THE COMMUNITY Pittsburg is a culturally rich and diverse community of over 61,500 residents, located at the gateway to Northern California’s fabulous 1,000-mile Delta waterways. Today, Pittsburg is one of the fastest growing cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. With planned housing, business and commercial development, Pittsburg is expected to reach a population of nearly 80,000 in the next 20 years. Pittsburg is an industrial center with a large labor force. Families and young professionals are drawn to the community’s affordable and abundant new housing, and once here, they soon discover other reasons to call Pittsburg home. It has fine waterfront homes, an immaculate park system, extensive recreational facilities, including one of California’s largest and most modern marinas, a large public school system and many shopping centers. Pittsburg is on the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) line providing transportation service to the entire Bay Area. THE DEPARTMENT Our Mission is to maintain peace and order by providing high quality police services that are responsive to the needs of the community. We protect life and property by apprehending those who commit criminal acts, by developing partnerships to prevent, reduce, or eliminate neighborhood problems, and by providing police services that are fair, professional, and respectful of the dignity of all individuals. The Police Department is divided into two main Bureaus: Operations and Support Services. Some of the specialized divisions within the department are Investigations, Narcotics, Records, Evidence, Traffic and Community Relations. Each of these functions support and enhance our community policing efforts. THE POSITION The City of Pittsburg Police Department places great importance on community relations and working with the community in the prevention of crime. One method used to assure these relations is the Community Policing Program. This program allows Police Officers to become more involved and Integrated into the community. Through methods such as Community Policing, the Pittsburg Police Department strives to provide services to the community and to establish a relationship with the community in order to serve as a trusted resource in time of need. The Police Trainee is a non-sworn position. Trainees attend a POST approved academy and upon successful graduation are appointed to the position of Police Officer. This is an outstanding opportunity for individuals with a desire to begin a career in law enforcement. The City of Pittsburg Police Officer performs general police work in the area of traffic control and enforcement, crime prevention, law enforcement and investigation and community policing. Within their designated beat, the Police Officer patrols the area to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes and to enforce traffic regulations. Police officers answer calls for service and carry out a variety of special assignments as required,: such as: SWAT or K9. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Police Officer/ Trainee: High School diploma or GED 21 years of age at the time of appointment to the position of Police Officer. Ability to learn and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Effective written and oral communication skills U.S. citizen before application for employment as a Police Officer. If an applicant is a permanent resident alien, they must apply for citizenship at least one year before applying for employment. Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid class C California driver’s license which must be maintained throughout employment, possess and maintain proof of auto liability insurance. Must have normal color vision and normal hearing acuity. Must have 20/40 vision in each eye without corrective lens, or visual acuity separately correctable to 20/40 or better. Weight must be in proportion to height. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Police Trainee: Paid at 20% less than Step A of Police Officer APPLICATION PROCESS The selection process consists of screening of applicants, Physical Agility Test (pass/fail), P.O.S.T Written Exam, and Departmental Interview. Applicants passing both the Physical Agility Test and the POST written exam, with a Tscore of 44 or above, will be invited to the Departmental Interview. If the applicant passes the interviews, his/her name is placed on an employment list that is valid for six months, unless extended or abolished earlier. From this list appointments are made for the position of Police Officer/Trainee upon successful completion of a medical examination, psychological and polygraph examination and a thorough background investigation. Veterans who have received an honorable discharge within the past five years may receive additional consideration. Veterans must provide a DD214 or other acceptable proof of service with each application. The Human Resources Department will make reasonable efforts in the examination process to accommodate persons with disabilities. Please advise us in advance of any special examination needs.
