The Award of Degrees and Certificates at Ohio’s Colleges and Universities Question: How many college degrees and certificates are awarded in Ohio? In what areas are college degrees and certificates awarded? Does the award of degrees and certificates vary by type of college or institution? or certificate for many reasons: Why look at the award of degrees and certificates? Students attend college without seeking a degree Students may want to take one or two courses in a year to upgrade their current skills. Students may take one or two courses in a year to enhance the quality of their lives. Students may take one or two courses in a year because they enjoy learning. Other students and their families enroll in college with the expectation that they will complete a degree or certificate. Many prospective students and their families will also have a clear idea of the discipline they wish to pursue for their degree or certificate. Such students will want to know which colleges offer the different types and various disciplines in which they are interested. National Answers: There is a clear national relationship between educational attainment of a state’s workforce and the per capita income of residents of any state. The greater the proportion of a state’s workforce with college experience, the higher the economic benefits for individuals of that state. Using the census 2000 supplementary survey* it would appear that Ohio has increased its educational attainment since 1990 but continues to lag well behind the rest of the nation in educational attainment for adults 25 years and older. Educational attainment Completed any college Completed associate or higher degree Completed bachelor or higher degree Completed graduate degree U.S. Average 1990 45% 27% 20% 7% 2000* 52% 31% 25% 9% Ohio 1990 39% 22% 17% 6% 2000* 46% 27% 21% 7% Education Deficit** 1990 408,575 290,850 228,525 90,025 2000* 443,715 311,562 313,666 155,171 *Note: 2000 results are based upon 2000 supplementary survey – monthly samples during 2000, whereas 1990 results are full census findings (that have not been released as of 9/15/2001). **Note: The education deficit is the number of Ohio citizens aged 25 and older who must have higher educational attainment just to achieve the national average. Statewide Answers: During the 1999-2000 academic year, colleges and universities in Ohio awarded 86,485 degrees and 2,571 certificates. Note: To report degree completions for independent colleges and universities, data from the Integrated Postsecondary Data System (IPEDS) maintained by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) at the Department of Education were used. IPEDS data are collected annually from all higher education institutions eligible for federal funding through Title IV. These data have not been adjudicated by NCES and could potentially change. Because independent colleges do not report their degree or certificate completion data to the Board of Regents, information about disciplines in which degrees are awarded can only be presented for the state-supported campuses.
