High School Students Attending Colleges and Universities in Ohio While Still in High School Questions: How many recent Ohio high school students take college classes while still in high school? What districts do they come from? Why ask about high school students taking college classes in Ohio? In 1990 the Ohio General Assembly enacted the Post Secondary Options Program (PSOP). This program permits high school students to take college classes and receive credit that counts toward their high school degree and a college degree. Requirements for high school students to enroll in college are determined by local colleges and they often involve a combination of high school grade point average (B or better) and, in most cases advanced high school standing (Junior or Senior). Enrollment in college while still a high school student through the PSOP program has economic benefit, as students are able to earn college credit without paying for college tuition. Additionally, a head start on college is likely to ensure greater probability of full college enrollment once a student graduates from high school. National Answers: There are no known national data on the number or percentage of students attending high school while still enrolled in college. Statewide Answers: In Autumn of 2000 there were 7,147 high school students enrolled in Ohio’s public colleges and universities as part of the PSOP program. This is approximately 4% of the total number of graduating high school students for the previous year, although the PSOP students may have been high school students with other class ranks as well. High School District Grouping Answers: In Autumn of 2000, the 7,147 PSOP students came from all types of school districts, although they were least frequently coming from major city school districts with extremely high poverty rates, as a percentage of all graduating seniors (2%).
