Summer 09 Voice of Asbury Woods Asbury Woods Update Award Winning Staff and Programs Welcome to Asbury Woods, Now Get Out(doors)! By Brian Winslow, Director I borrowed this slogan from a poster prepared by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources a few years ago encouraging visitors to get outdoors. I think it’s a timely slogan with a renewed focus on wellness and environmental awareness highlighted in the book “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder” by Richard Louv. By the way, Louv will be a featured speaker at Chautauqua Institute on July 1 and would be well worth the trip. Steve Wasiesky, PAEE Environmental Educator of the Year Award Recipient, Bonnie Barthelmes, Asbury Woods Environmental Educator and Brian Winslow, Nature Center Director accepting awards at the PAEE conference. Asbury Woods and the Millcreek Township School District received two awards at the annual state conference of the Pennsylvania Association for Environmental Educators this past March. Steve Wasiesky Environmental Education Coordinator was presented with the Outstanding Environmental Educator Award. This award is presented annually to “an individual who made a significant teaching contribution to the environmental education field”. Steve has made just such a significant contribution to Environmental Education, having worked and volunteered in the field for over 30 years at Asbury Woods. Congratulations Steve, we are proud of your accomplishment! The Outstanding Environmental Education Program Award was presented to Asbury Woods and the Millcreek Township School District. This award recognizes an exemplary environmental education program which could be used as a model program. The school district and nature center have worked together since the 1960’s to create an continued on page 2... The Erie Times News recognized in an editorial in May that we are fortunate to live in Erie where there are so many opportunities to get out(doors). There’s plenty to do outdoors here at Asbury Woods, whether it’s solitude you seek or a group learning experience. Here’s my top ten list: 1. Send a kid to one of our five nature day camps. They’re sure to get dirty, learn something new, make new friends and come home tired. 2. Sneak out of the house at dawn; find a quiet place and just chill. My favorite spots are the Monahan deck and the pedestrian bridge on the Greenway Trail. 3. If you’re a teacher, attend our Watershed Workshop. It’s essentially a Watershed Camp for Educators exploring our own Walnut Creek Watershed. 4. Pick up a digital camera and capture Nature’s beauty for yourself, try out a photography workshop for kids or adults, or explore on your own. 5. Grab some binoculars, get up early and take a bird hike. Join us for a group hike or venture out on your own. You’ll be surprised by what you see! 6. Put on some old sneakers and head out to Walnut Creek for a cool walk on a hot summer day. Join our Watershed Educator, or make your own discoveries. continued on page 2... Each year the nature center presents programs to over 10,000 students a year. Wetlands Initiatives Wetlands are one of our fastest disappearing habitats in Erie County, Northwest Pennsylvania and nationally. And the plants and animals that depend on wetlands are also threatened including; frogs, salamanders, turtles, dragon flies, ducks, geese and many species of wildflowers. Asbury Woods is working to do something about it! Through three wetlands projects, Asbury Woods Nature Center is working to protect wetlands, educate students about the value of wetlands and improves access through wetland habitats: Asbury Woods Teaching Deck And Boardwalk The existing boardwalk and small deck is rotting and sinking into the swamp and the open water habitat is in need of restoration. A conceptual plan calls for replacing the existing boardwalk and building an enlarged teaching deck featuring a lab station. During construction, the wetland habitat will be restored with improved plantings and some dredging to provide more open water for a more diverse wetland habitat to attract a larger variety of wildlife. Asbury Road Wetland In 2008, Asbury Woods led the effort to protect an important wetland on 4.5 acres located at the southeast corner of West 38th Street and Asbury Road. This biologically diverse wetland is home to many species of frogs, salamanders, ducks and geese. Plans are underway to protect and improve the wetland habitat. Asbury Woods Greenway Trail Boardwalk In 1995 the Asbury Woods Greenway was established by connecting existing green spaces with donated property to create a 200 acre park. Nearly all sections of the trail are complete except a new 200 foot section of raised boardwalk needed to give year-round, safe access to these unique habitats while protecting the fragile flood plain and wetlands. Volunteers Make the Difference Nearly every day volunteers donate their time and talents to Asbury Woods in the gift shop, office, workshop, classrooms and trails. We couldn’t operate without them! This past spring several groups helped with spring clean-up, trail work and planting trees. We’d like to say a special thanks to the following volunteer groups; students from Millcreek School District and Cathedral Prep High School, Highmark, and Wolf Scouts from Presque Isle Rotary Cub Scouts. If you’d like to become a volunteer, join us for our Trails Work day on June 6 when volunteers will work to maintain and improve our 4.5 mile trail system. Call 835-5356 to register. 7. Discover the artist in you, find a quiet place in the park and sketch, doodle or paint what you see. Explore the use of color in watercolor painting with artist Brian Payne at Asbury Woods. 8. Breathe fresh air and work up a sweat on a mountain bike or trail run on the Greenway Trail, great for both physical and mental fitness! 9. Set up a lawn chair in the back yard after dark, look up and contemplate our place in the Universe. Want to talk with an astronomy expert? Join us for one of our Astronomy nights. 10. Introduce a child, grandchild, niece or nephew to your favorite outdoor experience. Studies show that adults with an interest in Nature have three important common denominators as a child; a place outdoors to explore, frequent unstructured outdoor play time and an adult to mentor them. It doesn’t matter if it’s fishing, birding or just hiking and exploring. Take a child outdoors, then to top it off, take them for ice cream! For more information about classes mentioned above, check out the programs inside this newsletter. Look for more programming encouraging kids, families and adults to get outdoors in the coming year. But you don’t need to attend a program to get outdoors, to borrow another popular slogan... JUST DO IT!!! Betty Jo volunteers every Tuesday in the Squeaky Frog Gift Shop. She greets each visitor with a smile and helps the staff. Whether it is a meandering brook or a powerful river, I enjoy capturing the beauty in ways not obvious to most people.” Mike’s photographs show the natural beauty of the water, and the little surprises one might find around these wild places. “I have tried to capture the energy and movement in my photographs as a person may find or feel while standing in the same place.” Visit the Cottage Gallery at the Nature Center this summer to go “waterfalling” with Mike. Asbury Woods is owned and operated by the Millcreek Township School District with additional support from the Asbury Woods Partnership, Inc. a 501c3 non-profit charity.
