Session 1 Assignment – Bio Post / Meet 'n Greet Discussion Board As your initial assignment please introduce yourself and tell us a little about you. After you have posted your information, read through your classmate's bios and welcome some of them by responding to their postings. Things you may want to include in your bio may include the following: • • • • Personal background Business background / experience Educational background Your background in online programs (for instance, is this your first online course?)
Session 1 Activity - Observations of Billy’s Case Study (Optional) Read through Billy’s case study written by a CASA Volunteer. As you read the case, write down your perspective about the volunteer’s observations.
Session 1 Pre-Test Assessment Please take a few minutes to assess your knowledge and skills by completing the pre-test assessment.
Session 2 Activity – Iceberg Exercise (Optional) Using the iceberg picture, write down what you would “see” above the waterline and what you may not “see” below the waterline in terms of cultural aspects that are observable and those aspects that can only be suspected, imagined, or intuited.
Session 3 Activity – Personal Values Exercise (Optional) Respond to the two scenarios given in the session regarding the infant and the necklace. Use the four steps of cultural reciprocity to respond to the scenarios.
Session 4 Assignment – Key Terms Posting Discussion Board Choose 3 terms from the list and post your thoughts on how they are relevant in today’s society in terms of being able to define, identify, and work within the concepts of cultural competency. Were there any definitions that made you stop and really think about the concept?
Session 5 Assignment – Cultural Child Rearing Practices Discussion Board Search online for cultural child rearing practices. Post your findings online. Include the website of where you found your information along with the type of child rearing practice and a description of the practice. Would the child rearing practice be acceptable in mainstream society?
Session 5 Activity – Self-Assessment & Identity Exercise (Optional) Answer the questions in the self-assessment and identity exercise. The purpose of this activity is to give each learner an opportunity to confront and clarify the meaning of ethnicity in a personal way.
Session 6 Activity – Test Your Knowledge of Poverty (Optional) Test your skills by answering the questions regarding the culture of poverty.
Session 6 Assignment – Compare and Contrast 2 Subcultures Discussion Board Choose 2 subcultures from the list of provided readings. These may be subcultures that you currently have cases related to, may be your own culture, or may be cultures that you don’t know much about and are interested in learning more. In the discussion board, compare and contract 2 of these subcultures. Instead of focusing on the differences, list out the strengths and familiarities that you recognize. How are the familiarities and strengths areas that you could use in your practice in working with these subcultures? Session 8 Post-Test Assessment Please take a few minutes to complete your knowledge and skills by completing the post-test assessment.
