OCU~B has added an audio component to the tour, which concentrates on f eatures of the building itself as well as the original museum elements. Wed Jun 3, 2009 12:15pm - 1pm Noon Talk - "Picturing Indiana Limestone" Where: IU Art Museum Brian Keith, senior scientist with the Indiana Geological Survey, will discuss the history of the state’ early limestone industry as depicted s by the Hoosier Group artist Otto Stark in a series of f our large-scale watercolor paintings. 1pm - 3pm Elite Tours Tour of Sieboldt Quarr y Where: Bedford Participants should meet at Half Moon Limestone, 1417 R St., Bedf ord. Learn about limestone from a whole different aspect and see first -hand what is involved in the crushed stone business. 1pm - 2pm Hidden Lime Kilns Where: Spring Mill St ate Park Join us for a short hike to see two lime kilns that date back to the1880s. You'll discover the uses f or lime, learn history of these kilns, and also see the small quarry that kept the kilns running. Meet at the Nature Center Amphitheater (40 min). Pick up a map f or the gallery walk near the Wiley House behind the Lawrence County History Museum north of the square on J Street. Follow the map to a number of interesting exhibitions by local artisans and arts groups, purchase strawberry shortcake at Harp Commons, check out the vintage cars on display around the square, and finish your walk at the Old Jail Arts Center in the former Lawrence County Jail, a block south of the square at 17th and J Streets. For more information, write oldlawrencejail@gmail.com Sat Jun 6, 2009 8am - 4:30pm Lost River Tour Where: Orleans Guided tour of the Lost River Karst System, off ered by the Lost River Conservation Association. Tour is free, open to the public, and will be done in your own car. All tours are GO, "especially if it rains". Tour will involve moderate hiking at some stops, which are optional. We recommend sturdy f ootwear, long sleeves, long pants (even in hot weather), camera, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Reservations not necessary; Tour is at your own risk. Meet at 7:40 AM at the Gazebo in the Orleans Town Square. 10am - 12pm Elliot Underground Tour Where: Elliot Stone - Bedford Enter and see up close the only underground limestone quarry in the world. Participants should meet at the Lawrence County Museum, 929 th 15 St. Bedford. Wear comfortable shoes that can get a little dirty. Tour will take about 2 hours. Sun Jun 7, 2009 2pm - 4pm Limestone Legacy Where: Spring Mill State Park Limestone played an important role in th e development of Spring Mill Village. Explore this history and take a look at some of the historic sites (quarry, mill, and kiln) that help tell the story of limestone at Spring Mill. Meet at the Weaver's Cabin in the Pioneer Village (45 min). 7:30pm - 8:30pm Limestone Symposium Where: Waldron Arts Center - Bloomington Public invited to a presentation of the work of symposium participants and instructors, in slide and digital form. Located just north of Campbellsburg, this property features some beautiful geography, including multiple cave entrances and other karst features. On this afternoon ridgewalk, we'll discuss the history of the property while visiting several cave entrances. Please wear good hiking shoes; we will be going off-trail. Meet at the Cave River Valley parking lot* (2 hr). *Not sure how to get there? Meet the naturalist in front of the Grissom Memorial at 1pm f or directions (it's a 15 min drive).
