At the May meeting, our guest speaker, Chantale Delrue, gave us a talk about the Sacred Tree and
how it has played a significant part in religion and history for many centuries and still does today.
The Christian cross is one example. The talk was accompanied by a variety of interesting slides.
Following that, Chantale talked about her paper making, how she collects material from the bush
and dyes her papers. Again she had slides to show the amazing variety of colours that is
achievable.
At the Ozmas dinner, there will be three main meals served by the ‘drop’ system
which means that the meals will be brought to each table and we swap to get the one we prefer - as
far as possible. Could people please pay Barbara Baddiley in advance by the end of Tuesday, June
30. If payment is not received by that date, it will be assumed that that member is not attending.
Also, if a member has paid and cannot attend, they must let Barbara know by Tuesday, June 30, to
guarantee a refund.
Anne Hallam (Convener)

JUNE MEETING
At our June meeting, Dr. Phil Bell of the Threatened Species section of the Primary Industries
Department will be talking on the subject of butterflies and in particular a project which has been
launched to focus on the five threatened species of the forty or so butterflies that we have in
Tasmania.
To help achieve this aim, Dr. Bell hopes to raise awareness with backyard gardeners on ways to
protect butterflies in our gardens by growing and protecting habitat.

DID YOU KNOW?
A recipe for preventing Powdery Mildew:
        4 level tablespoons baking powder
2.5 tablespoons oil (white oil/pest oil)
        Drop of detergent
        4.5 litres water
Spray weekly until the problem is solved.

Here are a few anti-possum remedies:
   • Spray your roses with a strong brew of Lapsang Souchong tea.

    • In a saucepan mix together
8 dried chillies or 25g chilli flakes
            1 tablespoon ground pepper
            700ml vinegar
Bring it slowly to a simmer, cover and remove from heat and allow to infuse. Spray it
onto the plants the possums like. Respray after rain.
    • Use a radio! Put an old radio in a box near the plants that are being eaten and leave it on all
        night.

DON’T FORGET
Last but not least, please bring plants, seedlings or seeds to the meeting for the Trade Table the
income from which boosts our finances.
