with you.

During the month of June, we have some exciting and fun activities planned for your children. Kindergarten students
are scheduled to take their annual field trip to Newcastle Beach and Commons on Tuesday, June 2nd, and they will also have
their Kindergarten Concert on Thursday, June 4th. Grade 2 students will visit Marston School on Wednesday, June 3rd. They
will have a chance to meet some of the Marston School staff and see some of the important places such as the cafeteria and the
classrooms. On June 8th, we ask students to wear “red, white, and blue” to help celebrate Flag Day at our All School Meeting.
Please help your child pick out colors to wear for that day. Everyone’s favorite day is Field Day. Centre School’s Field Day
will be held on Friday, June 12th, with a rain date scheduled for Monday, June 15th. Students are encouraged to wear Class
Colors on Field Day. Class colors will be BLUE for Kindergarten, RED for First Grade, and YELLOW for Second Grade.
Staff will wear WHITE or their Class colors. We also encourage everyone to wear their Centre School “eagle” shirts on our
last day of school. We will hold our annual “Fly-Up” for kindergarten and grade 1 students on June 19. Students will meet their
next year’s teacher and see their next year’s classroom. Grade 2 students will get extra time as a whole group to play together
when “Fly Up” is happening.

The Summer Skills Program for Grades K–4 will be held at Marston School during the month of July. Mrs. Antico,
Marston School Guidance Counselor, is the Summer Skills Program Director. Students that are participating will be notified of
program details during the first weeks of June.

Our PTA had a great year and did some wonderful things for our school. They continue to enrich our school in so
many ways. We are so fortunate at Centre School to have parents that truly understand the importance of a positive home-
school partnership. We are grateful to all of the parents and guardians who returned the volunteer slips for Field Day. A huge
THANK YOU to all of our many Centre School Volunteers who helped in classrooms, the computer lab, the library, and with
die-cuts, staff appreciation events, PTA “Boxtops” and fundraisers, grandparent teas, special projects, phone calls, and as
chaperones on field trips. Whatever we need, you are there to help out. Without doubt, you make our school a better place.
Special thanks to our PTA Volunteer Coordinators who met regularly with us throughout the year, Erin Connor, Nichole
Willcox and Vicki Petalas. It is through the efforts of all of you that Centre School has repeatedly been awarded a Blue Ribbon
for our volunteer program.

We also appreciated the partnership with each of our families throughout this year in assuring that your children read
daily and completed their homework each week. We hope that all of our families will encourage our Centre School students to
continue their daily reading habits throughout the summer. The librarian from the Lane Library will explain the town library’s
summer program to students on Monday, June 8. Also, please watch for the information from our librarian, Mrs. Steren, to be
sent home in June.

The staff is currently working hard to develop class lists for 2009-2010. We appreciate the parent placement input
that was returned to your child’s teacher. Thank you for remembering that we cannot honor parent requests for specific
teachers. Our goal is to have heterogeneous classes with an equitable mix of boys and girls. Your child’s teacher, the school
counselor, the reading specialist, the integrated arts teachers, the special education teachers, and the administrators spend much
time formulating and reviewing the class lists for next year. Next year’s classroom teacher’s name will be put on the final
progress report being sent home with your child for students in preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade. In
addition, on June 19 parents will receive a special notice letting them know their child’s teacher assignment for the coming
school year. By the end of June, incoming Kindergarten students will receive a letter in the mail telling them information
about the beginning of the school year and the name of their kindergarten teacher for 2009-2010. Class lists will be posted at
the school entrance in late August.

A copy of next year’s school calendar for the 2009-2010 School Year is currently posted on the SAU 21 website. The
final Hampton School Calendar will be available once dates for Release Days are finalized. Centre School will begin the
2009-2010 School Year with our traditional “staggered opening”. We have found that this provides a smooth transition for our
primary age students as they begin their new school year. On Tuesday, September 1, all First Grade and Second Grade
students, as well as students in the AM Preschool and Kindergarten students with last names beginning with A-M, will share
their first day of school with their parents when they come to Orientation Day. On Wednesday, September 2nd, all PM
Preschool students and their parents, and all Kindergarten students and their parents with last names beginning with N–Z are
invited to their first day of school Orientation. This Orientation Day gives students and their parents an opportunity to meet
their new teachers on an individual basis, to get acquainted with their classrooms, to receive their Eagle folders, and to greet
some of their classmates. This will also give parents and guardians a chance to update the school office with their emergency
contact data and medical information. We will ask the First Student Bus Company to park a bus near our entrance so students
can meet a bus driver and take a peek inside a school bus. Wednesday, September 2nd, will be the first day of classes for First
and Second Grade students. Thursday, September 3rd will be the first day of classes for Kindergarten students. Tuesday,
September 8th, will be the first day of classes for Preschool. Classes will not be held on Friday, September 4th or Monday,
September 7th in honor of the Labor Day Holiday.

The Centre School office remains open all summer. Please contact the school office at (603) 926-8706 if you have
questions or concerns about the school program. We can be reached through voice mail or by e-mail at nandrews@sau21.org.
Please visit the Centre School website and the SAU #21 website at www.sau21.org/centre for current information from our
school and the Superintendent’s Office. A list of upcoming June and summer events is listed below for your information.

There will be a final Newsletter sent home on the last day of school with your child to update you on any new school
news or summer information.

                                    Sincerely yours,

                                    Nancy J. Andrews Karen Reynolds
