Federer claims 14th Grand Slam win
Switzerland’s Roger Federer won his 14th Grand Slam victory at Roland Garros on Sunday by defeating Robin Soderling to claim his first French Open title. Federer dispatched the Swede in three sets in a match marred by the intrusion a man who jumped onto the clay court and draped a flag over the Basel native’s head. He was momentarily shaken by the incident but it did not prevent him from prevailing 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. Now, the arguments begin in By Swisster Staff earnest over whether Federer, 27, is the greatest men’s tennis player of all time. His historic Grand Slam win tied the record established by American Pete Sampras, who never won the French Open. And Federer is now only one of six men to have won all of the major single’s championships, including Wimbledon, US and Australian Opens.
