AAMU Schedules Major Forestry Conference
Huntsville, Ala. ---- Alabama A&M University and the Southern Research Station, USDA/Forest Service, are hosting a celebration and symposium on March 17 and 18. The event will be celebrate 30 years of forestry education at AAMU, 10 years of partnership with the Forest Service, and the recent receipt of professional accreditation by the Society of American Foresters (SAF). The activities begin 1 p.m. on the March 17. The lead speakers will be Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman (tentative commitment), Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth and International Paper Company Vice President George O’Brien. A presentation by SAF of the letters of accreditation will follow. A slate of specially invited speakers will then address issues concerning AfricanAmericans as professional foresters and as landowners practicing forestry. During the evening of March 17, a jazz ensemble will provide background music for an evening of Southern Hospitality at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The following morning will be devoted to a symposium on African-American issues in forestry.
FORESTRY CELEBRATION/Page Two Conference attendees will not only celebrate the program’s accreditation, but it will also offer them an opportunity to combine their expertise with those of African-American landowners, forestry educators, African-American foresters, and agency and industry personnel.
