By now a number of club boats have been launched, and there are more to come. The sailing season has begun! See the calendar for cruises, applicant weekends, and on-land social events.
The Dinghy Race/Food Fest held at Community Boating was a resounding success. More than 40 Pelagians signed up for sailing or just cheerleading from shore. 8. Business / Social Calendar 8 Our own Ilene Mason & Bill Paxton took home the 2nd place trophies. Personally, I had never been to CB before. It is a lovely spot, even to just sit and watch the world go by. This joint venture between CB and Pelagic is just the first step in getting the name and mission of Pelagic out to a greater audience. Many thanks to Jane Durna and Deb Herreilers for organizing this event. The 1st evaluation weekend of the year is June 20-21st. There are a number of new applicants for 2009 and a few from last year who did not complete their evaluations. Boat Owners—the club needs you to step forward to insure that these applicants make it through the membership process. And the June speaker will be Seth Mandell from the Mattapoisett Historical Society. Many members who have sailed out of Mattapoisett know Seth from his work as launch driver, and this is his 2nd time as the monthly speaker. Let’s go sailing! Monica

Elaine Olmstead, Fleet Captain - Meetings
Over 40 Pelagians turned our for a great day of sailing, socializing and barbequing at Community Boating on May 16th. Charlie Zechel gave valuable advice for racing the Mercury sailing dinghies in a morning clinic that featured whiteboard presentations and on-the-water racing. For fairness, the actual race courses used for the afternoon "real" race wasn't divulged until the final skippers meeting at 2:00 PM.
2
"Racers - Chose Your Mercury"
Four races were held in the afternoon - two around a triangular "A" course and two around a "B" loop marked by two buoys. The competitive spirit grew keener as the racing progressed with shouts of "STARBOARD BOAT, STARBOARD BOAT" and "REQUEST TO PASS THROUGH" followed by an emphatic "NO". A windsurfer's capsize right next to a racing buoy caused some additional excitement, especially for the surfer who looked up to see 18 racing dinghies searching for a way to get around him without losing their spot!
The Winners! (With Charlie Zechel)
3rd Place (tie)
Indra Epple Anna Maria Veeland Seth Goodman Dave Toth
2nd Place
Ilene Mason Bill Paxton
1st Place
Katherine Miera Peryn McLaughlin
Despite brutal competition (including the winning team that's rated at the top of Community Boating's racing fleet), Pelagic's own Ilene Mason and Bill Paxton placed second in the competions among the 18 boats that finished all the races. Congratulations to Ilene and Bill! After the race, the barbeque grill was fired up and soon the aroma of hot dogs and burgers turned off the racing adreneline and turned on appetites. A great spread was set out and everyone enjoyed salad, chips hot dogs, burghers and dessert. No one left hungry!
