PRESS RELEASE and PHOTOCALL 28 May 2009 PRESTONPANS BACK GARDEN ARCHAEOLOGY DIG Saturday 30 May will see archaeologists descend on back gardens in two streets in Prestonpans, East Lothian in search of artefacts from the Battle of Prestonpans. They also hope to find remnants of Preston House – where some say the Jacobite rebellion was originally plotted. The archaeology team from Glasgow University’s Centre for Battlefield Archaeology is led by Dr Tony Pollard of BBC Two Men in a Trench fame and an eminent expert on the subject. They have been surveying areas associated with the famous 1745 battle for several weeks and now want to examine the gardens of houses built on or near the actual battlefield. Already several residents of Schaw Road and Polwarth Terrace have reported finding artefacts from the battle over the years, including musket and cannon balls and buttons. So these two streets now form the focus for the archaeologists on Saturday. These houses lie on land that was once part of Preston House and its gardens. Preston House has a special place in Jacobite history as the home of Lord Grange, the brother of the Earl of Mar who led the 1715 Jacobite rising. It is said that it was here that much of the planning for the ’45 took place and that Lord Grange had his own wife exiled to St Kilda for fear that she would betray them. The archaeology team has been calling for local residents to volunteer to have their gardens surveyed and a number have already come forward. Among them is Julie Aitkin and her family, who live in Schaw Road. Julie, who is the manager of Harlawhill Day Centre in Prestonpans, was the first to volunteer her garden for further scrutiny: “We have already found musket balls and buttons in our back garden,” said Julie. “And there are still parts that have never been dug over since the houses were built, so I’m really hopeful that there might be more evidence of the battle to be found here. “I think it is fascinating that our house is built on such a historic bit of land and I’m really keen to do what I can to help the archaeologists find out more about what happened here. I know many of my neighbours are also enthusiastic about taking part in the survey.” Over the past few months the archaeologists, including Natasha Ferguson who has also been making presentations at local schools, have visited Prestonpans several times. To date they have surveyed areas around Bankton House, fields to the north of Tranent Church and land around Prestonpans Community Centre – all areas associated with different aspects of the battle. Dr Tony Pollard commented: “So far we have concentrated on the peripheral areas of the battle – but now we are moving on to look the area of fighting and the immediate aftermath. “Schaw Road and Polwarth Terrace are part of an estate built just outside the walls of Preston House, which once stood close by. It was against these walls that the government army became trapped during the battle and where most of the casualties were incurred. “We are really hopeful of finding some evidence of the battle in this area and we’re especially pleased to be able to involve the community so closely in the survey. Without their co-operation this part of the project wouldn’t be possible.” Between 2 and 19 June the archaeologists will be searching for the remains of Preston House and surveying other areas associated with the battle. Anyone interested in taking part in the project should contact Natasha Ferguson on 0141 330 5541. The archaeological survey has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust. It forms part of a wider project to properly interpret and protect the battle site and the Battle Trust is campaigning to create a major visitor centre close to the site by 2011. ends PHOTOCALL DETAILS: Date: Time: Venue: Event: Saturday 30 May 11.30am 33 Schaw Road, Prestonpans.
