Message From the President
From the catwalk to the community:
Trendsetters through the years
If I were to come up with one word to describe the Junior League of Louisville during the 1940s,
it probably would be “trendsetter”; the league launched into important work during this decade,
much of which is still evident today.
We founded the world’s first mobile cancer unit made by General Electric. JLL gave the unit
to the American Cancer Society to provide x-ray diagnostic services and equipment to areas
throughout Kentucky not located near clinics. This was also the era when JLL founded the
Louisville Children’s Theater (Stage One) and worked to create other opportunities for participation
and appreciation of the arts in Louisville. In addition, JLL sponsored two radio programs featuring children’s literature
on WINN and WAVE radio stations.
And then there was World War II
A new war committee was formed to take care of the increasingly enlarged war service program. Membership had
grown to 325 members, including 58 actives, 140 special actives, 100 sustainers and 23 provisionals, creating the
need to accommodate members with war jobs by holding meetings at night and creating community placement
opportunities in the evening.
In 1938, JLL started the Volunteers Bureau and in 1941, it became the Civilian Defense
Volunteers. This was a model for other CDVs all over the U.S., and received national recognition
in President Truman’s V-J Speech. The Volunteers Bureau is the Volunteer Engagement Center
operated today by Metro United Way.
JLL funded many of its community projects, including scholarships for Kent School of Social
Work students, with proceeds generated from the annual Follies and Stewards Dry Goods Style
Show. JLL members, such as Mrs. Hugh Collins, (pictured) served as the models for the show.
The Stewards Style Show still stands as JLL’s longest running fundraiser.
So what better way to celebrate our 90th Anniversary than with a fashion show! I am delighted
Dillard’s Department Store has agreed to make this a reality, not just with one, but two shows
– the first, as a pre-launch to our 90th year the Thursday evening prior to the Breeders’ Cup, and Mrs. Hugh Collins
models a chic outfit
the second, to be held in lieu of our April General Membership meeting the Saturday before the for JLL’s Style Show
Kentucky Derby. It is the perfect way to illustrate that Junior League of Louisville continues to be at the Brown Hotel
an “enduring classic” in our vision to create lasting community change.

In honor of JLL’s 90th birthday, each issue of CLiPS during the 2010-11 league year will
have questions to help you learn or remember about our past 90 years. We hope you
will realize what an impact JLL has had in the past, present and future of our regional
community. (answers on Page 5)

The 2010 Pink Tie Ball was an elegant “pink” tie evening
featuring a pink champagne and cocktail reception,
dinner, dancing, a silent and a live auction. The night
was also filled with great music, and gourmet sweets.
In addition to raising money for local breast cancer
projects, The Pink Tie Ball celebrates breast cancer
survivorship and recognizes an individual whose
contributions have made a difference in the breast
cancer fight through the Komen Promise of One

This year, we had a handful of ladies go down and
