        Introduction
                                 As the global economy shows few signs of recovery from the downturn, the DRM
                                 market is expected to show a healthy growth despite certain challenges in the
                                 post-consolidation phase. This report aims to provide clarity to vendors and
                                 investors in DRM solutions by bringing together a comprehensive view of the
                                 market dynamics and analyzing the growth opportunities.

                                 In these post-consolidation years, the technology landscape in the DRM space is changing
                                 rapidly, creating a host of strategic challenges and new opportunities for vendors. The recent
                                 changes to the global economic outlook are forcing enterprises to rethink their technology
                                 investments. Datamonitor believes that traditional go-to-market strategies may not be sufficient
                                 for vendors to expand their reach and sustain growth in this uncertain market. This report aims
                                 to provide clarity to vendors and investors operating in the DRM and the broader ECM market
                                 by analyzing market opportunities, technology evolution, customer preferences, and competitor
                                 dynamics in the market.

        Key findings and highlights
                                  • The DRM market has gone through significant consolidation activity over the last three
                                     years and is now witnessing the entry of a new genre of vendors. The market is expected to
                                     attract user investments at a healthy rate, but certain challenges around product
                                     rationalization need to be addressed.
                                  • Technology evolution in the DRM market has been driven by user preferences for
                                     rationalized portfolios, broader content management functionality and newer paradigms
                                     such as social computing. The convergence between traditional DRM and ECM is
                                     increasingly evident, with collaboration and workflow management now perceived as
                                     standard DRM features.
                                  • Datamonitor's analysis of the changing dynamics in the competitive landscape and market
                                     preferences calls for a re-evaluation of go-to-market strategies. Datamonitor believes
                                     vendors should assess the diversity of end-user needs and increased competition and
                                     target specific channels to reach customers.

                 At the other end of the spectrum, the media industry has the lowest DRM penetration at 48%. Given that media
                 organizations are in the business of creating and distributing content, the low levels of incidence are rather paradoxical.
                 Datamonitor believes that a majority of media organizations have developed in-house content management systems and
                 are predominantly managing content over the web and local networks.

  Healthcare, Banking, Public Sector & Insurance are set to command most DRM investments
                 The sectors with the highest incidence of DRM solutions, healthcare, banking, the public sector and insurance, are also the
                 most likely to command a majority of future investments across all of the three major DRM segments. Datamonitor’s
                 analysis of the latest survey responses indicates that a very high proportion of institutions and organizations across these
                 sectors is planning short- to medium-term investments in DRM solutions. In the healthcare sector, 63% of institutions are
                 planning to invest in DM and RM solutions over the next two years, and nearly one in two institutions are looking towards
                 investing in DAM solutions. Insurance is the next growth hotspot, with 61%, 53% and 50% of respondents planning
                 investments in DM, RM and DAM solutions respectively.

OVERVIEW

Catalyst
               In these post-consolidation years, the technology landscape in the documents and records management is changing
               rapidly, creating a host of strategic challenges and new opportunities for vendors. The recent changes to the global
               economic outlook are forcing enterprises to rethink their technology investments, creating further challenges for DRM
               vendors. Datamonitor believes that traditional go-to-market strategies may not be sufficient for vendors to expand their
               reach and sustain growth in this uncertain market. This report aims to provide clarity to vendors and investors operating in
               the DRM and the broader ECM market by analyzing market opportunities, technology evolution, customer preferences, and
               competitor dynamics in the market.

Summary
               This report provides a comprehensive evaluation of the on-demand CRM market, assessing the market opportunities,
               technology evolution, enterprise requirements, competitive landscape and go-to-market strategies. Datamonitor draws the
               following conclusions:

               •      the adoption of DRM is expected to increase significantly across all enterprise size bands;

               •      convergence between the DRM domain and the broader ECM eco-system will accelerate;

               •      DRM vendors will need to strengthen product integration capabilities to compete effectively;

               •      product rationalization in the post-consolidation era will affect user investment decisions;

               •      vendors will need to address data security issues before promoting on-demand solutions;

               •      service quality emerges as a key differentiating feature as technology differences vanish;

               • enterprise sourcing preferences shift strongly towards direct procurement from vendors.

               The drive for collaborative health initiatives has been on the rise in the healthcare sector, and the focus so far has been on
               patient information systems and electronic health records. However, as healthcare organizations begin to look at ways to
               rationalize their applications stack, DRM solutions are increasingly being viewed as alternatives to proprietary electronic
               health records or collaborative health systems as they offer all the underlying capabilities required for such projects.

               shared workspaces.

               Although most DRM systems offer some form of search and discovery capability, it is only recently that the search
               capabilities within DRM systems have begun matching the effectiveness of proprietary Enterprise Search Systems (ESS).
               Advanced search features such as language localization, multimedia search, and even semantic search are now beginning
               to appear in DRM systems, due to a renewed focus by vendors in developing or integrating software stacks for extensive
               search within core DRM.

IT services vendors may shift the market dynamics, but independent vendors will survive
               Although the market has seen heavy consolidation in the last three years, Datamonitor’s assessment is that it is ripe for a
               final wave of consolidation as large IT services players look at acquiring the few remaining independent DRM vendors.
               HP’s entry into the market with the acquisition of Tower Software may be an initial marker, but a concerted move by major
               DRM vendors to adopt SOA practices portends a services-dominated DRM marketplace in the next three to four years.
               Alone among the big four enterprise stack vendors (IBM, Microsoft, SAP and Oracle), SAP is yet to offer a DRM or ECM
               solution to its customers and is expected to make a foray into the larger ECM market via the acquisition route.

               Open Text, with its strong affiliations to both SAP and Oracle, and a majority of independent players that offer tight
               integration with Microsoft’s Share Point offering will need to adapt to the new market dynamics of simultaneously
               competing and partnering with the stack vendors.

       End users are set to reap near-term pricing benefits from large vendors with broad ECM portfolios

               A majority of end users with finalized IT budget allocations will likely find the current DRM market attractive, as the
               prevalence of stack vendors and the entry of services players will likely exert strong downward pressure on solution pricing.
               Large vendors also provide the option of planning for and designing end-to-end solutions, coupled with the provision for
               ready integration with enterprise applications such as ERP, CRM and SCM systems.

               In the short to medium term, large vendors are expected to be aggressive with pricing as they battle to grab larger slices of
               the market. These vendors are also likely to offer DRM or ECM solutions as part of their broader solution portfolio –
