Student Engagement

Through Innovation.

KAITAO MIDDLE SCHOOL

 Situated in the Western Heights suburb of Rotorua.

 Catering for year 7 and year 8 students from 7 contributing schools.

 Roll 480

 Teachers 27 with a staff of 40.

 Decile 2 -- contributing schools decile one or two.

 Low socio economic area with 30% living in solo parent homes.

 Transient population

 66% Maori 28% Pakeha 6% other

 Composition boys 52% girls 48%

 We lose 50% of our students each year and get in a new 50%.

 Seen as a positive not a negative and we have high expectations of

our students.

The NZ Education System



 Students start school at 5 years old and spend years one to six

in a Primary School followed by year seven and eight in an

intermediate school and years nine to thirteen in a secondary

school.

 Schools are funded on a per pupil basis with extra funding

given for decile and level of Maori Language delivered.

Teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education according to the

NZEI Contract and start on a salary of around $35,000. Other

funding is given to upgrade facilities.

 Each school is governed by its own Board of Trustees who are

a parent elected group of five to seven members.

 The school year starts in February with four ten week terms and

a two week break between and six weeks break over Xmas and

New Year.

THE ACADEMY STRUCTURE



 Wero Matauranga Academy----for students who enjoyed

learning through sport, PE, fitness and health.Two elite classes

made up of students who excel in sport and are also academic.

 Expressive Academy----for students who enjoyed learning

through dance, music, drama and performance.75% girls

 Discovery Academy----for students who enjoy working with a

variety of technologies.

 Adventure Learning Academy----for students who are reading

below their chronological age.

 Highly Academic Accelerate Academy----for gifted and talented

learners.

 Te Puna Reo Academy…bi-lingual Maori

 Globalization

WHAT HAS CHANGED?

 2006 to 2010.

 N0 stand downs.

 No suspensions over 2008/2009/2010.

 No exclusions since 2007.

 Reduction in late students.

 Greatly reduced truancy and unexplained absences. Average

attendance up significantly and now in the 90% plus.

 50% more parental involvement.

 Fewer teacher absences.

 Increased literacy levels overall including Maori students.

 Survey results indicate parents and students much happier and more

willing to attend.

 Feedback from the secondary schools indicate higher levels of literacy,

numeracy, confidence and engagement.

 The NZ Curriculum allows each school to develop teaching and

learning programmes to suit the needs of its student population

as long as each school can demonstrate value added. We do
