                                     Grand Knight’s Report
Right around the corner is one of my favorite events of the year the Memorial
Mass. The reason that this is one of my favorites is because this is a time when
we remember the brothers that have gone before us and the hard work and sacri-
fice that has made this council what it is today. Some of the men I never met
and some of the men I have met and fondly remember. The best part is remem-
bering the stories of these men and reliving the past achievements of the coun-
                                  cil.

Next month is the council’s Christmas party. See Page 7 for the details of the
party on December 11. This is always a fun event.

The Major Degree and Winter District meeting are in January so be ready for
those because it will be an all hands on deck as we prepare for those events. The
District Meeting is an event that we have not hosted in a very long time so this
is an honor for us to be able to host this function.

As we approach the Christmas season you saw an example of the Knights at work around Our Lady of Sorrows.
The Knights and some of the youth of the parish put the Christmas lights on the trees and bushes around the
church. This is an illustration of many hands making light work as there were a lot of lights to be put up on the
grounds. The Knights were there to give the kids direction in setting up the light displays. See Page 8 for a pic-
ture of the team. I would like to thank all of the knights that came out on that day to help put up the lights and to
Marc Wilkins for chairing the project.

This brings me to my last point; there has been an uptick in the interest of the council doing more youth related
activities. The Knights sponsor many youth activities such as a free throw and free kick contests and essay and
poster contests. There are also youth groups like the Columbian Squires and the Daughters of Knights if any of
these seem to interest you then let me know. Getting to know the youth of the parish is vital because these boys
will turn to men and these men we want to be able to call Knights. By being associated with the kids of the parish
the Dads may see that the Knights of Columbus is a group that they would like to join.

Remember “if you do what you always did, you get what you always got” in order to soar to new heights we need
to try new things so, Come Fly With Me!
                                             Fraternally Yours,

                                              Ed Waldecker, Jr.

                             Program Director’s Report
One of the traditions here at St.Francis has been to gather at one of the local funeral
homes to recite the rosary when one of our brother Knights or his spouse passes away. It
can be a great source of consolation and support for the family of that person at a difficult
time. On the inside of the back cover of this newsletter is a list of those members and their
phone numbers who have joined this group of knights in remembering our fallen brothers
or their spouse. If you are not on this rosary chain yet, please consider letting me or Joe
Hejka know, so that your name can added.

Also, on another page in this newsletter there is information pertaining to our seniors and
retirees luncheon which is held each month at Monaghan Council on Farmington Rd. If you
fit into one of these categories, please consider joining other members and their spouses at
noon on the 3rd Thursday of each month for lunch. You will be most welcome and it
is a good way to get acquainted .

                                   MEMORIAL MASS

                               Sunday, November 7, 2010
St. Francis Council will celebrate its annual Memorial Mass for deceased members of our
Council on Sunday, November 7, 2010. The Mass will be held in the Family Center
Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows at 11:00, and the celebrant will be our own beloved chap-
lain, Fr. Loren O’Dea. The Mass will be followed by a late breakfast at Monaghan Coun-
cil on the west side of Farmington Road, north of Seven Mile Road in Livonia.

All members of St. Francis Council and relatives of our deceased brothers are invited and
encouraged to attend. So that we may have an idea of the number of attendees, we are re-
questing that you call Bob Collins at (248) 626-6180 and advise the number of family
members who will be attending: (1) the Mass, and (2) the late breakfast.

From the Mind and Heart (+/-) of Deacon Clem

To my Brother Knights of Council 4401:

Recognizing that we all have busy schedules that we adhere to, I apologize to my Brother
Knights of St. Francis Council for not being at the last meeting to discuss an opportunity for
us to participate in the Annual Michigan State Knight’s of Columbus Bowling Tournament
which will be held in January 8th thru March 6th of 2011 at the Fountain View Lanes on
Groesbeck in Clinton Township.

I became a Knight in 1975 in San Antonio, Texas. In the 35 years since that happy event, I
have bowled in a State Tournament in the neighborhood of 25 years here in Michigan as part
of a group of Brothers from the St. Leo Council in Roseville. The Council has ceased to exist
and the members of the team that I bowled with have not gone in the last three years. That
has saddened me and it is my hope that I can stir enough interest with you to send a team or
teams to this year’s event.

I recognize that we are not all PBA bowlers, and since this is a handicap tournament, we
need to try and establish a team average so as to not all go in with a 175 average. So,,,,,,

The cost for the tournament is $17.00 per event (Team, singles, doubles) and if there is an
interest in putting together a team, please call me here at the Parish Office (248) 536-1239;
or, my cell phone which is: (248) 953-8088. My e-mail address is:
cstankiewicz6@comcast.net.

Thank you, as Fr. Solanus once said, ahead of time.

Deacon Clem

Religious Appreciation Dinner a Huge Success
Thank you to everyone who assisted and/or attended last month’s Religious Appreciation Dinner. We had
over 90 people in attendance including the State Vocations Director, Robert J Garstka and State Advocate
Kenneth Unterbrink with his wife Ellie. Everyone appeared to have a great time, including our Chaplains
Frs. O’Dea and Brauer. The final receipts are coming in, but when all is settled, I believe that we came in
under budget. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next Religious Appreciation Dinner in two years.

 Vivat Jesus!

a non-confrontational protest where we recite the Rosary (takes about 20

Sir Knights, Ladies, families and friends,

   Vivat Jesus !

I like it! I love it! I want some more of it, I want to spread it on my toast and eat it! The as-
sembly has been jammin’. Our first poker party at Bayside in Walled Lake netted us almost two thou-
sand big ones and we’re looking forward to our next date. November 5-8 at 6:30 to 2:00 a.m. come
join us and see what all of the excitement is about; call me to volunteer.
Flag retirement day was a wonderful ceremony. We had many attendees and over fifty old
flags. We did our patriotic duty then had some ice cream. The Lord blessed us with a beautiful day.
We had some special flags including one from the retired Navy pilots in Pensacola FL and one that
  was 10 by 15 feet.
The color corps has been putting in some overtime. We assisted at two different living rosa-
ries at St. Fabian. We also attended a memorial dedication mass for the unborn at St. Clare of Assisi.
And of course the annual Prep bowl at Ford Field; where the best Catholic school football teams bat-
tle it out on the gridiron for the right to be called champions.
We are still going strong through the end of the year. November 7th is the Memorial Mass for
St. Francis council. A mass for our troops is being held at St. Fabian church on Saturday November
11th at 7 pm; all are welcome. It is truly our honor and privilege to participate in these events.
Our annual Christmas party for the special needs catechism classes will be held at St.
Pricilla’s in Livonia on Dec. 8 at 6pm; this takes the place of our monthly business meeting for De-
cember. Please arrive at 5:30. This is always a very rewarding event for everyone involved. I look
  forward to seeing you there.

May God guide voters during the Nov. election,

                                   Russ Waldecker P.G.K.
