?A memory card reader is typically a USB interface for accessing the data on a
memory card like SD, micro SD, TransFlash etc. Most of the card readers allow write
capability allowing the combination of the card reader and the memory card to be
used like a pen drive or flash drive. Sometimes memory card readers come built in
with the CPU and some printers.

Usually a card reader is compatible with more than one type of memory card. These
don't possess any memory storage capacity but may accept a variety of memory cards.
Multi type card reader use a USB interface to sync with a USB capable computer to
allow exchange between the memory card and the computer. The number of types of
memory cards that may be compatible with a card reader may vary from one reader to
another. Some memory card readers accept more than even 20 different types of
memory cards. If a memory card reader is compatible with x number of types of
memory cards then it is called x-in-1. So if a memory card reader accepts 35 different
types of memory cards then it may be called 35-in-1. A memory card reader may be
categorized as: a single card reader, a multi card reader or a series card reader.

A single card reader accepts only one card at a time. But it may be compatible with
more than one type of memory cards. A multi card reader is capable of accessing the
information stored in more than one card at a time and it may accept more than one
type of memory cards. The series type of memory card may be used to access
information from more than one memory card at a time but all of them must be of the
same make.
