```					Metric and Imperial Conversions
Using conversion Factors
Easy examples: Imperial units to metric units
1 inch =     2.5cm
1 gallon = 4.5 L
In each case multiply the conversion
1 oz = 25g                                                        factor by the number of the units you
have.
Easy example: metric to imperial units
1 Kg = 2.2Lb
Put in the missing figures and work out the answers.
1.) 5 inches =            5 x ........... =         .................cm
2.) 6oz =                 6 x ............. = ............... g
3.) 12inches =            12 x ............... = ................... cm
4.) 8 Kg =                8 x ............... = ................. Lb
5) 9 gallons =            9 x ............... = .................... L
Now try these!
1. How many grams is 8oz?
2. How many pounds in 3 Kg?
3. How many litres in 27gallons?
4. What is 40 inches in cm?
5. Give 5oz to the nearest 10 grams.
6. Sam wants to put a new zip in her dress. The zip measures 15” but the shop sells
them in cm. What length zip does she need to buy?
7. A man is buying a pair of trousers. He knows his leg measures 29”. The shop
gives the leg sizes in cm. Which pair should he buy?
A       72cm              B         73cm                 C          75cm
Metric and Imperial Conversions
Harder example:                       8Km is approximately 5 miles
Miles has 5 letters!
.
This means 1 Km = 0 625miles which is not an easy number to work with.
THINK             in fractions                        1 Km =     5
/8 of a mile
OR
8
1 mile =           /5 Km
Now this is the same as the easy examples.
3 Km = 3 x          5
/8 =                .
3 x 5 = 1 875
8
REMEMBER: ÷ BY THE BOTTOM AND X BY THE TOP
KILOMETRES TO MILES = ÷ 8 AND X 5
Tip:   You can do this the other way round if it makes the calculation easier.
TURN EACH OF THESE INTO THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF MILES.
1.      80 Km                         2.        120 Km                                 3.     65 Km
4.      70 Km                         5.        250 Km                                 6.     72 Km
7.      10.35 Km                      8.        66 Km                                  9.     147 Km
TURN MILES INTO KILOMETRES
REMEMBER: ÷ BY THE BOTTOM AND X BY THE TOP
MILES TO KILOMETRES = ÷ 5 AND X 8
10.     25 miles                      11.       16 miles                       12.     52 miles
13.     18 miles                      14.       205 miles
15. Mr Jackson’s car has a dial that gives the speed in miles per hour. mph. He
travels to France where the speed on roads is given in Km per hour. The limit on a
French motorway is 110 If he drives at 70mph will he be within the speed limit?
BUT if you want to change cm to inches ÷ by 2.5
12.5cm in inches
There are 5 lots of 2.5 in 12.5
1         2       3         4        5
0         2.5       5       7.5       10       12.5 cm
0         1         2        3        4         5    inches
