1. INTRODUCTION TO NEW PROGRAMME PROPOSALS

Programme Proposal Approval

Many of the attributes of programmes (for coding on OSS and for both internal
and external reporting purposes) can be derived from determining a specific
‘type’ or ‘category’ of programme. As such, the application submission
process has been disaggregated into two distinct but related stages, the
determination of a programme type (or programme category for collaborative
provision) and the completion of the programme proposal proforma. The
proforma document comprises three distinct sections; depending upon the
nature of the application more than one section of the proforma will require
completion. The sections of the programme proposal proforma are:

* Section A:   Programme information

* Section B: Collaborative provision (additional information)

* Section C: Foundation degrees (additional information)

Depending upon the responses given to a number of prompts within the
interface regarding collaborative provision and Foundation Degrees, a
bespoke proforma document will be generated for completion, as follows:

Once the proposal has been generated this must be completed in full and
submitted to the relevant School for scrutiny. Should this approval be granted,
the proposal will either (for non-CP provision) be forwarded by the Faculty to
the Planning & Development Committee or (for collaborative provision) be
forwarded by the Faculty to the Collaborative Partnerships Team.

                                                                             3

JACS Coding

The Joint Academic Coding System (JACS) is a framework used throughout
Higher Education. The JACS codes utilised here are common throughout the
coding of programmes and modules. These codes are used heavily within the
National Student Survey and more importantly when a program is searched
for within UCAS. Therefore coding is important to align with your exact
provision within your faculty.

In choosing JACS codes the list can be reduced by selecting the principal
subject area. These are aligned to : -

A Medicine and Dentistry
B Subjects Allied to Medicine
C Biological Sciences (This includes Sports Science)
D Veterinary Sciences, Agriculture and related subjects
F Physical Sciences
G Mathematical and Computer Sciences
H Engineering
J Technologies
K Architecture, Building and Planning
L Social studies
M Law
N Business and Administrative studies
P Mass Communications and Documentation
Q Linguistics, Classics and related subjects
R European Languages, Literature and related subjects
T Eastern, Asiatic, African, American and Australasian Languages, Literature
and related subjects
V Historical and Philosophical studies
W Creative Arts and Design
