					PVCS Config Builder

What’s PVCS Builder?


PVCS Builder is a comprehensive software build solution spanning multiple operating environments, programming languages, integrated development environments (IDE's) and configuration management systems.

What’s in PVCS Builder ?
PVCS Builder is the industry's first comprehensive, automated build solution for the entire enterprise.  Builder supports multiple operating environments, programming languages, integrated development environments, and configuration management systems.  Builder is seamlessly integrated with Serena software configuration and change management applications.


What are the key items of PVCS ?
Builder creates a reliable, repeatable process that ensures that the application is built correctly every time.  By preventing build-related regressions that cost time and divert resources, Serena Builder helps development and QA teams move more quickly to testing cycles, keeping projects on time and on budget.

Performance and Scalability
Tracker 8 now exploits the multi-threading capabilities of a web application server, delivering significant performance improvements to Tracker web clients, both in execution of operations and in supporting large numbers of concurrent users.  It is now possible to create and manage multiple issue types (for example, issues such as Enhance, Defect, Task, Requirement, etc.) from within a single project. conti….


Issue types may have some commonality with other issues, but may also contain unique information that can be displayed and manipulated in a unique way common to only that particular type.  Users can sort and filter by type among the multiple issues; for example, a user may want to see only documentation issues or only defects.  Filtering by issue type allows individuals performing a functional role to focus on just those issues of interest.


Security
Tracker 8 supports LDAP compliant authentication systems (such as Novell, Active Directory and iPlanet) to streamline user authentication management.  Support has also been added for single sign-on. Once logged on, switching to another PVCS application will not require the user to sign on again. Single sign-on is available for use independent of an LDAP server.


Support for Distributed Development
Parity between the web client and desktop client has been increased. Tracker Link in the web client now embeds issue management directly to Version Manager. In addition, the web client now enables users to:  Attach files when submitting new issues  Select columns in the In Tray and Queries pane to better organize your view  Manually notify rather than wait for the notify service to perform the notification at some later time.

Key Benefits:
Provide all the necessary attachments at the time of issue creation, reducing time and effort of submitting issues through the web.  Initiating notification of key stakeholders in a timely fashion of issues changes reduces the overhead and response time of resolving high visibility issues.  As organizations evolve and projects grow, it may be desirable to merge a variety of projects containing issues.


To support this need, Tracker 8.0 includes an easy-to-use import/export wizard, guiding and automating the process involved in copying issues across projects, helping to further simplify the management of projects as organization needs change.  Tracker has had the capability to automatically notify an issue’s stakeholders to important changes made to an issue.


Productivity Enhancers


With Tracker 8.0, the notification process has been enhanced significantly, allowing more complex notification rules to be constructed, giving a finer level of control as to what types of changes or events result in notification of the interested parties —this reduces the amount of overhead they would have in processing and filtering out notifications that are of no material interest to them.



Complementing the more complex notification rules, Tracker 8 is able to escalate issues providing the tools necessary to support such business drivers as service level agreements (SLA).
The support for escalation rules include time-based conditions (such as changes in the last n days or since a specified date) as well as negative conditions (a change did not occur).



P-E
Using escalation rules one can easily flag issues that require special or immediate attention, and prevent them from 'falling through the cracks,' which can ultimately impact the business in significant and material ways.  Notification processing is now more fully automated, with the process started when the server boots without the need to login to initiate the start.




By running the notification process as a Windows service in this manner, the notification service can run in an unattended manner, ensuring that any changes made to issues will automatically result in notification to the interested parties.

Summary of PVCS Tracker
Tracker goes beyond simple defect tracking — it keeps you on top of all team development issues to ensure:
 

No more missed handoffs Automatic tracking of responsibilities and status Full documentation of changes



Faster development, with higher quality results  Tracker is easily accessible when and where users prefer it, including Windows desktop client, from within IDEs, UNIX/Linux and web environments. It is easy to administer and scales to large, distributed project teams.
