                                            Power Supply Swap



Aim            To grow wheat seeds in 5 undivided Petri dishes for 11 days, 2 using water treated with
               an Aqua-Chi® module connected to the IonCleanse® power supply on Mode 3, another 2
               using water treated with an IonCleanse® module connected to the Aqua-Chi® power
               supply and 1 using untreated city water as a control.



Materials      5 x undivided Petri dishes

               Wheat seeds

               Aqua-Chi® module and power supply

               IonCleanse® module and power supply

               Ammeter (Tenma 72-7277 DC Current Meter)

               Box of Cone Style Natural Brew Coffee Filter #4

               2 x 4L glass jars

               3 x 600mL Mason glass jars

               3 x glass eyedroppers

               Digital still camera



Method

20 wheat seeds were placed in each of the 5 Petri dishes. The dishes were labeled “Control”, “Aqua-Chi
1”, “Aqua-Chi 2”, “Ion Cleanse 1” and “Ion Cleanse 2”.



The Aqua-Chi® module attached to an IonCleanse® power supply was placed in a glass jar labeled “AC”
and filled with 2L of city water (see Diagram 1). The Aqua-Chi® with IonCleanse® power supply was set
up according to the IonCleanse® manual on mode 3 and sufficient salt was added to produce a 2.5amp
power flow. The Aqua-Chi® was then turned on and the water was treated for 35 minutes. Once the 35
minutes was over, approximately 500mL of the water was filtered through a Cone Style Natural Brew
Coffee Filter #4 into a Mason glass jar labeled “AChi w/ Ion Cleanse Power”.

The IonCleanse® module attached to an Aqua-Chi® power supply was placed in a glass jar labeled “IC”
and filled with 2L of city water (see Diagram 2). The IonCleanse® with Aqua-Chi® power supply was set
up according to the Aqua-Chi® manual and sufficient salt was added to produce a 2.5amp power flow.
The IonCleanse® was then turned on and the water was treated for 35 minutes. Once the 35 minutes
was over, approximately 500mL of the water was filtered through a coffee filter into a Mason glass jar
labeled “Ion Cleanse w/ AChi Power”.

Water from the jar labeled “AChi w/ Ion Cleanse Power” was added to the Petri dishes labeled “Aqua-
Chi 1” and “Aqua-Chi 2”, so that the seeds were sufficiently hydrated in each dish. This was repeated
using water from the jar labeled “Ion Cleanse w/ AChi Power” and added to the Petri dishes labeled “Ion

Cleanse 1” and “Ion Cleanse 2”. NOTE: The water was added to the Petri dishes immediately after
being treated and filtered.



Approximately 500mL of untreated city water was filtered through a Cone Style Natural Brew Coffee
Filter #4 into a Mason glass jar labeled “Control Water”. Water from this jar was then added to the Petri
dish labeled “Control” so that the seeds were sufficiently hydrated.



Photographs of the 5 Petri dishes were taken each day. Each of the 5 Petri dishes was topped up with
the appropriate water (using a separate glass eye dropper for each water type) from their respective jars
whenever required throughout the 11 days. The results including the photographs were recorded in a
report.

Observations

08-31-08

- “Aqua-Chi 1” had 19 out of 20 seeds sprout, however only 17 of those continued to grow. The 17
  seeds that continued to grow developed healthy root systems.
- “Aqua-Chi 2” had 19 out of 20 seeds sprout, all 19 continued to grow but 2 of those stopped growing
  after a short time. The 17 seeds that continued to grow developed healthy root systems.
- “Control” had 20 out of 20 seeds sprout, 17 continued to grow but 1 of those stopped growing after a
  short time. The 16 seeds that continued to grow developed healthy root systems.
- “Ion Cleanse 1” had 15 out of 20 seeds sprout, 6 continued to grow but all of those stopped growing
  after a short time. Only 1 seed that continued to grow developed small roots; the other 2 didn’t
  produce any roots.
- “Ion Cleanse 2” had 6 out of 20 seeds sprout, 2 continued to grow but they both stopped growing
  after a short time. The 2 seeds that continued to grow didn’t produce any roots.

- Mould had started to grow in the “Aqua-Chi” and “Control” dishes. The mould had grown on 2 seeds
  in each of the dishes (see Diagram 3).

- The “Aqua-Chi 1”, “Aqua-Chi 2” and “Control” sprouts were of similar height (see Diagram 4).

-   Mould has spread to 4 seeds in the “Aqua-Chi 1” dish (see Diagram 5).
-   Mould has spread to 5 seeds in the “Aqua-Chi 2” dish (see Diagram 5).
-   Mould has spread to 14 seeds in the “Control” dish (see Diagram 5).
-   Sprouts in “Control” dish are slightly higher (approx. 1 inch) than the Aqua-Chi® dishes.
-   1 stem in “Control” dish has turned brown at its base (see Diagram 6).
-   1 stem in “Control” dish has a brown patch towards the base on the original shoot just before where
    the new leaves emerged (see Diagram 6).
