These next two weeks are filled with many activities as we conclude our 2008-2009 school year. It has certainly been a busy year. We have accomplished so much. Students, staff, and parents have all worked very hard to provide the best possible learning environment at Memorial School. Students will begin their well-deserved summer break at the end of the day on the 16th of June, the students’ last day. In recent years it has been a half-day, but due to the ice storm and the subsequent make-up schedule, the students’ last day will be a full day. We wish our fifth graders the best as they move on to the middle school. We are very proud of you for all you have done, and we know that you will continue to make wonderful contributions as you move on. Please do not forget to come back and visit to share your accomplishments! Ms. Jundi recently completed coursework certifying her in this area. An opening at Bakie School allowed Ms. Jundi the opportunity to pursue her goal of becoming a special educator. We are very proud of Ms. Jundi and congratulate her for this accomplishment. We will certainly miss her here at Memorial School, where she has been for the past ten years. Best of luck, Ms. Jundi. We would like to thank the parents in this community for the unwavering support and dedication demonstrated each and every day. We benefit greatly from your generosity. It is an honor to work with such dedicated advocates for children. Thank you to Rebecca Hallisey and Renee King for their significant contributions over the past three years as PTO CoPresidents. Your hard work for our school is truly appreciated. Thank you, Renee and Rebecca! P f e i f e r B l a k e Off-site Evacuation Drill Yesterday, Memorial School and Sanborn Regional Middle School participated in their first Off-site Evacuation Drill. This drill is part of the ongoing formulation of SAU17’s All-Hazards Plan. This plan outlines specific procedures for various emergency situations, from fire drills to secured building drills. The various state and local officials that observed this drill provided valuable feedback on how we might improve our plan to keep our students and staff safe in an emergency situation. Many of the observers commented on the professionalism of our staff and the respect demonstrated by our students throughout the drill. Each member of our community should be very proud of helping to instill these traits and values in the students in our school. Please have a safe and enjoyable summer with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you in August. H A V E A H A P P Y A N D S A F E S U M M E R V A C A T I O N T H I S M O N T H O N W W W . S A U 1 7 . Seatbelt Safety Week- May 11--15th The week of May 11th to the 15th was designated as “BUCKLE-UP NH WEEK.” The NH Highway Safety Agency sponsors this annual campaign to increase awareness of the life-saving importance of wearing seatbelts. During Buckle-up Week, our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students participated in the “Seatbelt Safety Speed Challenge.” As part of their Health and Phys-Ed classes, in teams of four, they buckled and unbuckled their safety belts in an automobile, four times in four different seats, as a timed challenge. Our students in grades 4 had the fastest time in the challenge this year, with a time of 39.28 seconds. The winning team members, from 4TA were: A.J. Woodhouse, Abigail DesRosiers, Shannon Emerson, and Kyle Erickson. Second place honors with a time of 41.94 seconds were earned by team from Mr. LaPorte’s 5th grade class: Christian Ehlers, Grahm Larkham, Taylor Smith and Madison Parah. Third place, with a time of 42.50 seconds, was won by the team of Trevor Trites, Eddie Linscott, Connor Sirois and Tessa Gordon-Couture in Mrs. Hanson’s 5th grade class. Miss Briggs and Mrs. Fox would like to thank the members of the Sanborn High School Key Club for their assistance with our Seatbelt Challenge this year. These students, and all those participating in this challenge prove that there is always time to buckle up before leaving your driveway! Medication Pick-up in the Health Office: Parents are reminded to pick up their child’s medications from the Health Office no later than June16th. By School District Policy, no student medication may be stored in the Health Office beyond the current school year. Any medication not retrieved by a parent by June 16th will be discarded, as only parents may carry these medications. Please call Mrs. Fox, school nurse with any questions regarding this information. Immunization and Physical Exam reminder for Grade 5 parents: On May 7th, your child was given a yellow notice regarding immunization and physical exam requirements for entry into Middle School. Documentation of the child’s most recent physical, and proof of Varicella (chicken pox) immunity by either 2 vaccinations or statement of disease, as well as a TDaP booster after age 11, must to be sent to Mrs. Fox as soon as possible, and no later than June 10th. (Continued) This documentation is required before entry to 6 grade, per State Department of Health and Human Services of NH requirements. Please ask your child for this form, and if your child has had a case of the chicken pox, please complete and send in the bottom portion of the letter listing the date or age that your child ACTUALLY HAD THE DISEASE OF CHICKEN POX. This will tell us that they have natural immunity. Also, please attach a copy of their full updated immunization record and last physical exam to this yellow sheet and sent it to Mrs. Fox. You may have your doctor’s office fax these forms directly to Mrs. Fox, at 603-382-1466. Mrs. Fox will update your child’s computerized health record to be transferred to Middle School at the end of this school year. Thank you for your prompt response to this notice. th Bicycle Safety—NH Law requiring helmets for children under age 16 Spring is here and bicycle riding season has begun. All NH children under age 16 are required by law to wear a bicycle helmet when riding. Please take the time to remind your child to wear a bike helmet EVERY TIME that they ride a bicycle, scooter, or skate board, to prevent brain injury. We expect to see all of our students wearing a helmet if they ride their bike to Memorial School. DHHS Confirms Rise in Cases of H1N1 in New Hampshire The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) recently released the confirmed number of cases of H1N1 (swine) influenza in NH is 39, but that all of these individuals are recovering without complications. 62% of the cases in New Hampshire were diagnosed in people under the age of 18. Dr. Jose Montero was quoted as saying, “We can’t stress enough that if a child is sick or not feeling well, they should not attend school or any other activities where there is the potential to expose others to this illness. Currently there are no clusters or outbreaks detected or reported in any school in the State. We continue to work with the educational community, however, and have recommended heightened awareness of influenza-like illness.” DHHS continues to recommend that everyone stay home from work or school if you feel sick; cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve when you cough or sneeze; and wash your hands frequently. These steps can help prevent the spread of H1N1 and other illnesses. For questions about H1N1, possible symptoms, travel information, or other issues related to this illness, residents can call 1-888-330-6764 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily. For more information on H1N1 flu, visit www.dhhs.nh.gov or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at www.cdc.gov/H1N1flu.
